Why Israelis support the Gaza offensive

Israel's post-traumatic war is not just about stopping Hamas rockets, but about repairing reputations -- and erasing the stain of failure.

@ dick dworkin -- Israel exists. Israel is a recognized sovereign nation ... regardless of the simplistic "solutions" and analysis so often offered -- no, no, they can't take that away ...

The initial granting by the British of the land to the formation of the nation of Israel is easily considered -- hindsight 20/20 -- a mistake ... but even back in the late 1960's when any number of "leftists" suddenly seemed to realize that Israel was the bastard child of a dying (British) empire and part of the legacy of plain old-fashioned colonialism (in an age of neo-colonialism.

Much as I believe the Palestinians deserve restitution, yada yaday, etc., should Barack Obama himself, should the UN declare, Israel to be somehow null-and-void, there is the reality of Israel to contend with.

I grow weary of all the ancient history, but many, even most of the European Jews who settled Israel AFTER WWII were destitute and in need of a safe place to live. While some number probably were long time Zionists, some were not. Many had little connection with the pre-WWII Zionist movement as I understand it.

Whether or not you or I believe that Israel has a "right to exist" or even, as some Arab extremists would put it, whether Israel "exists", in fact, the nation state of Israel and the people who call themselves Israelis exist ... regardless of how cavalierly American liberals and other declare them to be "unfeasible" ...

I don't see Israel as doomed... I will place respohsibility for Israel's future in the hands of the Israelis. I don't know what will happend.

I deplore the current violence ... but, in all honesty, I suspect it will be just dusty another footnote, like Jenin. I don't approve of this action. I see no "victory" for anyone. It's like one of those chess "set piece" gambits... I will watch what happens.
