My GOP: Too old, too white to win

A Republican looks at the numbers and sees disaster ahead, unless his party figures out how to be less -- caucasian

You're Wondering Now

You're wondering now,

What to do, now you know this is the end

You're wondering how,

You will pay, for the way you did behave

Curtain has fallen,

Now you're on your own

I won't return,

Forever you will wait

You're wondering now,

What to do, now you know this is the end

Curtain has fallen, now you're on your own

I won't return, forever you will wait

You're wondering now, what to do,

Now you know this is the end

You're wondering how, you will pay,

For the way you did behave

You're wondering now, what to do,

Now you know this is the end

You're wondering now, what to do,

Now you know this is the end.

Sinking Feeling

Along with the sinking promise of healthcare....is there really anything looking up for dems ? Screw up stimulus package...check, screw up bank bail out ....check, screw up healthcare.....check. This last example is particularly onerous given just weeks ago 3/4 of the country supported Obama's healthcare plan (yes, I know one didnt exist)....now that number is UNDER 50%. Yes, what a bright future our Democratic leaders are preparing for us all. Keep celebrating you intellectual giants !

Its not about identity politics

The unspoken assumption in this article is that if republicans weren't older, white males, minority voters would flock to the party. The reality is that identity politics have little to do with why republicans don't fare well among these voters.

The real reason is that the policies espoused by republicans are not in the best interests of these voters. Its not any more complicated than that. I really don't think that most voters (of any color) chose a candidate to vote for based on the color of his or her skin (or the candidate's sex). I think that voters choose based on policy and on a hard-to-define sense of trust in the candidate. I think race and sex are a distant third.

I think that your unspoken assumption is a form of unconscious racism. With people like you advising the republicans, the democrats can look forward to a permanent majority.

The Cause of the Current Trend in the Demise of Republican Party

Earlier in this decade, Republicans already showed ample indications of losing their leadership. Blaming the problem of the GOP's present demise simply because of their being too white or too old doesn't address a fundamental problem they have had. When the Democrats had controlled Congress in the late 1990s, the Republican House and Senate leadership had complained of lax ethics and sought to toughen the ethical conduct standards. After the Republicans became the majority in Congress, they sought to relax the ethical standards! Look next what happened to Congress after the first term of President George Bush: there were an increasing number of Democrats vs. Republicans elected to office. The loss of credibility of the Republican party has do with the lack of accountability of governement that has happened under their watch while they controlled both Congress and the Office of the President. An image that has made an impression on my mind is what I saw after Hurricane Katrina: the plight of so many residents (especially low to middle income peoples). Not only was the government (e.g. FEMA) seemingly slow in responding, but it was apparent that the need minimum preventative measures (like shoring up the dam/retain wall etc) had not been done preceding the hurricane. A sea change seemed to be begging to happen by whomever could provide the needed leadership. We don't want to just read lips and be paid lip service - we want to see action by way of better accountability of government.

@mikebuzz

Bullshit. I'm an independent and even I know that the Bush White House broke the law on FISA and DID approve torture.

Your assholish denial of these facts is one more reason we all hate Republicans now.

I agree with you Giant B, but it's not over yet for the ReThugs

Please die off soon, motherfuckers - nobody wants to hear your shit anymore!

LOL!!

I didn't reprint the rest of your post because people can look it up, but I agree with you 100%.

However, remember that if we have another 9/11 or the economy gets worse, a Republican can take the White House in 2012.

The thing is many racial minorities are social conservatives.

After all, the dissolution of the traditional family represents a far greater economic threat to their community than it does to upper middle class whites who are in a position, as Daniel Quayle famously put it, to "pull a Murphy Brown" and bear children out of wedlock.

But all that falls to the wayside when elected officials such as former California Governor Peter Wilson, and to a lesser extent former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, engage in immigrant bashing because it plays well with the white base. Inevitably, the person is discovered to have undocumented in his employ, "Oh, so we're good enough to clean your toilets and manicure your lawn, but not to live here???"

Ditto for gays. Those who've done well are a natural Republican constituency. They don't want to pay taxes for services they are never going to use. But gay bashing makes it impossible for them to support the GOP.

@h0tr0d

Hey, at least the Dems are trying to enact some kind of positive change... all the Republicans have to offer is... nothing. I would rather have a flawed party of change than a failed party of no. The GOP has nothing less to offer anybody.

nice try h0tr0d....

Two Words

Colin Powell. Couple that with the spending and deficits the Democrat will run up in the next couple of years, and you may want to re-run the demographics. Politics is about competence.....right now the repubs have none, but they don't need to, they're not in charge anymore. From what I see, the dems are already showing they are no different. That's sad.

-------------------------------

The US federal debt increased sharply in 2002, as did PRC purchases of US debt. A mere $5 trillion in debt in 2002, the GOP managed the fear-monger machine well enough to pay for a war on a credit card, rather than ask the country to sacrifice.

A war-time government and a peace-time economy. I guess it worked for a while. ALL the profits of the last 6 years were wiped out last year, and yet, bonuses are kept. The robber barons of the 21st century will be remembered like those of the 19th and 20th, cruel inhuman beings with no compassion or understanding of what makes a culture strong.

It is true that the Obama administration will run up the debt further. Spending the money on domestic needs seems far preferable to watching New Orleans drown while billions go to other countries for development and

're-construction'.

Was it S.Carolina that forced its governor to accept money so it didn't have to lay off school teachers? Or was it Bobby who tried to skate on ice with his speech, talking about responsible government, while Bush gave Wall Street $800 billion with no strings attached and everyone was told that everything will be okay? When the well of ineptitude is so deep, it is hard to imagine anyone supporting the GOP.
