It is summer 2009, and John McCain is president

In which the author imagines what America would be like if the GOP's man had won. Critics of Obama, take note.

The letters thread is now closed.

What if you put down that crack pipe?

McCain wasn't even a real candidate and it certainly wasn't a real election and Obama certainly carrying on the policies of the previous administration.

The only way you are going to convince us is to get us to smoke what is in YOUR pipe and that isn't going to happen, fool.

John McCain President? That's just CRAZY talk.

Someone must have spiked the Republican Convention with acid, shrooms and ambien.

the important point is that

the empire wallows on, incapable of significant policy changes because special interest groups rule america.

that is the power of democracy: that it allows the majority to have it's way about national policy. a nation without citizen initiative is frozen in the war of the american roses, with the people helpless to defend themselves from the rich, the generals, the politicians, the corporations.

president mccain? no big difference, just speeds up the rush to oblivion.

You forgot something...

A McCain presidency would not just have the shear brilliance and widely renowned equanimity of John McCain to rely on. His emissary, vice-president Palin, would be out there putting her two-cents in as well!

Slow day? You must have just emailed this tripe in to meet a contractual agreement.

Hasty editing makes waste

I doubt either Obama or McCain could be deferent to anything, but they just might be deferential.

Monday, June 15, 2009 07:01 PM

You left out the scariest part --

--Sarah Palin would be vice president.

Monday, June 15, 2009 07:17 PM

Sotomayor

And it is not very likely that McCain would be nominating Sonia Sotomayor. Obviously it is uncertain what type of congress he would have, but at the very least, with a democratic controlled contgress, a big Bork fight would be in the making.

Let me guess

If McCain were President, the inaugural invocation would have been given by a fundamentalist preacher, the US would still be in Iraq and increasing its presence in Afghanistan, Washington would still be giving billions to the banks, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" would still be in effect, the Department of Justice would be arguing that the Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional, Robert Gates would still be Defence Secretary, the White House would be fighting to keep photos of US torture in Iraq secret...

Scary!

White Trash and Simpletons

Republicans, who at their best were the wise old owls of the "greatest generation" have disintegrated into little more than white trash and simpletons of post modern America in its declining years...

McCain is the last gasp of the old style republicans, but not the best of the old style republican leaders.

Thank God things worked out the way they have.

really. mccai president. wild fantasy.

why not speculate about the realistic alternative; a hillary clinton presidency?

Monday, June 15, 2009 08:32 PM

McCain wouldn't be president now

Sarah Palin would have poisoned his metamucil by March. We would be living under the Palin/Wurzelbacher administration. David Souter wouldn't be retiring, but Scalia might have. If so, she probably would have nominated John Ashcroft, or perhaps Todd Palin. Bristol would have married and divorced Levi by now, and probably be knocked up by one of her secret service agents, she wouldn't be sure of which one of course.

Fast track to theocracy

One things for sure, James Dobson would have begun construction on the gay death camps by now. Let's face it, if the American people would have put a republican in power after eight years of Bush, they would have put up with anything.

navyguy is a brilliant political analyst who should be on the payroll of

newsweek and msnbc.

And though Lind is right that McCain would be worse, it doesn't excuse Obama from reversing on his campaign promises to give us fiscally responsible reform and financial regulation. What he's done so far on the economy is frightening.

Cue the Neo-Nadirites

Here they come. Obama=Bush. And Gore=Bush worked out so well for everybody.

My dear Santos L. Halper,

So, how many young ladies did Bush send on a foolish mission to provoke, spy upon and get caught by the North Koreans in order to foment a word crisis? How many years are they going to be guests of North Korea?

What was Al Gore thinking?

Lucky he didn't bring such thinking to the White House.

Which party is Joe Lieberman in and exactly how is he any better than Cheney?

Joe Biden? Well, at least he jokes about the tele prompter.

How many have been killed by Obama over the same proven LIES of the previous administration which he intends to consider as TRUTHS when everyone knows that they are LIES?

Change?

Right.

Michael Lind,

Following your footsteps, I decided to speculate how much the John McCain’s inauguration would have cost relative to the cost of Barack Obama’s inauguration.

So I started a little research on this subject. All I could find was the predicted cost of Obama’s coming inauguration and how it would have compared with the real cost of Bush’s inauguration.

1) “The country is in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, which isn't stopping rich donors and the government from spending $170 million, or more, on the inauguration of Barack Obama.”

http://abcnews.go.com/business/inauguration/story?id=6665946&page=1

2) “Did you hear that "some are saying" Barack Obama's inauguration will cost "$160 million," which is $100 million more than George W. Bush's last swearing-in? That's the tale the crew at Fox & Friends was telling on January 15. "Why does the thing have to cost so much?" demanded co-host Gretchen Carlson. "I don't get it. George Bush spent $42.3 million and that was just four years ago." She wondered why Obama needed "another $100 million" for his celebration.”

“You read that correctly. The federal government spent $115 million dollars for the 2005 inauguration. Keep in mind, that $115 million price tag was separate from the money Bush backers bundled to put on the inauguration festivities. For that, they raised $42 million. So the bottom line for Bush's 2005 inauguration, including the cost of security? That's right, $157 million.

Unless the Obama inauguration tab (including security) ends up costing $630 million, we can safely say it certainly won't cost four times what the Bush bash did in 2005. And unless the Obama inauguration tab (including security) runs to $257 million, we can safely say the event won't cost $100 million more than Bush's, as Fox & Friends claimed.

So, for now, can the press and partisans please stop peddling this malignant myth?”

http://mediamatters.org/columns/200901170003

3) “It's possible that the security costs could end up being higher. Roughly 400,000 people attended George Bush's 2005 inaugural festivities, according to estimates at the time. CNN estimates that 1.5 million attended the 2009 version, and other estimates range from over 1 million to 1.8 million.

All the bills for Obama's event won't be in for several more weeks, but it appears likely that his inauguration will not cost significantly more than Bush's second inauguration, and could conceivably cost less after adjusting for inflation.”

I have to confess that I could not find any source, which would provide me with information regarding the cost of Obama’s inauguration. Is it supposed to be released to the public? Can anybody help me?
