On shooterism
David Brooks is the suave apologist and creator of new administrative euphemisms for our Jesus-freak dirigistes. Shooter is the crude mouthpiece. He reminds me of the old fascist wall posterL
Credere! (Believe!)
Obbedire! (Obey!)
Combattere! (Fight!)
If you added Lavorare! (Work!) to this list, you'd have shooter down perfectly. Those four words are a perfect distillation of months of his comments here. Get him a camicia nera and a hat with a tassle on top, and send him off to invade Abysinia. His work is done here.

Yellow Dog
Catch up to what?
I'm already quite conversant on the current abuses of power, I'm just pointing out that the roots of those abuses lie much further back than most people are willing to admit.
Any citizenry that has been conditioned to piss in a cup on demand in order to "prove their innocence" has very little fight left in them.
I'm not sanguine about the prospects for freedom in the USA.

Way to resist temptation
It must have been hard to write that without using the word "fascism."

@ 2
you're an uneducated asshole.
Don't you have an effigy of a soldier to burn or a US flag to shit on?
I happen to be very well-educated asshole.
Don't you have a strawman to beat up?

Before I take 3-shooter shots...or....more? Count the first and the last. 2+2=4
3-shots of Castor oil please? Put it on my bill.
A comment made me think of a Beelzebub tale. Beelzebub, the Big devil asked the lesser legions Odo devils,
*"Where can we hide the dark side devil?"*
There were committee meetings, hearings, independent inquires by the judicial Dept's Dog's (not the good dogs here), and many oversight congressional staff who kept abreast to inform the key-barrister charlan recipients. Both the House and Senate felt and appeared dreadful. O, they even began to meet in eve-time in 'ole wigwams? The main big demon's agreed, and the footprints that followed inside and outside the White House were not red tulips, either. A given is right.
* Hide 'evil-dark' under the rug? The moon? O, somebody may go to the moon and look under to sweep the rug. Beelzebub said we hide the diabolic-dark-nature within the heart! The false, care-concern, blabbering "conservative" imperial-wealth-expansion movements, by whatever name......Never look within their dark heart.*
They write with bloody palm. They write a message that kills. They (hate to say they), use mystical fingers and hands, dip into red-inkwells, and then dare lift up a bloody palm with a feather quill for all us to see.....grasping and waving, expecting our respect? no.

jots and tittles
First of all, I take great pleasure in reading the missives about my bete noir, David Brooks. I loathe him like no other for the way he embodies mediocrity and exalts his own pedestrian and middle-class observations into some type of Delphic Oracle. Along with Tom Friedman, Maureen Dowd and that other guy on the op-ed page I don't read, Paul Krugman is the lone voice in the wilderness on those pages. (Except for the letters and guest columnist. Kristoff and Herbert seem to me--one of the "most Americans" that Brooks speaks for-- irrelevant.) Brooks has taken a small, unoriginal idea and made a career out of it: his "Bobos in Paradise" arguably launched him into the stratosphere of the MSM. Thank you Glenn, for reading this dickhead so I don't.

Excellent, excellent post, Glenn!
You have nailed it by pointing out that what were originally considered to be 'deviations' from conservative ideals have become the primary goals of the neocon movement.
We are expected now to accept permanent 'temporary' deviations from
The USAPATRIOT act will never be voluntarily repealed. The wiretapping program will never be voluntarily shut down. If we had every single terrorist of any account locked up tomorrow, the Republicans would not change a one of their policies. They would not begin to restrain spending.
They are like addicts who tell themselves that they are really trying very hard, and that just another little bump is all they need to get through what has been a rotten day... and they do this day in and day out, forever and ever, world without end, until their (our) pocketbooks are emptied and their (our) friends have given up and abandoned them.
But the deviations in our ideals are not temporary. They are just so flagrantly WRONG that even the Republicans must convince themselves that they are temporary, because otherwise they would have to face the actual consequences of their insane policies.

what they are
The neoconservatives are trying to accomplish what fascists wanted to accomplish, but minus the overt violence.
A while ago I mentioned that Italian fascism got kickstarted by a writer. His name was Gabriele D'Annunzio. And guess who wrote an admiring biography of him - Michael Ledeen. Ledeen is particularly fond of the notion of "creative destruction."
I also said that John Yoo might be described as the Carl Schmitt of the Bush administration. In his book which is advertised to the right of this page, Conason notes that Leo Strauss wrote the following to his mentor Carl Schmitt in 1932 shortly before Schmitt became the primary Nazi legal theorist:
"The ultimate foundation of the Right is the principle of the natural evil of man, because man is by nature evil, he therefore needs dominion"*
Conason also notes that in 1933 Strauss wrote the following to a Jewish friend:
"Just because the Germany of the Right does not tolerate us [Jews] it simply does not follow that the principles of the right are therefore to be rejected. On the contrary, only on the basis of the principles of the right - fascist, authoritarian, imperialistic - is it possible in a dignified manner, without the ridiculous and pitiful appeal to the 'inalienable rights of man', to protest against the mean nonentity [Hitler]"
The conservative movement is rotten. Rotten to its rotten core.
Unrelated, but it conviently points out just how soulless this movement is -

LIMBAUGH: So you have the first Hispanic-American attorney general -- a minority -- under fire by white liberal racists in the Senate. I guarantee you that -- and he's not the first, by the way. We'll never forget what happened to Miguel Estrada. And that was just -- wife ended up committing suicide over what they did to him. It was horrible
*Given that statement, the neoconservative alliance with Dominionist like Tim LaHaye makes a lot more sense.
