...but it seems, shooter, your current scapegoat for Democratic malfeasance seems to have some fairly prominent Republican friends too:
You've never heard the expression about politics making for strange bedfellows? Hastert sided with Jefferson too. which I thought odd as well. Looking a bit farther I can see why Representatives who have claimed immunity from the law are worried. Think about that. Immunity from the law. From Wiki...
The Speech or Debate Clause (found in Article I, Section 6, Clause 1) is a clause in the United States Constitution which states that members of both Houses of Congress
“ ...shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony, and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their attendance at the Session of their Respective Houses, and in going to and from the same, and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.
This would seem to be an open and shut case for the upcoming judgement on what can be used against Jefferson. Goodness knows I'd like to see some Democrat chairmen investigated. These days everything is a felony, and there are worse things than having Government tied up in trial after trial. It could be the beginning of real bipartisanship.
I haven't seen a "liberal" poster yet defend the guy. It seems like he's a crook, and is going to get what's coming to him soon. I've seen no rush to defense by the Dems, and they aren't in a position to block investigations of him. Pelosi pushed him off the House Ways & Means committee, but he managed to get himself re-elected anyhow.
So is this the best you can do, shooter? Fling sand in the eyes of your opponents? Things are looking mighty grim if that's all your left with: "a pox on both your houses."
Glenn, thanks for your efforts. Your work is stellar. This particular topic would make for a stellar 30 second TV spot - the scandalous nature of this activity is just THAT transparent.
These days everything is a felony, .

Except, apparently, being an insufferable asshole, since you're still wandering around free.
It's not like Jefferson is going on all the Sunday talk shows a la Tom DeLay claiming it's nothing more than a partisan witch hunt, either. Pretty much all of DeLay's Republican brethren voiced dismay publicly at how he was "treated." Even the White House defended DeLay. And he's only one. There's Randy "Duke" Cunningham, and Bob Ney, and Mark Foley. All these guys defiantly proclaimed their innocence. Jefferson will get what's coming to him. Count on it. In fact, Republicans prefer that his case remain unresolved so they can keep pointing to it as an example. They need every bone they can dig up for folks like shooter.
Nor does Jefferson has any sort of "immunity." If that were the case, we wouldn't know anything at this point. The only reason we know about the $90,000 at all is because his home and office were searched. It doesn't sound like immunity in my book. And it's not surprising in the least that Hastert defended Jefferson. They are two peas in a pod.
I said this already: The courts have already ruled against Jefferson and the Legislative branch's amicus curae filing.
Also, since you bring him up, note that Pelosi stripped him of his ways and means seat before he was even indicted (which, he still has not been).
That's how an honest party deals with an implicated member within its midst. Take the cookie jar away from them. Republicans were trying to change their own Contract With America rules to allow Delay to keep his Majority Leader post after being indicted on multiple felony counts.
Jefferson was never chair nor even ranking member of Ways and Means. Don't pretend there is equivalence between him and Purgegate or Delay's indictment or the violations of the Hatch Act, or the missing emails.
Jefferson is comparable perhaps to Duke cunningham. Whom Republicans defended strongly until he confessed.
Exactly how many times will further evidence of this administrations incompetence and/or corruption come to light before we pull the plug on this ongoing American disaster?
Any employee, and that is what Bush is, would have been fired long ago for such ongoing and repeated negligence. It's preposterous that we all sit around picking sides to "debate" if this or that was illegal or not. The evidence, both real and circumstantial, has mounted so high it's choking us all. Let's fix this. I wonder how far they could take the "it's not illegal, we're just really bad at this" defense.
In my mind it is not important that this administration "only" has 1 1/2 years left or that this sweeping of an impeachment would grind our government to a halt. So be it. It is far more dangerous to allow such pervasive incompetence and corruption to be allowed to go unpunished. It is a horrible precedent to set and sends a terrible message to our citizens, or political leaders and to the world at large. I for one hope that something is done and done soon... We need to call this president and all his men and simply say - you're fired.
You know, at first I just thought I was being clever, but you really schooled me with that lesson in political strategery! I never would have thought that self interest and mutual backscratching could ever motivate the formation of political alliances. You learn something new every day.

Now, it would be nice if you maybe showed the same concern for similar claims and behavior coming from occupants of the highest office in the land.
Baby steps, baby steps.
75,000 Voter Registration Cards Found in Trash Bin in Atlanta
ATLANTA (AP) -- The Georgia Secretary of State's office has begun an investigation into who threw more than 75,000 Fulton County voter registration cards into a trash bin.
The cards contained a voter's full name, address and Social Security number. The office says a random sampling showed many of the cards were for active voters.
