Christopher Hitchens writes "I wonder sometimes whether the Nixon tapes really will just continue to be the gift that never stops giving. I was in college when Richard Milhous Nixon was first elected president, and I can still remember the profound sense of loathing and disgust that I experienced at the mere sight, let alone the sound, of him and of his most especially repellent sidekick Henry Kissinger. Wiser and older people tell you that the passions of your youth will dry up and that a more sere and autumnal condition will overtake you as maturity advances, but the thought of the Nixon gang in the White House still infuses me with a pure and undiluted hatred and makes me consider throwing up things that I don't even remember having eaten."

As if having Camille Paglia inflicted on us were not enough -- now you guys publish a writer who openly admits he's a nut. As if we wouldn't have figured that out for ourselves...
Please please please, Salon, stop bending over backward so you can get screwed up the butt by these guys. Every time I come to this site, I am grateful grateful grateful I stopped giving you money, and I resolve I will never give you money again. The ACLU gets my bucks. Anyone standing up for the rights of the GLBT community gets my bucks. Doctors Without Borders gets my bucks. Anyone standing up for the rights of women to make their own reproductive choices gets my bucks. I might even send money to the failing NY Times. But Salon? Why why why would I do that to myself?
What part of this is Salon missing? Hello! Wake up! You compete in a tight market for dollars for which many, many people who offer more important services are clamoring!
Why is this guy here? Because National Review Online is about to fold? That is what is known as a clue.
Well as I'm guessing a neo-statist ie statist lite ("moderate Republican") wingnut does make a valid point.
The outraged reaction however is hilarious: since this is a liberal site I would suggest that if you want to find out what conservative philosophy is read the federalist/anti-federalist papers and for libertarian The Road to Serfdom by Hayeck for some of the posters.
The modern day practice of legislating social/moral issues from the bench by liberals see Roe v. Wade, Bowers v Texas, the now overturned Ricci decision pretty much sums up the conservative / liberal divide no different then Priggs v Pennslyvania, Dred Scott and Plessy v Ferguson in the past.
To most Americans "How" is more important then "What/Why" if you want gay marriage and do it like Vermont / New Hampshire then fine you win. Do it like the other four states and what used to be in California and you get Prop. 8.
So nowadays it is arguably how close to the US Constitution you adhere too and how much that you are willing to let the gov't ignore if you win that determines where you fall on the spectrum if using a 1D or even 2D line/graph.
And I'd say with the exception of the far left nobody at the rank and file level rejects it entirely although some might wish certain aspects of it not to exist.
Depending on your age it has been a long time since the Fed has abided by that document (probably before you were born) which is why I find it puzzlingly liberals want the Fed to have more power.
It is truly amazing that the self named conservatives, think that just by saying so, it must be true. If ‘we’ speak it, it must be true. Sounds like the last 8 years of the tales told by idiots. Consequently any one side of any debate about Family Values, gays, Bill Clinton, etc. promulgated by the conservatives, IS true. There is no debate allowed by conservatives. And if you do even offer a debate, there is nothing but anger and ridicule spewed back.
Funny that those who do not label themselves as conservatives, (75% of the population) do not get caught up in the unending spiral. Let us not forget though the impact of repetition. The last 8 years the last administration drummed countless dribble it into the heads of the masses, and it worked.
So be afraid, be very afraid of the ‘conservatives’ repeating over and over that "conservatives believe it skews to the right"
