    Now, I'm not so sure it comprises the full 30% of Bush's hard core of support, but it seems safe to say that it's a goodly portion of that 30%, and it deserves serious attention.

    Thanks for putting that into words for me.

    My father has been talking for years now about the people who remember Vietnam as something that was winnable. He knew they would be back again to say the same thing: "if we'd just stayed there, we could have won, so we're not going to make the same mistake in Iraq!" Their own, personal pride is implicated at this point. THEY become heroes if their country is "victorious." On the other hand, they are "losers" if their side "surrenders."

    People who can take war and make it personal in that particular wayare the ones who deserve serious attention, as you suggest.
