Hey, check out this short, satirical "You Tube" video blasting O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and other right-wing pundits. You'll love it! And, it's done by an evangelical pastor! www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Hh3xwuH-rE

Re your "straw man" charge: In the column that Glenn excerpted, Simon wrote, "if we lose and fall under religious law..." I assume that "we" in this context means the U.S. or some collective group that would include the U.S., and that "religious" means "Muslim." What could that possibly be referring to, other than a Muslim takeover of the the U.S.?

  • They're not coming, they're HERE.

Glenn can make a good case that the likelihood of the complete takeover of America by Islamist extremists is unlikely. That it's paranoid. Irrational.

I think the same is true regarding salonistas who claim our constitution is being shredded, due to NSA intercepts of suspected terrorist phone calls.

On the other hand, the existence, tolerance, and lack of criticism towards islamic extremists is clear. Read Christopher Hitchens article for a specific example. There are others.

Why can't the left take off their "I hate bush blinders" and see islamic fundamentalism for what it is? When will they criticize it? Demonize it?

Do we have to wait until there is a Democratic in the oval office?

    You call that leadership?

  • Tiberus is an eedjit....

If Bush had gone on national TV before 9/11 and spoke about terrorists planning to run planes into the WTC, ....

If Dubya had known about this, and didn't effin' do sumptin' about it instead of just hyping the talk, I'd think that it's Dubya's head that should be placed on a pike on the national mall....

    Oh, wait....

    Cheers,

  • The problem wasn' that the Russians were coming or the Islamists are coming.

It's that we keep coming. Men keep coming in women. Babies keep coming out of women.

And just as bad is the going. We keep going to work, which is a 45-minute commute, burning oil all the way and discharging carbon monoxide. We keep going shopping and buying by borrowing. We keep going to war and borrowing "evermore, evermore" money to do that.

Coming and going, we're impoverishing the Earth and us.

Again and again, we meet the enemy, and it is us.

NotOrbitBoy: the point, for those without "left-libtard blinders" on, is that I hold my own government - to which I pay tax and support, implicitly or explicitly, as a citizen - to a much higher standard than foreign governments or groups. This does not, obviously imply support of any such group, but rather an ordering of priorities.

Or, to put it in terms you might be more willing to understand, "why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

  • Nice try, NotOrbitBoy.

I think the same is true regarding salonistas who claim our constitution is being shredded, due to NSA intercepts of suspected terrorist phone calls.

False comparison and you know it. The metaphorical-yet-real shredding of Constitutional guarantees in the last six years are well documented. The illegal conduct of the Bush Administration in the field of surveillance has been admited by President Bush himself.

The 'Islamic Horde' these idiots are crowing over simply don't exist.

On the other hand, the existence, tolerance, and lack of criticism towards islamic extremists is clear. Read Christopher Hitchens article for a specific example. There are others.

You clearly don't read much here. No-one here actually supports the many manifestations of Islamic extremists. What you interpret as 'tolerance and lack of criticism' of these movements is anything but; we're discussing a completely different topic, but I daresay are united in our collective loathing of any form of violent extremism.

Oh, Hitchens is perpetually in his cups these days, not to mention bereft of any real status in the world. Who else have you got?

Why can't the left take off their "I hate bush blinders" and see islamic fundamentalism for what it is? When will they criticize it? Demonize it?

Perhaps because (a) none of us here are wearing blinders, (b) recognize Islamic Fundamentalism is no more monolithic than Christian Fundamentalism or Jewish Fundamentalism, and (c) its nowhere near the threat to American society the current Administration poses.

And precisely who, incidentially, is "they" in this context? Muslims around the world, or the readers of this weblog?

  • Answer this if you can

    Gator90,

If you read Simon's comments, you will see that what he means is that progressives have absolutely no common cause with Muslims. This is because Islam is fundamentally illiberal and tyrannical over human behavior. It is no good to point to Islam as a hard alternative to Christianity, because Islam is ultimately the mingling of every person's private life with an enforced, prescriptive way of life.

I am asking Glenn's commentators to address the real issue of creeping Islam into the West, rather than laughing at arguments no one is making about waves of Islamic landing craft hitting our shores.

Why don't (any of) you tell me why you think the cartoons that offended Muslims were republished almost nowhere in the States?

  • @ the boys (Golden & NOrbit)

GBoy--pot, meet kettle. GG is not using a straw man, he is pointing out hypocrisy in the "marketplace" of ideas that is supposed to be our "free & fair press." In fact your invocation Islamofascists from various far-flung regions of the world is a straw-man type of argument--it really has nothing to do with this piece since GG clearly is not defending Islamofascism or Islamism. Go back to your stable--I'm not afraid of Islam, the fascist kind or any other.

What I am afraid of, NOrbit, is people, like you, who put on blinders to the destruction of what makes/made this Nation great--freedom of religion (as opposed to Bush's mandate of the "evangelical christianism"), international treaties (ratified), international law, freedom of the press (what press?), and freedom of speech, or even Bush's oath of office? All of these strengths have been subverted and swept under the rug by zealots, such as yourself, seeking to cover-up incompetence (GWB) or greed (POTUS Cheney).

All of these undermining activities are far more damaging to our long-term prosperity, freedoms and reputation/credibility than any Islamopunk, Bin Laden included. Just run the numbers.
