Are Democrats planning still worse FISA capitulations?

The NYT reports that Democrats are planning to provide retroactive immunity to telecoms which broke the law by allowing warrantless eavesdropping.

The letters thread is now closed.

Just look at the history of the US

Now don't get me wrong, I hate what Bush has been doing as president, and I hate that we have a government completely lacking in any level of accountability, but this isn't new.

Lincoln and FDR weren't so great on the sticking to the constitution (if you want racial profiling, just ask the Japanese-Americans alive in WW II what it was like), Hoover used the FBI to gun down certain criminals rather than capture them (Dillenger wasn't given the chance to surrender) which tops holding "enemy combatants" without trial, McCarthy twisted his position in order to pursue one giant witch hunt, the pinkertons had carte blanche permission to use whatever force was necessary to disband union strikes, ask Kent State if the Chinese have a monopoly on military lethal force used against students, and so on and so on.

I am not excusing Bush by any means, but what he is doing isn't anything new. Our goverment has not been crystal clean for a long long time. I don't think the ideals of our country ever truly matched the reality of it, but for what it's worth, I think our society (or at least the members of it capable of individual thought) is now more aware of this fact. Whether that is a good thing or not is debatable, since if history is an indication, nothing really changes.

An example of 'true' attacks to come!

Dammit, I hate being proven right!

If you were one of the Americans waiting for Congress, under Democratic control, to show leadership on the war in Iraq, the message from the Senate is clear: "Nevermind." The same goes for those waiting for lawmakers to fix the damage done to civil liberties by six years of President Bush and a rubber-stamp Republican Congress.

This in an editorial posted Friday titled: "In Search Of A Congress": http://tinyurl.com/28k7oy

The key is that IF Democrats controlled 60 votes in the senate, then Democrats could be blamed of 'controlling' congress. There is NOT DEMOCRATIC CONTROL of congress!!! THERE ISN'T, THERE ISN'T THERE ISN'T!!!

Dammit people but this H-U-G-E detail is going to be used as a knife that is going straight into the back of the Democratic party in the elections!!!

Can't anyone realize this is dangerous!?!?! People that represent Democrats and their ideals HAVE TO MAKE the REPUBLICAN CONTROL OF THE SENATE AN ISSUE or the (s)elections next year are going to be framed by statements like: 'Democrat party in control of Congress that won't represent the people' which is true on one count but is a blatant lie on the other!

Failing to address this issue is damaging, perhaps more so, because it feeds the RNC framing of the 'do nothing democrats' who can't stand for anything...

Dammit I see the wall coming and it's going to hurt...

Capitulation

Any Americans who thought electing Democrats to the Congress would somehow Change Directions in America must be very disappointed at this point. Clearly, there will be NO Undoing of the Patriot Act, the Dept.of Homeland Security, the warrantless wiretapping, or even the war. I am personally convinced that as long as many American Families have a Lexus and an SUV in the driveway, and are able to put gas in them, and go on a great vacation every year, that they are perfectly willing to sit back and let the Powers-That-Be take all of our liberties, send our young people off to die, and spend us into bankruptcy. God Help Us All. I don't see a single Person running for president who will challenge the status quo, and their salesmen, Big Corporate Media, who continue to Parse, Spin and Selectively Report , or NOT what is Truly happening to this country. If We Don't wake up soon, we will be in a horrible fix.
