    You a non sequitur.

  • "The fact remains that some Muslims killed a Western filmmaker"

Holy Cow, you're righ!! Sure am glad no Christians have never killed anyone. (no Matthew Shepard, no clinic-bombings, no Oklahoma-city bombing...)

  • @Denning

Yes, a children's crusade. The sad thing is that these folks - after a lifetime's steady diet of John Wayne and Band of Brothers - just cannot relinquish their adolescent fantasies of leading a great crusade against the latest most implacable evil. Indeed, nothing else matters than that they get to leap and caper about on a stage of their own imaginings, posing as their favorite heroes like Churchill and railing against the iniquities of characters like Chamberlain. Nothing matters but that they get to imagine themselves for a few minutes as lonely warriors for the last best hope.

In reality, as others have said, this is nothing more than a sorry adolescent and childish cult of death, a fascination for destruction that even the increasing multitudes of murdered innocents is never quite enough to satisfy.

The fact remains that some Muslims killed a Western filmmaker

Not only that, the Jews killed Jesus, the Catholics killed the Cathars, and video killed the radio star.

Jeez, that IS scary. Who knows how deep this thing goes!?

  • And these are the same people

...who have been fighting tooth and nail to make the US a religious state, albeit governed by the laws of a different religion.

Yet, as usual, they don't see the irony.

And NotOrbitBoy has you all pegged: "I suspect that the lack of criticism is due to bush hatred. . . . None of the salon columnists want to say anything that may play into bush’s hands. The truth, and principles, don’t matter to them. It’s just about getting bush." Wow! I think you've just summed up Glenn's army - that and the fact that they like to post here for mutual stroking.

    -- Golden Boy

I'll just never mind the irony about the stroking as Golden Boy strokes Notorbitboy.

And I'll just nevermind the absurdity of the remark that two people who think Islam will take over America think they have "Wow", "summed up" anything ever about anything, much less people here at Salon. Due to the outlandish posts made by Golden Boy and Orbitboy, the two of them have eliminated themselves from consideration in the 'summing up' game.

What I won't pay no never mind to is the absurd statement that "truth and principles" are not the reason why Glenn Greenwald, and most of the people who attend this blog, voice a negative opinion about what the Bush administration has done to the America we once knew. We have good reason for feeling and thinking the way that we do. The facts that back up those good reasons are posted here every single day in abundance. To say or to think otherwise is as foolish as believing that "The Islamists are Coming".

That dusty old turd about about "Bush hatred" is yours, Golden Boy. Not ours.

And I've spent plenty of time reviling them -- I'm not a Xian. But the FACT remains that some Muslims in Western democracies are killing people, or threatening to do so, and thereby chilling speech. What is the point of failing to recognize that as heinous, and as an actual problem?

  • Spinning San Francisco

You know, Golden Boy, maybe it's all in how you spin it. To you, innocent students were dragged through the terrible inconvenience of a university student conduct proceeding (in which they were, um, exonerated) in order to appease the angry Muslim mob that was going to... to... well, whatever it was going to do. (Boy, those post-exoneration riots were something, huh?)

But as I see it, this affair was a ringing affirmation that, even in America's most left-wing metropolis, awash in political correctness and crawling with terror symps and raghead-lovers, an odious gang of right-wing nerd-thugs can stomp on Allah's very name in the public square, and their right to do so will be upheld. Forgive me if the "chilling effect" doesn't seem as scary-cold as you would like it to be...

I'd really like to see you toss off that glib and flippant nonsense to Salman Rushdie or the mother of Theo van Gogh. Or the Danish Cartoonists and their families who have gone into hiding.

What is the point of failing to recognize that as heinous, and as an actual problem?

I feel confident in asserting everyone here recognises murder, or threats of murder to be heinous. The degree to which it is an "actual problem" when Muslims do it -- as opposed to anyone else -- is, I think, the point in dispute.

I was being sarcastic before, but for me, Islamism is among the lesser of my long-range concerns, and 90% of the people telling me I should be scared of it are the same ones who have caused this country so many problems in recent years.

In saner times, I too clucked my tongue at stories of the Taliban in the papers, but these days, certain Boys are so desperate to have their own fears validated* that unless you put on a big show of how SERIOUS you take the situation, they won't be happy.

"Oh, so you think bin Laden is bad? Well, do you think he's worse than Hitler?! You don't?! Why are you defending bin Laden?!"

They will throw tantrums until they a) feel everyone is properly scared or b) give up and blame libruls (whoever disagrees with them) for the downfall of America into dhimmitude. And considering some of the consequences that have befallen this kneejerk demonization of Arabas and Islam, I'd at the moment prefer to err on the side of not hating someone enough as is proper than writing off a good portion of the globe as barbaric animals to be exterminated. (note: said bestial animals are also somehow super-powerful and nigh-invulnerable.)

(Not that I think you are like this, this is just why I'm not wasting too much time these days posting about how scared of Islam I am.)

*or something, I dunno what some folks' problem is.
