Letters to the Editor

Letters posted here are associated with the following article:
In a rational world, Giuliani's call for Israel to join NATO would provoke major controversy rather than deafening silence.

  • Can someone please explain WHY anyone is taking this seriously?

I mean does anyone think Giuliani is remotely serious about pushing this idea into an actual policy position, given there is only the most remote chance that anyone outside the neo-con cesspool would even be receptive to it?

Its quickly becoming clear Giuliani has neither the standing nor ability to push this or any other proposal into action even he was elected to the White House. Yes, he may have the ear of the neo-cons at the moment (but that's only for the moment). Yes, he may be able to bully elements of Congress to sign off on some of whatever agenda he posits (that's provided the same leadership remains in place).

But let's also keep in mind NATO is an international alliance, and thus whether a given country is given membership is NOT dictated solely by the United States. NATO doesn't want Israel added to its roles. The Israelis don't want to join it.

This whole idea is a sad joke, as is the man supposedly pushing it. Can we please treat it as such?

  • If fringe groups like AIPAC can lobby

for war-they should have a draft instituted among Jews.

I'm sick of seeing Irish, Italian, Hispanic, and african-americans have to take up the plight of the Jews of this country while Jews sit on thier lazy, comfy asses here. If they want a war-I say, move to the Middle East and take it up then-but leave the rest of Americans out of it.

  • @ bethincary

This is coming to you from a genuine non-Zionist:

Go fuck yourself, you ignorant hate-monger.

    Love,

    Rudy Guiliani's Prostate

  • I would love to treat it as the joke that it is...

but the beltway punditocracy will welcome such a proposal and push for it. We'll get to hear about "old Europe" again, Etc., Etc. I know you have been paying attention, so you know all this. The world was against the Iraq war too, right? I understand your point about the vote into NATO, I just don't trust that it is a no-go when crazy people run the most powerful country in the world with full support form even crazier media barons.

  • Iraq disaster has had one positive aspect

and only one: it almost forced some of the U.S. "realist" elites to begin calling the Israel Lobby on encouraging the U.S. to jump into conflicts that benefit only Israel. All our politicians are complicit. AIPAC seemed a cheap date until the dying got too extreme and the frittering away of U.S. power began to show. Genuine friends of Israel need to fear an ugly backlash -- and unhappily, Israeli and US rightwingers have set Israel up for that backlash.

  • Someone Mentioned Darth Cheney earlier

Cheney's only interest is making money. I truly believe that he has no ideological aspirations that don't involve copious amounts of money flowing into the hands of republicans. Wars with Middle Eastern countries accomplish this. anti-evolution amednments accomplish this (money into the priests into the republican party). Cheney is the perfect example of following the money. Which, might I add, is PRECISELY what makes him so cold and heartless. He just doesn't care about anything but money, and making more of it, and screwing anyone he can to do it.

Sign up for the draft. Stop expecting Americans to fight your proxy wars.

Your comments of "anti-semite" are typical responses by Jewish neocons to anyone bringing up the fact that Americans are sick of having to take up Israels' wars. Did you not look at the overwhelming numbers in Glens' article?

I see this time and time again on blogs as the Jewish neocon trolls swarm out in force- to try to smear.

Sorry, you dan't scare me-not intimidate me.

A 1 percenter does not have the right to decide what is best for the other 99% of Americans.

  • Having worked for...

Isralies, I can think of no ally that more deserves our continued support, or increasing support, than Israel except for Britain.

I'm not a jew but Isralies have helped make America the amazing place that it is.

  • Article 10

    NATO's Article 10 states:

The Parties may, by unanimous agreement, invite any other European State in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area to accede to this Treaty. Any State so invited may become a Party to the Treaty by depositing its instrument of accession with the Government of the United States of America. The Government of the United States of America will inform each of the Parties of the deposit of each such instrument of accession.

Wouldn't this mean that Giuliani's proposal is completely impossible?

I'm not saying that the lunacy of it shouldn't be exposed, of course.

  • bethincary

Sorry but lumping an entire group together and holding then all responsible for the actions of a small subset of them is a pretty good working defintion of bigotry.

I might add that engaging in the practice precisely plays into neocon's hands.

You're not beiog accused of anti-semetism for having made a comment against neocons or AIPAC. Your're being accused of anti-semetism because you made a blatantly anti-semetic comment.

  • @ Tiberius

    Dear Tiberius,

Thanks for making a statement that succeeds in being both incredibly stupid and incredibly racist at the same time.

    You've exceeded yourself!

    Sincerely,

    Svensker

  • Israel's Behavior Will Change

Would Israel have any incentive to seek compromise and peace if we were standing there ready to whup whomever opposed them? Would they have any incentive to stop building settlements, for instance? This sort of policy is bad for Israel, as there is no military solution to the Palestinian problem. The policy would render political solutions temporarily unneccesary and pointlessly escalate military 'solutions', which by their nature cannot work.

  • @ bethincary

SomeNYGuy isn't a neocon, or a troll, but he does recognize ignorance and prejudice when he sees it, as do I. Your comment was genuinely offensive, and not just to Jews.

  • svensker...

nothing I said was racist you moron. Thanks for contributing nothing.

  • has anyone noticed?

that to a man, everyone who has defended the proposal here has either misunderstood it or misrepresented it. It has nothing to do with the USA entering an alliance with Israel or having a mutual defense arrangement. It has to do with shoehorning Israel into an existing Alliance of 26 nations of which the US is just one member. The USA is free to negotiate anything it wants to with Isreal except its relationship to those other nations.
