The Democrats' responsibility in the wake of Gonzales' resignation

Senate Democrats must commit themselves to blocking any and all nominees until Bush nominates someone whose independence and integrity are beyond reproach.

The letters thread is now closed.

Democrat Waffling

Heard John Roberts interviewing Schumer on Chertoff. Schumer did not impress. He could have refused to discuss Chertoff but unable to control his need to talk he waffled. Not a good sign.

A handicapper's nightmare

The Democrats may not have much control over who winds up as Attorney General for Bush's last year in office, but they can certainly use the confirmation process to establish once and for all that the Department of Justice has become little more than the enforcement arm of the Republican Politburo. We have every right to expect that much of them, although judging by their recent actions, it's not hard to imagine them avoiding a confrontation yet again.

However this plays out...

... you can be pretty sure that the good of our country will be the last thing considered when the players choose their strategies.

We have given you a Dept. of Justice, sir...

if you can keep it.

Those pesky founding fathers were really something else.

Yes, who? By sheer co-incidence Glenn, I was just reading Your Bio. litigation check, Constitutional issues, check.

...There might be some question on your idealogical compatibility with Bush (that's a joke, son). I could go with Patrick Fitzgerald in the alternative.

well now, what have we here: Gonzo resigns.

Capitulate? ...I have just begun to not capitulate (fight!).

Nutz,

bahhummingbug!

The New AG?

I could certainly get behind James Comey for AG.

I doubt very much if we're going to get anyone better.

Roll over

But Glen, the nasty Republicans might call the Democrats NAMES if they don't appoint a Bush retainer. And as we all know VERY WELL, Democrats will do absolutely ANYTHING not to be called names.

My prediction: Bush will appoint Chertoff and the Dems will ROLL OVER and confirm him. To not do Bush's bidding would be TREASON!!!! Oh, my heavens!!!! I do believe those Dems have the vapors. How very sensitive they are. Cowards, all of 'em.

No matter what

Be it Bush making an agreement-violating recess appointment (defending it by claiming the "supreme importance of the AG on the critical War on Terra(tm)", etc, or putting forth a totally inappropriate set of candidates, the Dems will go along after pretending to make resistance noises. It is what they do.

C'mon Glenn! You yourself trotted out the LONG and unending list of failures by the Democraps. They are continually "betrayed" and continually "surprised" by how people they decided to "trust" actually turn out. It is crystal clear that the Democraps are literally and constitutionally incapable of learning from past results. They CANNOT learn from their mistakes and, thus, I must put forth that they are NOT mistakes, but rather, the intended outcomes. That or they truly are too incompetent to run a lemonade stand, let alone a government.

I have NO faith in the Dems standing up on this. They will do the fall down to get along schtick that they always do.

Makes sense

No need for Gonzo anymore ... the firewall protection he was providing for the White House rats - Rove and his underlings - has run its course, blocking any investigation until all have escaped or resigned. The Bush team will now shift gears from an ignorant toadie to what they need know - a sharp partisan mind to be able to spar intellectually with Congress to keep all the illegal wiretapping going.

Glenn on Victim Posters

For one thing, this sentiment is almost always inauthentic. If the people who claim to believe this really believed it, they wouldn't be spending their time reading and commenting on poltical blogs - what would be the point, since it's all so very, very hopeless?

I share your head-shaking disgust with the 'victim-hood' posters. But there are reasons that some people attend political blogs besides wanting to take place in, and effect, the political process. Entertainment being one, and the opportunity to make self-congratulatory comments is another. It takes thought and digging deep to really care about, and to really try to effect the political process. A lot of people are either not willing or not able to make that effort. But that doesn't stop them from playing in the arena. They remind me of the boisterously abusive "fans" I hear shouting down the players when I attend a Major league baseball games.

It Does Matter

Glenn:

You said:

So you're saying we should just ignore the whole AG issue, allow Bush to replace Gonzales with whomever he wants, since it doesn't matter? What specifically are you doing to advance the Real Revolution?

That's just it - it matters as an essential core feature. But there is no longer a functioning democracy - the s/elected officials no longer do the will of the people. The "real revolution" as you called it is predicated on identifying those domestic enemies as contained in the oath of office. You do that by outlining the discrepancies between spoken words and actions, between historical fiction and fact, between propaganda and verifiable evidence-based reason.

Each of us can do that with our voice and with our vote, to the extent that we are able. We can do it with civil disobedience. We can do it within the means of the Constitution.

However, it is critical that we know that the enemies don't play by the rules of the Constitution. They pervert the rules for their own ends. They use it to oppress the very rights of the people - that would be us, Glenn. And they have amassed incredible power and control, which you very ably and forcefully describe - in the manipulation of the media message, in the delivery of propaganda disguised as news and patriotism, in the oppressive tax inequalities, in the politicization of governmental agencies and functions, in the ability of corporations to control legislation and public policy, in the withholding of healthcare, education, worker protections, living wages and all of the other features of a dominant and viable middle class meritocracy majority.

We, the people, have played by the rules, and so for that, we are blindfolded, muffled, made deaf, and have had our hands and feet bound, whilst the enemies have amassed more and more and more weapons to be used against us.

It's a highly uneven battleground. There are two sets of rules - one could make the case that the domestic enemies are terrorists of we, the people. I don't have much in the way of weaponry except a small voice on the internet. The ammunition is the Constitution.

Is it enough?

Increasingly, I don't believe that it is.
