I posted this comment after the last election. Nice to think someone else thinks it relevant:
If the hard right wants the GOP to remain the party of the come to jesus angry white man, well so be it. Liberals want you to do that as well!
Last election the GOP became the party of the old, undereducated, rural angry white voter. This group is becoming a smaller and smaller percentage of the electorate. It became the party of the Southern core of the Confederacy and states like Wyoming where nobody lives. It lost in every major metropolitan area. It lost Ohio, N.C., Pennsylvania and Florida. It lost affluent diverse suburbs in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Raleigh, Fairfax and Northern Virginia, Alburquerque and Las Vegas, Miami and Tampa, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Indianapolis, San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Boston . It even lost Dallas and Houston.
It lost Hispanic voters by 2 to l. It lost virtually 100% of the black vote. It lost the "youth" vote 2 to 1. The Democrats won every growing demographic.
There is no longer a GOP Representative in the House from all of New England, including those bastions of Republicanism, New Hampshire and Maine. There are only 3 GOP House members from New York and only one is urban. The increasing Hispanic vote will put Texas and Arizona in play in coming elections. Any party that starts with California, New York and Texas in its column is in a pretty strong position.
TV Cameras had a hard time finding a black face at the GOP convention. Bigots routinely talked to video cameras while in line and waiting outside.
The GOP needs to decide what it is FOR......calling the opposition names ain't gonna cut it as "policy". Being for “family” and “America” ain’t gonna cut it as policy. Calling the Dems “traitors” and marxists, rhetoric not heard in 50 years, revealed the dearth of GOP ideas.
Continuing down the same path will lead to a smaller, waiting for the rapture, lily-white regional Southern party.
Look at the faces of the new America........the demographics are against you. :-)
Nice to have you back. You seem quite refreshed and, dare I say, less paranoid now? I mean, you’ve decided to come out of anonymity and actually seem slightly less delusional.
That’s a nice start. Maybe a couple more months off and you’ll get a clue about what you REALLY need to do to get out of the ditch your guys dug. Feel free to take the time off. Whatever you were doing around here, we don't need it anymore.
It's called rat poison.
Drink up, you motherfucking Republican rats.
The sooner you dumbfucks all die off, the sooner we can fix your goddamn messes.
Assholes!
That would be all well and good, if today's GOP actually STOOD for those values. They do not. They give it lip service only, which is why most people are disgusted with them (weakness and flaws are very forgivable -- hypocrisy is not). When one looks at every single one of those virtues you mentioned, one can very easily give multiple examples as to how the GOP has egregiously violated those virtues. Just to give two examples, it is laughable for you to pretend that the GOP stands for the rule of law, when it was cheerleading torture, as well as warrantless wiretapping of American citizens. (Things that we dirty leftist hippies were loudly criticizing, for which we were called traitors.) And it is also laughable for you to pretend that the GOP stands for traditional social values, when every month appears to bring a new case of a GOP member screwing around on his wife in spectacular, train-wreck-ish fashion.
You can appreciate those aforementioned virtues all you want, and the GOP might continue to fly the flag for them. However, if you think that the GOP is doing anything other than flying a flag, you're deluding yourself. Talk is cheap, and fortunately for the GOP, you appear to be easily bought.
RedKitten,
Too true that today’s GOP often fails at living up to these principles, which is one very good reason for purging the “moderates” responsible for much of the GOP’s hypocrisy when it comes to limited government and respect for private enterprise. What I would dearly love to see is a party that clearly and defiantly stands for the ideals I outlined and brooks no compromise. I admit that the chances of that happening, however, are very small.
You do betray your lefty pedigree with your allusion to “torture” and “warrantless wiretapping,” both of which you just automatically assume proves your point about violating the rule of law, though the “illegality” of either of these is highly doubtful, and it certainly was at the time they were undertaken.
You are also really hung up on sex as some kind of all-purpose ad hominem rebuttal. Just how does a politician “screwing around on his wife” delegitimize his opposition to abortion, say, or invalidate his insistence that children are best raised in stable two-parent families? Were Jefferson’s words about all men being created equal any less true or less legitimate because he was a slaveholder?
I would say that when it comes to being “easily bought” you are quite a bargain. You swallow the most facile slogans of your political tribe and dribble them out as all-purpose arguments
The Republican plan for diversity and appeal to minorities is a massive gubmint-sponsored fertility drug program for pre-selected parents of people like Ron Christie and Alberto Gonzales.
As greener pointed out, they do understand the problem. They all keep mentioning Miguel Estrada (newly-minted sophisticated Republican version of “some of my best friends are….") and NONE of them actually called the judge a “Spic” or “Taco Nigger” in public.
What more do you people want?
they need to get serious about civil rights, they need to restructure their entire approach to the economy so it helps lower income and lower middle class voters and they need to toss the racists overboard....in other words, they have to stop beig republicans......as the suburbs integrate, not only do the minorities not become republicans, their neighbors start shifting to the democratic side
look, the gop only has a lock on two demos at this point...whites without college degrees [and they are losing them in the midwest] and whites in the south and the mormon triangle....
i think the number that matters is the electoral college count in florida....the gop can't even dream of getting to 270 without it...and look at the exit polls...mccain did the same as bush did with white voters [as that group shrinks] and the hispanics totally flipped....if the party can't fix that one state...they're cooked
