Forcing Larry Craig's resignation while embracing David Vitter

Cost-free moralism is the only type the right-wing "traditional marriage" movement believes in.

The letters thread is now closed.

Tony Perkins

Someone should ask Chris Mathews if he considers Perkins having purchased the mailing list of white supremacist David Duke as part of that family values.

My apologies if someone already mentioned this.

A suspicion based on evidence not admissable anywhere except maybe here

SomeNYGuy, I suspect that Ron Pauliac is L.W.M., and is having us on a bit. If not, my apologies to L.W.M., but I still think we're dealing with a clone of the Major rather than a true believer.

@ Kitt

A mind at play is also a mind at work. Making that manifest is bebop-o's great contribution to our dialogues. When you see the sadness visited on all and sundry by folks who don't get that very simple, but very profound truth -- such as the Republican snake-handlers and their panderers under discussion here today -- it makes you yearn for the company of rocks, or better, of five-year olds.

I'm long past my parenting days, but what I remember about them is not so much what I taught, as what I learned. Whenever I meet an adult who's managed to keep that part of himself alive, I always feel better, sometimes for weeks. Bebop-o has managed it better than most, and is eloquent even when his muse is busy elsewhere. He's a treasure, and an excellent reminder of what is possible for all of us. As one of my favorite poets, Charles Bukowski, once said, God -- or somebody -- bless him.

@doofus

"What is stopping Democratic Senators and representatives, ... from... calling on Vitter to resign?"

Resign for what reason?

Thursday, August 30, 2007 12:43 PM

@ Ron Pauliac

Let's keep it real, people!

Vote 4 Ron Paul!!

-- Ron Pauliac

In what universe can those two sentences go together? You have created my new favorite oxymoron. Better than "jumbo shrimp," "military intelligence," "compassionate conservative," or even "The Mind of Mencia." And replacing my previous favorite, "anti-abortion Christianist libertarian."

Is anyone surprised that a "Ron Pauliac" would be well-versed in these lunatic conspiracy theories and theorists? There are real, scary people lurking under your bed, pal -- and they're members of the John Birch Society.

Specifics

What is lacking here is specifics. Right-wing moralists need to expound upon their belief that every word written in the bible is true and bring it into modern perspective.

Rule #1 For example, in the care of David Vitter, it is ok to hire prostitutes while professing your devotion to your wife and family and declaring your high moral values so long as you publicly repent when you are caught and there is a Democratic governor.

Rule #2 Hiring prostitutes while professing your devotion to your wife and family and declaring your high moral values so long as you publicly repent when you are caught and there is a Republican governor requires a degree of moral outrage depending upon the polls, Hugh Hewitt, Chris Mathews and Fox News commentary.

Rule #3 Homosexual acts are permitted even with minors. In the rare instance when you are exposed, we will be morally outraged and deny any knowledge of your acts. We will encourage you to deny any wrong doing even if there the solid evidence to the contrary just to see if the media might somehow become confused. If there is a Republican governor we will humiliate you and demand your resignation. If the governor is a Democratic or an election is due, try for rehabilitation.

Rule #4 Clergy who accidentally sodomize the wives while they are sleeping every night are not exempt from preaching high moral values are may be high level advisers to the president on matters of sex education and reproductive rights.

By listing contingencies such as these, conservatives will make much more sense to the rest of us.

Yes, I know that the Roy Cohn of Angels In America is fiction. That's why I mentioned that the monologue is from the play. Keep it real? That bizarre CIA story is a hoot: Hillary Clinton an Illuminati witch--that's priceless. Maybe not as priceless as imagining Gerald Ford in the White House screening room watching child porn.

What about Dem calls for Vitter's resignation?

Here's what's missing from this debate: Sure, Republicans have an incentive to leave Vitter alone, and they are acting hypocritically in doing so. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS??? What is stopping Democratic Senators and Representatives, as well as party officials such as Howard Dean, from spotlighting Vitter's misconduct (as well as the Republicans' double-standard with respect to Vitter and Craig) -- and calling on Vitter to resign? I do not understand why the Dems let the ruthless Rethugs off so lightly. I believe it was James Carville who famously said, "When your opponent's drowning, throw him an anvil." This kind of milquetoast behavior is a prescription for failure.

BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO

That's all, Glenn. Just wanted to say that you nailed it, perfectly, and eloquently.

Mr. Celery's Contributions

This is what I get about bebop-o's, aka, Good Celery's posts?

There is no way you can scan them without missing something. Every sentence, every word, stands on its own. You can't turn away from them or pretend like you think you have figured out where they are going. They don't play themselves out at any point. There is no, "I get it" moment. You just have to continue to read as they goes along and then take what you can from them. Hopefully, if you're lucky, you will feel enlightened for having done so.

Glenn,

Of course it's behavior that Craig chose. I admit that in my post. But, in today's blog I hear you commenting more on the GOP's handling of the Craig scandal and less on Craig's actions per se. And I argue that the family values trumpeters are acting out of a sort of denial that is the same as what any closeted, in denial gay acts from. And that is the pervasive, underlying "mental illness" of the entire far right wing.

I wasn't diminishing Craig's responsibility, only asking for apples to be compared to apples and for more light to be shone on the cognitive dissonance that infects the family values wing.

Thanks

Hey! Casual Observer

You are exactly right my friend! I was getting ready to make the same "pun" then I saw you had done it. Of course Glenn DID mention "media organs" again yesterday.

We have to find something to laugh about. I can get so depressed about this Iran thing. I have a 22 year old son and all it's gonna take is Hillary or Obama or Huckabee or McCain or some other moron to say that we're gonna have to restore the draft, and I'm gonna f***ing flip. I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February, 1968. My draft notice came the following day. My service turned out to be a very good thing for me, but my son (and our entire family strongly supports his position) WILL not help build an empire for these neocon bastards. We managed to keep him away from guns for the most part, but I'm beginning to think about buying him an AK-47 and make sure that he knows how to use it, in case he ever finds himself on the run.

Then, on the other hand, I'd just as soon ship him off to Europe, even if it means we never see him again.

Of course, then I realize I just need to laugh about SOMETHING! Even if it is a sad old queen who's too ashamed of who he is to admit it, even when he's caught in the act.

As for changing his plea? Sorry, too much smoke here... Then again, maybe he "speckled" his trousers or something. Where is "Goofy" Ann Goldberg when we need here. Better go back and scan his mug shots. See if there's any "evidence".....LOL
