Poor Neville Chamberlain!
I love it! Bush, on the defensive, equals Churchill in the wilderness, or so historians will finally see some day, with the defeatist "Democrat" party in the role of Neville Chamberlain in the late 1930s. As Mr. Cheney puts it, "Hogwash!"
The only way that are not going to be condemned to repeat history is if we understand it. Let us look at England in the 1930s. Americans cannot understand the horror that Great Britain suffered in World War I. 2-3 million casualties among a population of some 80 million. Imagine the U.S. in a war where we suffer 7-8 million young men dead. We simply can't, because it didn't happen to us. Do we understand the financial devastation of the world-wide Depression in England? Far deeper and longer-lasting than in the U.S. Allies? Not the United States, caught up in our post-war isolation and trade barriers. France? The largest military power on the Continent, unwilling to stand up to German re-armament and aggression, huddled behind the Maginot Line. Russia? Even before the Non-Agression Pact a secret supporter of German re-armament. With the political realities at his disposal, and a strong anti-war sentiment at home, what could Chamberlain do? Well, what he did do was to work to create new, modern factories, without which the needed war production would have been impossible. His diplomacy failed, but did he really have any other choice?
No, no, no. George Bush will not be rescued by history. His is a failed Presidency, and his only legacy will be one of national shame, diplomatic defeat and crippling economic burdens left to us and our children.

"In times of universal deceit..."
"...telling the truth is a revolutionary act."
-- George Orwell
Just think what might happen if everyone given a mainstream media platform - such as General William Odom and Mr. Glenn Greenwald - told the truth. As Mr. Greenwald observes, the reality-defying arguments that are being used by those in power (and their blind-faith supporters) are easily put down. The only weapon needed is the truth.
My heartfelt thanks to Gen. Odom, Glenn Greenwald and others who have or who will step up to the mass media plate and commit the revolutionary act of telling the truth.
May this revolution catch fire and burn quickly.

O, you're talkin','bout taint smears. sorry.
It's after 12:00, yet?
I'm going down in the basement cellar to see if there is any good disinfectant to drink as a afternoon tea mood enhancer? I'm thirsy.
And Mr. Potter, You reminded me of the O.T. story of the potter-guy who threw all the false-sage cracked-pots and neocons of the day...he threw'um up against the shattering wall. The good potter re-fired the kiln and reshaped the cracked-pots. Then the pot held some water and tea. Then the pot got put to good usage. I know I got a good crock in the lover level. It's a good afternoon, one way, or try another? I need to get drinking hot tea or cool mead to feel more purified. I'll sip any two good thing with hearty lips. I'll label todays large glass beverage, 'Purified Intentions.'

It will soon be 12:noon.
Glenn, check out RhumbaGrrrll carefully before you agree to such request.
Albert had a secret admirer who said the same-same as RhumbaGrrrll. Einstein said, "Whoa, my luck, the offspring would have my looks and your brains."

Newsflash! Chruchill Admiited (and suffered for) Mistakes!
My favorite Neocon analogy is George Bush being a 'modern-day' Churchill, stoically and heorically holding out against unceasing criticism and incredible odds to hold out for what is moral and right.
The neos seem to forget all about Gallipoli (1915 thru 16) in WWI. Churchill's plan was to storm the entrance to the Dardanelles, force the surrender of Constantinople, thus relieving Russia, taking Turkey out of the war, and attacking Central Europe from the South.
A grim salughterhouse Gallipoli proved to be (and Turkey a tougher nut to crack than thought). Australian and NZ troops were pinned against cliffs and slaughtered wholesale. It was a total disaster.
Churchill took full responsibility, resigned and joined the Army, suffering politcally and personally (Gallipoli ALWAYS troubled him).
Even so, it wasn't really Churchill's fault--it was the Navy for bakcing off what could have been a successful forcing of the Straits after minimum effort, and Kitchener's for giving it half-hearted support in men and resources.
He FAILED. He took RESPONSIBILITY for OTHER's
MISTAKES. HE RESIGNED. HE JOINED THE ARMY.
Sound like George W. Bush to any one? NO?
Additionally, it was his idea to use the infamous 'Blacks and Tans' in Ireland 1919-22.
He was sure he could suppress the IRA militarily. HE FAILED. HE RESIGNED. Ireland became independent.
So, neos, let's talk Churchill, shall we?

Not taking the bait ...
Very informative post Glenn. It was especially good to see General Odom not take the bait presented by HH and instead deal with the realities of the whole sorry mess. The problem is of course that the true believers can't be made to change their minds, no matter how logical or credible the messenger is. Hence, comments after the article depicted General Odom as a freedom-hating, white-flag waving loon.
While I was there I decided to read a few other of HH's articles, and I don't know what is scarier. The positions he takes or the postings of his readers!
Apparently many, many people don't have any clue what our country is really all about and would instead prefer to live in a right-wing, wingnut, kill them all fantasy land. They're still arguing that the Democrats were responsible for the failure of Vietnam.
All in all very disheartening ...
