  • When all the neocons have is a hammer

every problem looks like a nail.

    No kings,

    Robert

  • Ghetto Language

Newt's batting 1.000 this week. He called Spanish the "language of the ghetto" this week.

If he's a true conservative, everything we've been saying about conservatives is true.

  • Well, Does Newt Like Leather Shorts and Swords?

Surely we could send Newt & Co. over to Iran "300" style to parade around in leather shorts, bare-chested, and with swords, and the Iranians will surrender because they cannot stop vomiting.

  • The beginning of their end?

McCain has humilitated himself with his recent pronouncement about Iraq and has proved an anemic fundraiser.

Guiliani has expounded a theory of executive power explicitly rejected by even those advocating a legally sound "unitary executive".

None of the other Republican 'candidates' for President appear to have the national stature to compete effectively.

Gingrinch was the last Republican with any national name recognition who hadn't yet gone completely off the map on the Middle East. Now he has.

    Who is left? Santorum? Ashcroft?

  • Twice

    Who is left? Santorum? Ashcroft?

    -- Iokannan in the Well

Point well taken, but this country did elect Bush. Twice.

    Anything is possible.

  • Junior High

I'm almost 38, but I can remember a little bit about junior high school. Neocons seem pretty much like what I remember of the junior high school bully. Essentially, their "strategy" is that if people don't do what they want, they'll beat them up and take their lunch money, maybe give them a 'snuggie' to embarrass them in front of their peers. It scares me that there are people who want these guys to run our country. It sickens me that they currently do.

  • It remains quite mysterious...

I wonder if this refusal to speak to or otherwise engage our purported enemy is simply a refusal to allow for the possibility that they aren't the devil incarnate and in fact are rational actors with their own self interest at heart. After all, recognizing someone's humanity is a prerequisite for negotiation. As such it would represent a failure of the demonization process.

And we all know that our friends at GE and Raytheon (not to mention Disney) have a rather sizable stake in the demonization process.

  • Pure speculation on my part,

but what if they really got their wish? What if they really got a super-warrior who always resorted to cruise missiles and so forth whenever there was any sort of conflict of interest to be found?

Eventually this sort of thing must eat itself, I think. Like the extremists that eventually start to find non-believers amongst the most extreme believers once the undesirables are finally disposed of, the perpetual war-mongers must eventually turn on themselves when there are no more worlds to conquer.

I think there are times to take up the sword. As naive as I frequently am, I don't believe that there will ever be a unilateral, global end of war, and I do think there are times to take up arms, always acknowledging that that's a difficult decision with far-reaching consequences.

I just think, eventually, the neocons would even turn on Mars for "insufficient will to war."

The trick is changing the national consciousness, and course of action, before they can damage anyone else.

    No kings,

    Robert

  • Bring It On

Newt and the rest of the Repubs consistently come off like the biggest assholes in the local high school.

Newt, all you've done is show the planet that you're the tiny little dog straining at the leash, yipping your little head off at the German Shepherd, knowing that you'll never have to back your words up with deeds of your own. That's what all those kids who grew up speaking ghetto languages are for.

All of you laughable "tough" guy chickenhawks are wracked with achingly obvious self-esteem problems.

  • One of the best posts yet

It's hard to list a top five. So many candidates. This one may have an edge due to it's "subject" and the content this "subject" provides. That and the fact that it does make you laugh, when you finally get over the astonishment and revulsion that American statecraft has been reduced to this:

    "...[Y]ou're tiny and we're not."

    It's just cartoon-like.

  • I wonder if Xerxes said something similar...

...to that tiny band of 300 Spartans.

    Hubris.

  • Calling Dr. Freud

NG: ... But frankly, if you'd prefer to show the planet that you're tiny and we're not, we're prepared to simply cut off your economy ...

I'd say it's pretty obvious what's really tiny here.

  • Happy Easter from Iran to Newt

Well, if this is any indication of what we can expect from Iran in the future . . .

My first thought was, "What an amazing PR stunt!" My second thought was, "Where is James Carville these days? Is he consulting to Ahmadinejad?"

Then I thought, "Good for you, Tony Blair. You finally did it," "it" being the opposite of what America has been doing for the past six years. "It" being diplomacy.

  • I agree with Newt

I mean, our brethren in the Middle East have responded so well to threats and public belittlement in the past, we should just keep on doing it, right?

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again...

... The best thing the Republicans could do for Democrats for the next couple decades would be to run a McCain/Gingrich ticket in 08. In fact, I pray for it every day.

  • what's eating the Newt?

The most disgusting thing I find about Newt's conversation is that he has no consideration for the safe return of the soldiers. All he cares about is how tough he is.

  • Does the rest of the world notice?

    Glenn,

Does the rest of the world see what you see? If so, at what point will they realize that it is in their best interest to unite against the world bully?

  • Successful diplomacy threatens these "tiny" bullies to the core

Let’s be explicit about why the “conservatives” are so upset with this outcome: it proves that “diplomacy works.”

This threatens their world-view to the very core. For them, diplomacy is a sign of weakness - it is for “girly men” only. That’s why macho leader Bush won’t have anything to do with it.

Dan Riehl (who so desperately wants to prove he isn’t “tiny”) is explicit in his condemnation, going so far as to accuse Tony Blair of being “teh Gay.”

Maybe the Queen will lend a hand to move things along and wear the hijab at her next state affair, assuming Britain still qualifies as a sovereign state by then. We shouldn't count on any more support from the Brits in any international military confrontation. And not surprisingly, the libs will probably blame the fall of the British Empire on Bush. feh

I always suspected Blair had a touch of teh Gay.

Goodness these bullies are insecure – and “tiny” too.
