Glenn: "... What monsters. Thankfully, the U.S. has the moral credibility to vigorously defend such totalitarian and abusive practices. ..."
We all know that Russia is now the world's leading oil producer. I wonder if that colors the Republican propaganda against Putin and Russia at all?
For several years after the USSR fell, our news people hardly noticed Russia was on this planet; now, they are getting the treatment usually reserved for North Korea and similar places. (I hope maximum leader knows they have several nukes!)
It kind of brings to mind the first time I saw someone type IOKIYAR and I had to wonder what it meant.
You may note that most of the original architects of the Bush administration were old Cold Warriors. They stared into the void and it stared back. Now they are what they initially fought. And they rule us.
Feces occurs.
Apparently when Bush looked into Putin's eyes and saw his soul he was so impressed that he started to emulate him.
In contrast, reportedly when Colin Powell was asked what he saw when he looked into Putin's eyes he said: a KGB agent.
9/11 changed everything?
And neither is Keith Olberman, or Jon Stewart or Bill Moyers or Amy Goodman.
And neither was George Orwell.
You are directing the light of the facts through a lens of reason. You are helping to burn away our collective denial and rationalization until all that remains is the heartbreaking truth of our national hypocrisy.
That is not a bad thing. That is a good thing.
That is what democracies are for.
I swear to God, this shit is going to give me an ulcer!!
Who is "we" anymore? It's not "we, the people". No - the people don't approve of any of what is cited as human rights violations.
Bush speaks of "the American people" as if THEY are different than WE.
There is such a fracture between the executive branch and We the People now, that to use "we" as an indicator of the citizenry and the Executive branch is spurious.
The more accurate nomenclature is "the Bush administration" as a distinct, separate and adverserial entity from "We, the People."
I don't live in the "Homeland" where Bush resides, and I hold the Constitution as the document which guides and proscribes my rights and responsibilities as a citizen, which Bush does not.
I'm prety sure that everyone in another government who gets one of our 'do as I counsel, not as you see me do every day' missives just busts a gut laughing at the chutzpah displayed in the exerpts Glenn posted.
I myself (when I can stand watching them) wonder how they keep a straight face (Bush, Snow, other flunkies, etc.) when they get up there & read some of their pronouncements. They must practice.
...go to the link to convince myself this was not a clever spoof.
Astonishing - but not, ultimately, surprising.
Screaming about Evil Gringostan as he locks up writers, teachers, journalists and gays. It's like Sudan and Syrian elected to head up the UN human right's commission.
Hey no one ever said leaders were morally pure, did they? What good is power if you can't abuse it?
Mr Greenwald, but really I don't think we should judge these things until Gen. Petraeus delivers his report in September.
You raise some interesting pointsMr Greenwald, but really I don't think we should judge these things until Gen. Petraeus delivers his report in September.

that surging is creating ponies on every corner, but gosh darn it, we need another Friedman before we really know. Therefore not September, but March.
The gold standard for being considered wise commentary on U.S. foreign policy is that you understand on a very deep level that our establishment is under no responsibility to uphold any of the standards by which we judge our enemies and rivals, and that on an even deeper level such questions about examining what we do versus what we say we do would never occur to you in the first place.
It's okay if you are a globalist, free market capitalist willing to give the U.S. and global multinational corporatists whatever they want?

What the hell is the matter with you? Bush is leader of the uber-power saving the world from IslamofascistHitlerNazis. So, when we commit the human rights abuses we also denounce, that's different.
I trust you will adjust your POV accordingly.

Perhaps it's botox?
We condemn them over there so we do not have to condemn ourselves over here!
What does IOKIYAR stand for?
How did that possibly stay in the Report?
I'd guess the reason is that while they are corrupt, they are also incompetent.

Confidence that Americans will not question basic assumptions. Like Hugo Chavez is an evil dictator who stole an election and has no popular support. Why should we? Our government wouldn't lie to us, would they? I don't know. Do you?
The mendacity of Bush and his followers is plain for all to see. His lawlessness, and wish to be the ultimate 'decider' (read dictator) is also clear. The question is what, if anything, can be done to stop it?
Most Americans appear to lose interest when you talk about constitutional and legal matters. There is no emotional draw.
In order to motivate people into an effective opposition force, they need a emotional link, and the only realistic one is 9/11.
If it could be proven (and it can) that there was government complicity in the deaths of 3000 of their own citizens, the people would rally and oppose their masters.
We appreciate your continuing exposure of crimes and lawlessnes at the highest levels of government. I ask you to go one step further, to help foster a movement that will stop the precipitous decline towards a dictatorship with no rule of law. It seems in essence that this is what has happened anyway. The Congress is not impeaching, and Bush is getting away with essentially the powers of a dictator. There is little time remaining before he will have unlimited power.
As a New Yorker, I ask you to promote the cause of 9/11 Truth. The issue is not going away. You can only ignore the elephant in the room for so long. Add your voice to the many who are already speaking out. Magna est veritas...
