Get over your Obama Derangement Syndrome

My fellow right-wingers, calm down. The new president is not the antichrist, Stalin or even a radical.

The letters thread is now closed.

Keep telling yourself this:

It is true that Obama has shown surprising ineptitude in his first months in office

Tell yourself that every night David, as Obama fixes yet another Bush-aggravated or created problem after problem. He's been remarkably effective and we're only 70 days in.

Horowitz convenient amnesia

Let's leave that kind of behavior to the liberals who invented it.

Oh Dave, where were you when the right had a cottage industry with the evils of the Clinton Administration? How they assassinated Vince Foster, sabotaged Ron Brown's plane, and had a secret Arkansas Mafia out there knocking off political rivals. For the eight years Bill Clinton was in office he was the most evil man to walk the face of the earth to this crowd and they still haven't gotten over it. All they've managed to do is repackage the same paranoid conspiracies with Obama's face on the box.

smells false

I sense an ulterior motive. Conservatism is imploding and their hysteria makes the conservatives look silly, speeding that implosion. Horowitz' making nice smells false, he's trying to save his movement.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:13 PM

Gotta give Horowitz credit for this at least...

Brave man, posting here on Salon, where he'll get his ass handed to him.

But now they love that don't they. Keeps the name in print.

Guess it's some sort of narcissism, eh Davey?

It's more along the lines of Democrat Derangement Syndrome

It wouldn't matter which democrat own, we would still be hearing the "next Hitler" line. Remember the Clinton years? Menawhile these people completley ignore that thousands of conservatives, literally, beleived that Bush was "appointed by God". Liberals invented hysteria? Tell me, when is Clinton finally going to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine? Any day now, right? Ha! Ha!

Sorry David

but this leftie is not apologizing. I'm concerned about where Obama is going in Iraq and particularly Afghanistan, but I also understand he is trying to deal with the utter disaster left him by, yes, that idiot, yes, that fascist, GWB.

And yes, your fellow right wingers are deranged.

April's fools joke

This attempt at even handedness is a joke, isn't it?

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:32 PM

Ineptitute?

It would have been great if the author had given examples of Obama's "surprising ineptitude". That would require real thinking however.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:33 PM

False equivalency, David.

The left didn't start calling Bush a Nazi until after he had authorized torture, warrantless wiretapping, arbitrary firing of prosecutors who wouldn't use prosecutions to pursue Republican political goals, and a great many other intolerable abuses of his office and violations the Constitution and the rule of law. Republicans, on the other hand, started hyperventilating about how Obama was Hitler, Stalin, Robert Mugabe and the Antichrist the day he won the election.

Now that he has clearly demonstrated that he is no loony radical but a centrist taking a cautious approach toward cleaning up the disastrous mess left to him, you can at least recognize that the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck are giving the Republican party a terrible black eye with sane Americans. But face it, Horowitz, you really haven't changed since your Black-Panther-Fellow-Traveler days. All that's really changed is the nature of your hysterical rhetoric.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:35 PM

what rubbish

<<But in doing this you fall into the "Bush-is-an-idiot" bag of liberal miasmas>>

But Bush WAS an idiot.

Indeed, as it turns out, he was just about everything we liberals said he was. But I don't recall a single one of us weeping into the cameras a la Glenn Beck and threatening armed insurrection. And Bush suspended habeas corpus, tapped our phones, started wars that killed hundreds of thousands of people, tortured and left the country broke and in pieces! Obama just wants to give you health insurance, with dental, and save your jobs, and you are reaching for your guns, completely hysterical. What a bunch of babies.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:36 PM

Thanks for the giggles

Because it is HILARIOUS that someone who supported eight years of the bi-polar retarded/sadistic Bush regime wrote an article about the 'failures' of Obama's two-month presidency.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:37 PM

But there really was no "Bush is Hitler" crowd...

Your entire premise is false.

I was as vehemently opposed to George W. Bush as anyone, from day one.

My opposition was based on FACTS ABOUT WHAT HE WAS DOING, not false accusations or analogies.

His administration indulged in tax cuts that I perceived as irresponsible, science denial as perceived by almost all scientists and scientifically educated people, unjustified war (in violation of international law and to the extreme detriment of the US service personnel, and to the detriment of national security in my opinion), promotion of torture, and a host of other objectively verifiable and often overtly stated activities to which I was opposed.

In contrast, it is ludicrous in the extreme to compare Barrack Obama to figures like Stalin, or to refer to the extremely centrist and status quo-respecting Obama as a "communist".

Actually, your premise is not "false", so much as "a ruse".

You recognize that ludicrous attacks on President Obama are damaging the already low popularity of your right wing party, and you're desperately trying to spin these tirades, which are nearly ubiquitous among conservatives, as the "actions of a few bad apples".

April Fool's

This has to be an April Fool's prank, right? Please tell me it is. Liberals invented hysterical responses which demonize the opponent instead of deal with the substance? This coming from the man who, on April 9, 2003, wrote: "We have entered the era of a new civil war between the forces of freedom and the powers of Islamo-fascist and communist darkness, and once again the left is clearly determined to take its stand on the other side."

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:54 PM

What's Joan Walsh smoking for April Fool's??

What a joke!

"...which distinctly reminds me of the "Bush is Hitler" crowd on the left.

Speaking of this crowd, have you seen any "I am so sorry" postings from that quarter as Obama continues and even escalates the former president's war policy in Afghanistan and attempts to consolidate his military occupation of Iraq?"

Why would these people apologize? Obama continuing Bush's policies doesn't mean Bush was right... It means Obama is Hitler, too.

"the Democrats are now a socialist party in the European sense"

Oh they are, are they???? Name 3.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 06:58 PM

"There isn't a conservative left who will vote Democratic in the next election"

OMG, conservatives are going to withhold their votes? How'd that work out for you last November Dave?

I suppose your side could be more irrelevant and impotent but I really can't see how.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 07:07 PM

Interesting...

That was a page full of backhanded compliments...

In essence, Horowitz is trying to put Obama in the same catagory as Bush by showing all of his generalized comparisons.

Comparisons that really don't hold any water, unless you look at them through partisan glasses.

I don't know if that is a good thing, or a bad thing.
