  • Pernicious

What a load of Zionist crap. Slaughtering peoples in a land occupied by your government isn't war, but rather a war crime.

    What next? nuclear weapons?

  • @Chris Sinnard

Chris, your crying about the consequences of Israel's actions being visiting on the USA by groups of scumbag terrorists is indeed cowardice.

  • Renegade Iconoclast

    Of course I care.

    Bullshit.

Just as, when I was in school, and I saw a bully picking on someone, I cared about my nose. I truly regret the times I cared more about my nose than the person being beat on, however.

Is this supposed to be some kind of proper analogy to support unflinching, 100% US support for all things Israel? A more appropriate metaphor would be to say you saw a bully beating up on some puny kid, and so you bought the bully brass knuckles, gave it millions of dollars of other people's money to spend on more brass knuckles, and then covered for the bully when called to the Principle's office to explain the situation (UN Vetos). When the puny kid's estranged brothers come and beat your ass for it, not really caring about their puny brother but merely looking for an excuse to fight, which you gave them by your support of the bully, you sit there saying "what did I ever do to them? They must hate me for my good looks and my riches."

did the Jewish population of Europe, when seeking a refuge and a county of their own, have to choose Jerusalem? Wasn't that asking for trouble?

  • JonathanInTelAviv

Chris, your crying about the consequences of Israel's actions being visiting on the USA by groups of scumbag terrorists is indeed cowardice.

More sticks and stones from the Zionist PR regurgitator. I'd rather be thought of as a coward by anti-American Zionists such as JonathanInTelAviv than sacrifice a single American life or spend a single American dime supporting Zionism.

Like I said, save your talking point propaganda for those it can affect.

  • Spin posing as analysis

Mr. Benn's article approaches this conflict as if it were an academic issue, ahistorical in approach. Hamas was elected overwhelmingly in Gaza not because of "Arab extremism" but because of the occupation and economic embargo. Its continued settlements in Palestinian territory and the subsequent disenfranchisement of their people and walling off of their territory into small enclaves that are both economically and socially unviable have resulted in Palestinian radicalization. The problem is that the Israel government and its oft rogue military still hasn't learned the basic lessons of responsible nationhood: that you must win the peace in order to win the war. Perhaps to Mr. Benn violence as a first resort is acceptable under the lens of extreme nationalism and tribalism and one can even argue that a country founded on terrorism as Israel was is still too young to understand what is necessary for its long-term survival. The Likudniks and their radical agenda have created a situation that will come back to haunt all Israelis--the majority, of whom, are moderate but who find themselves under an extremist government due to the coalitions formed under their parliamentary system. This action into Gaza may make some Israels feel good about themselves, despite the civilian deaths and casualties they cause, but they are alienating allies. Israeli interests do not automatically equate to U.S. interests. All of the political pandering here in the U.S. will have little sway should Israel come off as just being another nation under the rule of a religious sect murdering civilians, including children, under the banner of its cause based in self-justifying tribalism and superstition.

  • Renegade Iconoclast..

Yes, you're right, we should give in to all of Osama's demands while we're at it! Perfect plan, why didn't I think of it?

Let's see, we got our troops out of Saudi, like ObL wanted and we engaged in two fruitless and disastrous wars, again like ObL wanted..

Seems to me that we pretty much got lead around by the nose.

  • If Israel vanished today at 4pm eastern

and left only a pile of gold and unicorns made out of pot, in its wake, Salon would complain that their failure to leave it all in neat piles is a war crime that's inscrutably bent on oppressing the poor poor Palestinians. You can't argue with bigots, you can't point out they are bigots and you can't shame them into not being bigots. That's the nature of bigotry. Israel left Gaza 3 years ago and gave them approximately 6,800 chances (the number of rockets and mortars fired into Israel since) to kiss and make up. Not only that but the Hamas shelled the very powerplant that Israel uses to deliver 65% of the electricity to Gaza, for free and then whines that it's a war crime when the lights go out because they damaged the very same power plant.

In the meantime Hamas has murdered hundreds of their fellow Palestinians in back alley political violence and plain old thuggery. Salon is just pissed off that they didn't manage to kill more Jews. Again, that's the nature of bigotry.

So have at it, bigots. You are irredeemable.

  • A better question...

...is why so many "progressives" feel that Israel doesn't have a right to defend itself from Hamas attacks. They seem to think that since the rockets don't kill a lot of people, Israel should simply ignore them and give Hamas whatever it wants to make them stop shooting. They think of Israel as the aggressor, even though Israel has been attacked more often than pretty much any nation in history. Any defense of Israel's methods seems to result in charges that the defender is a "Zionist" who is unaware of history and cannot recognize that Israel has flaws. It's frustrating to read the vicious, one-sided attacks on Israel that generally come whenever they take action against the people who are attacking them.

Can't argue with you there. Funny how if I suggest any support at all for Israel, I'm suddenly expected to support the Bush administration.
