    What IS Data Mining

    I seem to recall when I first heard about "data mining" it involved a program proposed by or involving John Poindexter that would allow the government to scour public and private databases to identify possible terrorists.

    If I'm correct, that program was rejected and such activities would therefore be illegal.

    There was a different program that recorded and did keyword searches of phone calls.

    So what, exactly, is our government up to?
