The Art of Propaganda
As always, the problem is not that many people are partisan hacks. The problem is that so many of them pretend to be something else.
I hope Mike Allen responds to this piece - I wonder what possible defense he has?

President Will Lie
June 2, 2007 / WASHINGTON, D.C. White House Spokesman Tony Snow announced today that President George W. Bush will tell an elaborate yet simple-minded lie on Monday at noon Eastern Daylight Time. This lie will involve Iraq, the US economy, and climate change.
Mr. Snow told the assembled White House press corps that the President will support his lie with falsehoods and cliches. He said that the President also will grudgingly, combatively, belatedly admit a few scraps of obvious truth and/or reality, insofar as those items may be twisted to support his lie.

Eureka! The Mystery of the Beltway Bull****ers--- solved!
Just thinking outside the box here, but hmmm.... what if... Mike Allen, just like fellow wingnut David Frum, is sucking on some corporate teat for creating this moronic propaganda?
http://www.harpers.org/archive/2007/05/hbc-90000176
In the words of Peggy Noonan: "Is it irresponsible to speculate? It's irresponsible not to!"

Fish rots from the head
With Jim VandeHie, a well known wingnut worshiper at the helm, we should expect no less.
Birds of a feather....

Yo, Mikie....
We know you're reading this......
"In fact, the White House's principal response to Waas' story, copied so efficiently by Allen, appears to be factually false, as the order unearthed by Waas does not seem to have been published in the Federal Register at all. Indeed, the memo itself prominently bears the designation: "Internal Order -- Not Published in F.R.". And the only seemingly relevant Federal Register entry does not remotely constitute publication of that delegation. Did Allen even look at the memo or the Federal Register to see if the claims he mindlessly repeating were true? It's hard to believe he did."
My question to you is: Did you fact check your comment regarding the memo's inclusion in the FR?
If so, you are a liar and I shouldn't believe a word you publish.
If not, you couldn't pop a pimple on a real journalist's ass and I shouldn't believe a word you publish.
Your choice.

@Paul Dirks
Is "ass kisser" the phrase you were thinking of?

Ah, memories
Sayeth WaPo's coverage, translated:
Bartlett orchestrated the suppression of Bush's dereliction of duty in the Texas Air National Guard.
Good man to have around.

Is "ass kisser" the phrase you were thinking of?
I refuse to answer on the grounds that I may disqualify myself as a source of measured and reasoned discourse.
-
I believe that "Beltway teabagger" is the term of art
Let's try not to use terms that involve the word "licking."
That creates way too many unpleasant pictures, don't you think?
-
One of my favorites...
QUOTE
____________
The reason Bartlett and the president were so close is that "they share a Texas view of life," which includes their mutual "casual manner and a manly humor..."
___________
Most grown Americans would be ashamed to think this, much less write it down for public consumption.
I liked the "zen-like calm" thing also.

Jebbie:
My question to you is: Did you fact check your comment regarding the memo's inclusion in the FR?
Just to be clear, the claim about its being published in the Federal Register was something he quoted from an anonymouse White House official.
But as common as it is, it's just amazing to imagine a journalist passing that along without bothering to find out if it's true - did he ask to see the F.R. entry? What is the point of printing White House statements without having any idea if they're true and without bothering to find out.
And read the item - it's all framed to make it seem like Waas' article and Leahy's reaction to the secret memo was some baseless hysteria when it turns out all along - ha ha ha - that it was published in the Federal Register!

Wonder if GOP Pundits Realize....
That thier careers may be over in another 18 months.
will they change thier names? Change publication titles?
Politico-Smolitico?
Heritage Foundation-Heretics Foundation?
Drudge report-Sludge Report?
Meet the Press-Meet the Dress?
CNN-CNOUT?
I could keep going---but I'll spare ya.
You get the point.

The Politico and its owner
It's probably not irrelevant that The Politico is ultimately financed by a personal friend of General Pinochet. It would not be wrong to say that if The Politico publishes something, it is because a close personal friend of Pinochet wanted it so.
The Politico was expressly crafted to be a political magazine.
It's not the journalist who decides what gets published, it's his editor -- but it's not ultimately the editor either, but rather the owner.
What kind of press ethics do you think a close personal friend of Pinochet might have?
(The ultimate policy setter at The Politico would be Joe L. Allbritton, according to http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/05/04/politico_funding/index.html )

Not merely stenographer, but validator
He is a mindless disseminator of government statements, at least insofar as the government is in the hands of right-wing operatives.
It's worse than that. Because he always quotes these sources anonymously, he is endorsing them as complete and accurate. By using blind quotes, his reputation becomes the source of credibility of the quotes. In principle, because their anonymity should imply some degree of risk for the source, these quotations should be still more credible.
But when they simply represent the administration's line, they diminish his credibility.

Truth Teller?
Most outrageous is the "truth teller" handle. The very role of this toad was to lie to the public; that was his job description. Did telling the truth within the White House involve telling aWol that invading Iraq would be a disaster? If not, he served us not.

Ah, Der
"Just to be clear, the claim about its being published in the Federal Register was something he quoted from an anonymouse White House official."
You aren't suggesting that he might try the "Putz Defense" are you?
Re: "(I)just talked to a reporter from Salon who wanted to know if I was going to "retract" an earlier blog post in which I said it looked as if Plame wasn't covert. I noted that one normally issues a retraction for original reporting, not commenting upon other people's news stories."
(Insta)Putz to Salon: I am Instapundit, bitches!
Does that make Allen a member of the Putzen?
H/T to Blue Texan
