Right-wing blogs discover massive conspiracy to hide WMDs in Iraq

The embrace by leading neoconservatives and other war supporters of the most bizarre and deranged conspiracy theories speaks volumes about their credibility and judgment.

The letters thread is now closed.

Lack of evidence

Rich Emory hits the nail on the head:

The complete and utter LACK of evidence somehow is transformed into ALL THE PROOF THAT IS NEEDED, and in fact disproves any evidence supporting the contrary position.

In fact, this paradoxical methodology has been employed by the neocons from the beginning. Back during the Ford Admin, Rumsfeld and the other neocons running an alternative intelligence analysis group (I forget the name) showed their proof that the Soviet submarine technology surpassed our own. By showing that there were actually no signs that the Soviets had advanced sub technology, they proved that the Soviet technology must be so far beyond ours that we were unable to detect it! (Seriously, this happened. Track down the BBC documentary "The Power of Nightmares.")

This is a huge philosophical leap, to believe that the absolute lack of evidence of the thing you want to prove exists therefore proves that it exists. I'm not a psychologist, but I would expect this is a symptom of some well-documented condition. The wild thing is, a shockingly high percentage (30%) of our population suffers from this condition. And so far, there appears to be no cure!

And people are worried about bird flu?

As Nutcase As Gaubatz Seems--And Is--Consider This

Glenn's updates and the tip-off comments have introduced us to a Wonderland, indeed. But, really no stranger than the JBS and it's fellow travellers. Not to repeat myself, I want to point out a pamphlet I remember, through hysterical fits of laughter, from the 1960s, Communism, Hypnotism And The Beatles.

Cover image here:

http://www.boingboing.net/images/BeatlesCommies-1.jpg

It's been a long time since I read it--well, not read, exactly, but skimmed for yucks. I recall that it went on quite seriously about how the rhythmic music was used to induce hypnosis, and the destruction of the will--linking it Pavlov, and sounding very scientific (in his own mind, that is).

The table of contents for another work of his, Rhythm, Riots and Revolution--which seems to cover much of the same material--can be found here:

http://www.taxhelp.com/noebel-rhythm.html

Here's how it starts:

Part One: INTRODUCTION ..... 16

1. Communist Use of Mind Warfare ..... 17

2. Power of Music for Good or Evil ..... 19

3. Communist Use of Hypnotism ..... 21

4. Pavlov, Luria and Platonov ..... 22

5. Communist Infiltration ..... 27

There have always been literal swarms of people like this in America's right wing. I remember wandering into a right wing bookstore as a teenager in the 60s, and feeling like I had entered an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Homeland Security

GG:

The project to which Dave Gaubatz is currently devoting his time is called "Mapping Sharia in America", the purpose of which is to create a comprehensive map of every mosque and Islamic school in the U.S.

Can we please start creating a comprehensive map of everywhere Dave Gaubatz wanders, because I'm pretty sure he's about to blow. Truly. He needs an ankle bracelet.

Gaubatz the "Intelligence Expert"

As "Avram" commented at Henley's about Gaubatz's discovery of under-the-Euphrates WMD bunkers and how they were constructed:

That’s right — Saddam’s urge for secrecy was so great that he diverted the Euphrates for the duration of a major construction project. Because there’s no way that the US would have noticed that with spy satellites or anything.

I'm with Prunes, this silliest of silly stuff is too hilarious.

Can we all just get over it?

Look, despite the millions of victims and survivors (and surviving perpetrators), there are still people who believe the Holocost never happened. So it's safe to assume there will always be people who believe virtually any proposition of historical fact, whether it be that Saddam had WMDs when (or just before) the US invaded or whether or not GW Bush (or the Israeli's) really blew up the World Trade Centers. Let's get over it. (The brilliance of conspiracy theories is that any evidence tending to disprove the theory is evidence of the conspiracy, lack of evidence is evidence of the conspiracy, so the theory is like an undead zombie, impossible to kill.)

The real fact of the matter is that regardless of the WMDs, the war is judged by whether or not we leave Iraq better than we found it, and suffer no more costs than the results were worth. In that light, the war is clearly a failure, regardless of whether there were no WMDs (as the inspectors suspected and GW Bush has admitted) or there were WMDs that are now in the hands of other enemies of the USA.

For more on the incredible number of major blunders of this whole war and strategy, see this article in the generally sober Financial Times of London:

Don't believe Melanie Phillips

You must bear in mind that Melanie Phillips (aka Mad Mel) is not a rational person. In the UK she's part of the lunatic right-wing fringe and I'm surprised that even The Spectator (a right-wing magazine) printed this crap.

What IS scary is how right-wing blogs can pick up this sort of tripe and, by dint of repetition, give it some sort of legitimacy.

Punctuation, Glenn -- Punctuation!

"....the Terrorists ...."

You didn't capitalize the 'the'.

For Shame.

Re John Birch Society

Oddly enough, the Birchers have been against the Iraq war from the beginning -- too expanding of the executive and of federal power. So, while they may be strange, and have certainly touted some odd stuff in the past, they're hanging out with the libruls on this one.

Not all right wingers think alike, anymore than Joe Lieberman represents most Dems who post here (I would guess the latter to be the case anyway...)

about that Sharia mapping project

How seriously do you all take this guy? This project sounds like a KKK-like fantasy come true-- a AAA Guide for domestic terrorism.

I don't think even Gonzo wants to suppress minority voting like that. Do you suppose the authorities are aware of this project? All that federal snooping has got to be of some use.

How seriously do you all take this guy?

He has been linked to approvingly by Michelle Malkin who in turn has been profiled approvingly by Howie Kurtz. Only 2 degrees of separation between a complete lunatic and the WaPo!
