The mainstream, sane, serious Joe Lieberman

An alliance between the Connecticut senator and pastors such as John Hagee reveals much about the Beltway mainstream.

The letters thread is now closed.

Revise your remarks

GG wrote about, "neocon and convicted felon Elliot Abrams..."

Wikipedia says Abrams was convicted "on two misdemeanor counts of unlawfully withholding information from Congress during the Iran-Contra Affair investigation." Therefore, pardon aside, Abrams is not a convicted felon.

Lieberman, pal to Senator Clinton and Mike Bloomberg

It would be nice to hear Senator Clinton or Mayor Bloomberg now strongly disassociate themselves from Joe (let's bomb Iran) Lieberman. At the Huffington Post site today there is a post by Max and his video, one of the comments suggest showing the video as a commercial paid for by the Democrats during the Superbowl. Great idea but the MSM would never allow it. Right? Why is that?

O/T: Someone's listening

And we might yet find out what those "other programs" were all about.

Senate Democrats called for a perjury investigation against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Thursday and subpoenaed top presidential aide Karl Rove in a deepening political and legal clash with the Bush administration.

Gonzales is at the center of the U.S. attorney controversy, but the call for a perjury probe involved alleged conflicts between testimony he gave the Judiciary Committee in two appearances, one last year and the other this week. The issue revolves around whether there was internal administration dissent over the president's warrantless wiretapping program.

Has Gore Ever Answered for Choosing Lieberman as VP?

It's beyond question that Lierberman is a total wingnut in league with a dangerous lunatic fringe.

Yet this is the nutjob Gore chose as a running mate, and if not for Bush stealing the 2000 election, he would've been our vice president, a heartbeat from the presidency.

Yet I've never heard Gore taken to task for this egresiously horrid choice for a running mate.

If democrats like Hillary who voted for the Iraq war are required to apologize for it, shouldn't Gore apologize for nearly foisting this religious zealot on us, and repudiate his heinous views on the Middle East?

It doesn't matter what the Bible says if you're Bush

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God"?

Singing statements.

Of course, if Bush were really a Christian and not a Secret Society Crotch Sniffer then his faith might actually be more than a tool he uses to dupe his constituents.

Serious? Insane?

Klein's problem is that "being serious" is considered reaching out and seeking accomadation with the so-called “centrist republicans.” As David Brooks calls them, “those thirty senators who are just looking for an excuse to break with the President.” Anything that deters from that tack is considered too fringe or radical.

Here is the problem. Those “thirty senators” are held captive by the far-right of their party. That radical group drives the agenda for the country (hundreds of millions in Clinton investigations, his impeachment, the stem cell “compromise,” the enabling of a pre-emptive war, the trashing of the Geneva Conventions, the support of an end to checks and balances, support for an Attorney General who consistently is untruthful under oath, the steady erosion of our civil rights, the policies that blindly support Israel (while, ironically, making Israel much more unsafe), the steady drum-beat for war in Iraq, etc. etc.

If those “thirty senators” wanted to break with their partisan ideologues, they have had ample opportunity to do so on a million different occasions. They don’t, thus the litany of disasters mentioned above.

So my definition of the Beltway’s “serious journalism” is people who try to find accommodation with a radical fringe that have never - and will never - accept accommodation. Who honestly expects the President to compromise? My definition of “serious” beltway journalism is exactly the same as my definition for insanity.

Joe Klein - in response to Greenwald - says that “being a "serious person" means the following: you study the facts on the ground, you study the history, you take into account opinions on all sides--not just your side--and then you come to a conclusion.” Err, wouldn't they have to see that the actual results of this “serious” reporting don’t follow logical thought. Facts + History need to trump “taking account opinions on all sides.” Facts and History show us what the last seven years have done to our country, its standing in the world, and the disaster it has unleashed in the Middle East.

Answer for DigitalDave

DigitalDave wondered: 'When Lieberman lost in the 06 primary, all the Dems had to do was announce that, despite being an old friend and comrade, Joe would be stripped of his seniority if he was re-elected as an independent. If the Dems became the majority party, Joe would not hold any chairmanships, nor enjoy voting privileges inside the Democratic caucus room. He would become an outsider to us Dems.'

Forgive me if someone else has already answered this. The Sen. from Tel Aviv broadly hinted that if he was not given his seniority he would caucus with the Repubs & vote for their nominee for majority leader. Given the closeness at the present time of the Senate, that would have flipped it to the Repubs (in a 50 - 50 tie, Darth Cheney gets to do one of his legislative duties).

Due to the ineptness of the Repub nominee in the Conn. Senate race, it became increasingly likely that Lieberman would win all the Repub votes (they sure know who he is) & enough stupid Democrats to win the race. Thus, we had to accede to his blackmail to get Sen Reid as majority leader.

FYI: A different take on Iran, Iraq & Israel

http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=38665

by Gareth Porter

WASHINGTON, Jul 25 (IPS) - As U.S. and Iranian diplomats met in Baghdad Tuesday for a second round of talks on Iraq, the domestic U.S. political climate appears decidedly more supportive of an aggressive U.S. posture toward Iran than just a few months ago, reflecting the apparent triumph the George W. Bush administration's narrative on Iran's role in Iraq...

Joe is the most extreme of the all

You can bet the farm that had Lieberman been president, he would have already launched a massive nuclear attack on Iran. You have to realize that Lieberman is far to the right of the majority of Israelis, who on average, are centrists and moderate. Had Lieberman moved to Israel, he would be on the far right of the Likud party and an avid supporter of the radical settlers, which he is now, while pretending to represent Connecticut in the US senate.
