  • I can tell you're not exactly a deep thinker

Perhaps not, but I do stand my ground.

And if you check my history, you'll find that I stand rather in the middle of the pack here at GG. I agree that name-calling and ignoring the fact that most of the electorate is politicly uninvolved and susceptible to first impressions is counterproductive. But your mode of thinking is exactly what caused Congress to cave on the war-funding bill. And its moved the political center of the country so far to the right as to be unrecognizable. The mission of liberals should be twofold. One is of course to win elections but the other is to educate people on why the elections deserve to be won.

  • Jeff

I am with you 100%, especially on the L word. I do not understand how the democrats became the more fiscally responsible party and the GOP is now the party of big government.

  • Sickly Skeptic

    There is no more "middle".

Maybe health care reform will get you a better doctor, eh?

  • unhealthyskeptic

You know, I have never seen healthyskeptic and Charles007 post in the same blog at the same time.....

Anyway, I think that we should support those who need to be supported, shut down those who are too fringe and radical, and speak to the center to prevent them from taking over, because action is important, and we need to have a substantive discussion here.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

  • I'm not a deep thinker

But I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night with Healthy Skeptic's mother and even she said the guy is a douchebag.

  • Skep

You're really not trying to hold a conversation, are you? I shouldn't need to wear out my fingers explaining to you what is what. Obviousfuckingly when I say left blogs I'm not speaking of some obscure examples. I'm speaking of the ones that most all of us are quite aware of.

A lot of words were written and a lot of money was raised on the left blogs. For example, a bunch of them pooled into one and called it Blue America.

Really. I don't think you're listening. You seem to be arguing for the sake of argument.

Tedious behaviour. I've seen enough of that from another commenter on this site lately to last me for a long while.

  • gotta be kidding

By and large, the lefties are harmless. Completely harmless. They don't wave guns around, don't bomb abortion clinics or federal buildings.

That shows real ideological bubbling and a kind of glorified self image that's kind of amazing. Talk about the "savior" complex that fringes are so known for, the notion they do no harm, that pisses everyone else off so much.

As just one example: hippies did no harm? They helped divide and poured fuel on all the other fires already raging in that era, got a lot of people fucked up on drugs, and spurred an over zealous counter-culture that way overshot the mark from any useful opposition to what was wrong with conservative America, which was plenty.

How about the fringe who tree-camp and sabotage logging companies and such? What do they have in common with actual climate scientistsaand biologists arguing for species protection and biodiversity and such? Nothing. They're just a bunch of fuck-ups. They make environmentalism look bad and give lots of ammunition to the Rt Wing to deride all environmentalists as hippies.

How about the fringe anarchists and kooks who break windows and burn cars and shit at the WTO? Are they helping economic justice, or are they just fuck-ups?

The far left has done a lot of harm, often to themselves in the long run, but they piss off a lot of the middle in the process.

And there are plenty of them represented on blogs as well, and too often legitimized by popular left sites.

  • The Far Left

It must be snuffed out before it infects us all!

  • Snark

Couldn't resist, but I am somewhat confused.

Given the discussion on another thread about something jeremys posted, where many people's snark meter was not up to speed...where does the Major fall?

Serious question. It is too funny, but not out of what one might expect, making it...pitch perfect.

I will go on the assumption that it is snark. Great stuff, and in just the right amount. Keep it up...occasionally.

  • The Major

    Is..

  • This guy is no skeptic

He's just a contrarian, and a rather dumb one at that.

I canceled my subscription specifically when Salon became a tabloid on par with checkout isle trash. Only Salon is worse by the pretense of being liberal-minded, educated, and enlightened enough to raise serious issues. I would subscribe again if Salon would clean up and host more real journalists and intelligent opinion, but Salon seems to be going in the complete opposite direction.

Soon, I doubt Salon will even host enough quality articles for me or many others to bother visiting the page, or make posts such as this, and generate page views in the process. Then where Salon be?

  • David Broder?

I would subscribe again if Salon would clean up and host more real journalists and intelligent opinion, but Salon seems to be going in the complete opposite direction.

    Is that you?

  • BROADSHEET is "lefty fringe"?!

Surely you jest. As others have noted, the fringe there is generally in the comments, which contain a frightening number of truly misogynist whackjobs.

  • Everyone is male

I thought for a few days about why I had such an entrenched assumption that Digby was male...There is something about her writing voice that just makes people think she's male. It's an interesting question as to why that is. I still haven't really figured that out.

Our bedrock assumption is always that, unless we have information to the contrary, an unknown individual is a man. We don't even have language to describe a person with an unknown gender. There is no neutral gender - the unknown is always "he" (and white and heterosexual).

This goes doubly when someone speaks with authority. That is why Digby's voice "sounds male".

There's an old braintwister that goes: A man and his son are in a terrible car accident. The man is killed and the boy is taken to a nearby Emergency Room and rushed into surgery. The surgeon walks in, looks at the boy and says "I can't do this operation this boy is my son." What is the relationship of the the doctor to the boy?

It takes a remarkable amount of thought for most people to get to the answer, and many never do, that the surgeon is the child's mother. The doctor is a woman.
