"There isn't a big market for people who believe in such protests." That statement can *only* be written by someone who thinks about the market....
Seems you're new here. I think you should research your characters a bit before you begin to impute pecuniary motive. Have you ever heard of the "marketplace of ideas"?
Now calm down. Take a deep breath. And see if you can contribute. If you don't think you can do so here, then there's plenty of other stuff that should adequately occupy your time. Telling Glenn he's only in it for the money doesn't seem to be one of them.
Cheers,
... makes some very good points in that last post. Seriously. Glenn, I think you're one of the very best contemporary writers on American politics, and I know you've got a lot of fans on this site who'll defend you against all critics, but I really think you need to take some serious criticism here. Please read Ché's points E, F and G very carefully. Seriously.
Hey this guy has lied so many times, how do we know that he is not doing it again and faking the resignation.
While were all taking swings at each other after school in the parking lot. Three things:
1. I'm not mad at Ralph Nader anymore. I realize everyone has an ego and his was probably bigger than most because of the incredible work he did earlier in his life. For that reason alone, I no longer blame him for the part he played in losing the 2000 election and the subsequent non-violent overthrow of the U.S. government by the neocons (and the associated war of aggression, rollback of civil liberties, loss of habeas corpus, torture of prisoners, monopoly corporatization of society, leading role in global mass extinctions, global race to the bottom in terms of human rights, etc.) that resulted. Third party my ass.
2. The Internet is the greatest single contribution to global democracy in over two-hundred years. Democracy results when informed and thoughtful people participate in government. That's what a democracy basically is: informed and thoughtful people putting their heads together and trying to figure out how to do what's best for everyone. Democracy is not capitalism. As a matter of fact, you can have monopoly capitalism without democracy (i.e, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the list is long). Democracy doesn't mean you get to live like a fat cat. Real democracy might actually mean that you learn to get by on less. Real democracy might actually have more to do with quality of life than massive quantities of cold hard cash. Glenn is changing things in the ways that suit him best. The commenters here are changing things with their comments. Everyone changes things when they participate in democracy. Join a club, write a letter, make a phone call, donate money, start a blog, demonstrate. (But don't ever, ever, ever promote violence or hate. That's the opposite of what democracies are for.)
3. I forgot what I was going to say.
(Note in passing: I wonder why Gonzo's departure has triggered such... erm, emotion. Oh well...)
"A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth. He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers; Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord. Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.--Proverbs 6
You can write ten pages and I'm still not convinced. Which I'm sure worries you to death, right?
Your posts are far more nasty, profane, mocking and arrogant than anything I've ever seen from Glenn or most of the people posting here. You kinda shoot yourself in the foot, there, whether you have a point or not. Seems almost like you call Glenn a mocker so as to give yourself license to vent your own brand of spleen.
One of the reasons we all keep coming here is because Glenn is even-handed, relies on hard evidence before calling people on their shit, and invites the kind of sane, informed discussion that is often lacking at other blogs. At the moment, IMO, you are not contributing to that ambiance, but detracting from it. And all that over a point that is barely worth making even if it were true.
He wouldn't say specifically about how he would feel about Chertoff as AG, but he did say something like, Isn't that the guy responsible for Katrina recovery? A nice little jab.

Early Warning
by William M. ArkinThey're Marching, But for What?
Four thousand marched against the Iraq war in Kennebunkport Saturday, an event that I surely would have missed except for being in Maine, where the Portland Press-Herald had multiple days of respectful page one coverage.
The Kennebunkport march isn't the kind of event that makes national news -- and indeed it didn't -- but it got me thinking: How many other similar protests and marches are going on out there? With public opinion so overwhelmingly against the Iraq war, even with crystal clear results in last November's elections, surely these protesters must see by now that the war isn't going to end before the 2008 elections. Talk of impeachment is folly and even unjustified. And yet, it got me thinking: Here is a case where the "will" of the people will indeed eventually end the Iraq war, and yet it is for a very wrong reason.
[...] America, meanwhile, is on vacation, leaving Iraq to the twin bumblers of war and anti-war, each absolutely convinced of their mission, heart wrenchingly pursuing what they think is the best course while communicating the worst possible messages to get there.

If, despite Mr. Arkin's serious admonitions, you want to be silly anyway, tomorrow's a good day for it.
"National Take A Stand Day" will consist of protests on the National Mall in DC and in hundreds of other locations on Tuesday, August 28.
Go to http://noiraqescalation.org
for info about the events on August 28.
