Right-wing blogs discover massive conspiracy to hide WMDs in Iraq

The embrace by leading neoconservatives and other war supporters of the most bizarre and deranged conspiracy theories speaks volumes about their credibility and judgment.

The letters thread is now closed.

Resisting conspiracy

Melanie Phillips is on the right track, except for blaming President Bush. Our missteps in Iraq are entirely the fault of Powell and Rice who did their utmost from the beginning to sabotage the whole effort. If one is to fault President Bush, it is for buying into this affirmative action crap. If he really wants to go that route, then Thomas Sowell would be infinitely preferable in charge of Foggy Bottom. However John Bolton would really shine there. Bob Gates at Defense is no help either. Now might be a good opportunity to put Wolfowitz in charge, as a recess appointment if need be.

As for keeping track of mosques and other subversion centers, that's a great idea. It doesn't go far enough though. One should compile a comprehensive list of all Moslems in the USA, publish it extensively on the internet and elsewhere and develop individual initiatives for combatting the malevolent influence of ethnic Islamic jihadism.

Re: mapping sharia project suggestion

I feel the sharia database and mapping project would be more useful to me, as an individual user, if they included the locations of all Starbucks Coffee shops nationwide. This is not because I view Starbucks Coffee outlets as a threat to our national security, or to our american way of life, but rather because I drive a bit in my work and I enjoy a nice coffee on the road.

Local, independent coffee shops would be fine too. These should be added as well, I think.

Come to think of it, the locations of Mosques and Muslim learning centers should probably be deleted from the database, as these probably don't serve coffee to the public. And their entries just get in the way of finding a good coffee place. So then, to sum up the above, add all the coffeehouse data, then delete the Islamic data. Thank you.

Saddam's WMD and US Dollars

In the midst of the initial invasion, it was reported that US forces were tracking three tractor trailors loaded with nearly a Billion Dollars of Saddam's US cash. Was this a diversion so that we missed entire convoys of trucks carrying hundreds of tons of WMD's through Jordan to Syria, ... really? The "Fog of War" seems to have blinded our eyes in the skies surveilling the Iraqi wilderness.

Or, ... just maybe, ... our intelligence officer is not so intelligent as he is intellectually or psychologically incompetent, ... maybe an over-exposure to DU in the theatre there in Iraq. Take a deep breath "Inspector Gumbotz", and clear your mind!

Seems to me the Riechpublicans are keen to sell the same war over and over to the end, eh?

Please look at that web site!

It is nuts, to the point of incomprehensible. I created an account for George Boosch, and made a post warning against the hidden Soviet WMDs in Finland. Probably won't make it into print.

But, please look at the site. (Glenn provided a link.) Try to read the intro. It is cuckoo. Does not even have rational phrases.

This fitst right in with the right wing

Prior to gaining power, the modus operandi of the conservative movement was the conspiracy theory. The enemy within. The 5th column. Socialists/communists trying to take over. Black helicopters. The New World Order. The list goes on and on.

While conservatives held power the babbling about such things subsided. It's hard to say that you're fighting to stop the evil core of the evil government when you ARE the government. But it just shows how ingrained this meme is with the right wing that it returns now, when they've lost some (but by no means all) of their power. It's paranoia, pure and simple, and it's so powerful within their mindset that it's triggered the moment they don't have absolute control. (Or at least the perception of absolute control.)

It's this fundamental insecurity that makes them authoritarians, so it doesn't surprise me at all that this "enemy within" meme has sprung back up. I expected it to be back when/if democrats took back the white house, but I guess this means it'll just be extra strong once that happens.

are you kidding?

I didn't read the 14 pages of letters on the right wing conspiracy about WMDs, so someone may well have already pointed out what is so obvious, but come on, how could the incompetent Bush Administration pull off such an incredible conspiracy? Is it because they have also involved the always competent democrats?

partisanship and truth

xititjur99 said: "the majority (if not the vast majority) of wingnuts do not believe in global warming for one reason and one reason only: Because Al Gore does."

True. But it is merely a single, tho paradigmatic, instance of a more general problem: that right-wing types believe all aspects of politics reduce to a matter of opinion, as opposed to grounded in fact. Many of my Republican friends are aware of how the current administration has let them down, but they still accept all the rhetoric, primarily, it seems, because DENYING the rhetoric implies AGREEING with the Democrats. Take any issue: if a Democrat gets out front and speaks the truth, Republicans (even the non-venomous ones) will ultimately reject that view, presumably because of a political identification.

The problem, it seems to me, is the tendency of average people to be seduced by the meta-rhetorical point hammered home by Neocons, Nixonians, GOPers all the way back: there are no facts, only beliefs. And the flip side as well: facts can always be disputed, but beliefs are unshakable.

One other point: the difference between the left and the right is no longer found in the opposing political philosophies each side embraces. Rather, the characteristic which increasingly characterizes 'the left' is merely expressing what would otherwise be obvious and inarguable statements of fact.

@Democratus re: "huh?"

Oh, I took enormous comfort from my total inability to understand that intro at Gaubatz's SANE site. Had it made sense to me, it would certainly be time to conclude that in addition to some of my other issues, I must add psychosis to the list.

Be glad for your confusion; embrace it. You are healthy.

WMDs in Iraq

These goofy nuts would be laughable except that thousands of people have died proving them wrong.......as Bush sinks into the muck of Karl Rove's reality, these poor fools have to say something!.....they are proof that in American societ the exception gets the attention and in the process can often seem to be the rule....they only good thing is that as they become more and more delusional even "ordinary folks" catch on and reject this nonsense even as the media stars embrace it.If you keep up this scrutiny ,maybe people will start to think rationally again.
