My GOP: Too old, too white to win

A Republican looks at the numbers and sees disaster ahead, unless his party figures out how to be less -- caucasian

Appealing to "real Americans" is also a form of identity politics.

And one which doesn't go unnoticed by those who fall outside the parameters defined by someone running for office who is using race and class as a wedge issue.

Very True - Republiscums are like cockroaches. If we don't keep our kitchens clean, they'll breed and overwhelm us.

Best to stock up on some Raid.

Black Vote!

There is not question that the mainstream media is responsible for the minorities voting for liberals. For years nearly every story on national politics -- and repeated sometimes daily-- either bashes the Republicans and how they treat minorities (completely false assertations) or praising the liberals for how great they "always" treat minorities.

Nothing but liberal rehtoric and lies. The Dems every election always tell the minorities they will give them the store. All free of charge. Housing, jobs, health insurance, etc., etc. You name it! The problem is...they never come through. If one really looks deep at the record and determines who has done what for minorities it really isn't any contest. Republicans, McCain and other leaders have fell flat in their campaign rehtoric getting their story out. They do not fight or give battle. Too docile. There was a lot of fodder to use against Obama and no one said a word. If it hand't been for the economic bust in the last few weeks of the campaign, the Republicans may have won. Palin had come in and given them the lead just before the economy went berserk. But, the blacks with their 97% vote and not voting their heads, gave it to Obama. Blacks generally are against abortion and gays. But they didn't vote that way. The media and Obama had them well trained with lies.

Democratic and Republican too Backwards

I think a better discussion is how both of our political parties are an anachronism. I dont care about what skin color, or sexual orientation you are. This is a very simplistic, and anti-intellectual argument. We should be talking about creating a third or fourth party which will serve the interests of all the people, irregardless of gender, race, sexual orientation. We need to think more progressively in this country. It is very apparent that the Democratic and Republican parties are one and the same, and overall serve the same entrenched interests which is keeping this country from progressing. If people in this country refuse to acknowledge and live in denial about this, true change will never occur. The Deomocratic party has for the past 30 years assimilated all the Reagan 80's platform, and now propagandizes itself as an alternative to the Republicans. This is really a conspiracy with the complicity and coordination of the Republicans to maintain this political hegemony, much like the PRI in Mexico used to maintain over 70 years of autocratic rule.

I would love to see:

'rational' or 'moderate' republicans like this face a decent interviewer who can probe into all the things omitted from these little insights into the party.

So who did laborers vote for?

Who did educated people vote for?

Who gave those black and brown people ghettos and preachers instead of libraries and contraceptives?

@jch555 - You're Full Of Shit

Sorry, asshole, but the GOP is indeed the party of racism and white supremacy from Nixon's infamous "Southern Strategy" to Lee Atwater's infamous Willie Horton ad to the distinguished racist careers of David Duke, Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, etc.

Don't blame the media for telling the TRUTH about the party of "Macaca".

Hell, Ken Mehlman even went so far as to apologize to blacks for the GOP's Southern Strategy.

Anyone who says the GOP isn't a racist party is either a liar or a fool. Which one are you?

Monday, July 20, 2009 12:43 PM

The headline of the article itself shows why the GOP is losing

The GOP cannot think of people as anything other than race or perhaps age. It's not your demographics that failed you, Bill, it's your ideas. The financial crisis of 2008 is the fruit of failed policies your party fought for 30 years to implement.

Get some new ideas.

@Giant Bastard

Could you give an example of something the Democrats have done or tried to do to enact positive change ? Everything I have seen would lead one to believe a different party has taken over.....but nothing has changed.

It's The Southern Strategy Striking Back

It's not just the racists. The Republican Party has become infested with religious fanatics and neo-con jingos and they've just about taken over. These people used to be on the Democrats' plantation, and the Democrats seemed to know how to keep them under control. Nixon took them on, the leadership apparently lost its grip, and now the Republicans are saddled with the likes of Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. The demographic is tending towards the trailer parks, and not the best sort of trailer parks, either.

Meanwhile, those who want conservatives vote Democrat.

Too frightened to win

Mr Greener omitted another aspect of his party's demographic failure: the so-called 'culture wars'. As long as his party remains the prisoner of the 'Family Values' people, it will continue to recede into irrelevance -- especially among the young.

The articulate kook Pat Buchanan first gave its title, but millions of Republicans have given it substance. These 'culture wars' are fought by people afraid of loud music, loud colors, and human relationships.

Case in point: gay marriage. Only 31% of respondents OVER age 40 (according to the NYT/CBS) support it. UNDER age 40? Some 57% support it. Do you not see a cultural trend here? It does not augur well for Republicans. One would expect better of a party that used to believe in 'live and let live'. Republicans have become a a congregation of voyeurs.

Case in point: Brokeback Mountain. This extraordinary film continues to resonate, to inform, to build an enduring bridge between gay and straight people. It serves our best selves. It stands for a poetry larger than ourselves. Many Republicans are simply too afraid to watch it for fear they might be changed by it.

Case in point: Adam Lambert. This dazzling entertainer launched his career declaring his homosexuality. Have you been to his concerts? Women young and old throw brassieres and more at him, and cougars want to have his children. The world of popular culture is changing significantly, and leaving Republicans behind, cowering and deaf. And afraid.

The party of 'Family Values' is chiefly good for laughter, and Mark Foley, Mark Sanford, John Ensign, Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard and oh so many others.

As long as you take spiritual guidance from Pat Robertson, cultural direction from Pat Buchanan, and policy direction from 'Dr' James Dobson, the world will pass you by and, in time, attend your funeral.

It's too bad. Good government requires a good opposition.
