Guns and bombs in booming India

Amid calls for a fierce crackdown on "potential terrorists," Indians strive to define the Mumbai attackers as "the other."

Hey,what do you want and for who all?

Are these Hotels, one a century old and the other several decades of solid standing both in quality and courtesy dens of sin and deprivation that deliberately affront one community or faith. Is the fall of such outstanding edifices proof for the glory of God and establishes a faith to dread and hold in awe?How mindless and insane can one get and be driven to commit acts of destruction of life and property to knock on the gates of heaven and be treated to after life five star goodies. The brain washing and cleansing must have been so effective that 10 youths were drawn into and driven with passionate hate to hold the city to ransom for over 60 hours.

Politicians can use their fingers to point any which way they want and even ritually sacrifice a colleague or two just to draw the curtain. The need of the hour is rooting out for ever and decidedly the centers that nurture, cultivate and grow the ideas of terror and its practice.

I am sure actions might cause some grief, though unintended to some, but prove efficient in the longer haul. The youth must be sheltered from religious indoctrinations and taught humanism more than any ism.

Bombay has been pushed to the wall by local goons and terrorists now.People should come together as one humanity and put an end to any and all disturbances supported by well trained, equiped, vigilant and intelligent law enforcers.

This Is A Time For India To Be Still

Why has this campaign happened in India? What is the Motive? Who is behind this? Should the Government react without specific information? Are these Terrorist?

We knpw that someone or some group wanted this to happen, thus the situation. Cool heads should prevail. Not a knee jerk reaction like the Bush Admin displayed by attacking Iraq, a nation with no proven involvement in 911.

India should begin to repair its damaged facilities while investigating the causes.

Editors, please Star GS_Chandy's letter

Very well written.

The objective of the terrorists of Mumbai, and terrorists everywhere is to intimidate and polarize populations within the target country.

India was the victim of a talented and pitiless attack. An attack that recognized and exploited faulty ideas about security. Had those terrorists attempted to drive up to the Taj Mahal Hotel in a car, they probably would have been searched and thwarted. By motoring up in boats, and walking into the lobby dressed as guests (who frequently carry large bags) they slipped right through security.

India obviously has to do some thinking about such attitudes. Just as America modified its attitudes toward hijacking in the aftermath of 9/11. Never again will airline passengers sit passively, trusting hijackers to land and negotiate sensibly. We learned the hard way on that one.

India has also learned a hard lesson about security. Attackers may not appear wearing turbans, ragged beards, and shouting incoherent slogans. They will not announce their attacks by shooting into the air or carry signs condemning Jews, infidels, or Hindus.

They may stroll up wearing Versace designer gear with typical tourist luggage. They may appear to be chatting, or texting on their Blackberries, or even listening to iPods. They may smile and be polite.

Then they'll take their weapons out of their roll-on bags and start shooting. Or something else they think of next time. Perhaps a fake musical group, carrying weapons instead of instruments?

India is going to have to start thinking about when, where and how they can be attacked, and reform their police and intelligence gathering to make such attacks more difficult. No question.

However, reacting with fear and hatred will not end such attacks. It is very unlikely that there was a large number of people, other than the now-dead attackers, who knew these attacks were coming or how they would take place. Such things are not shared with the populations of even the most disaffected minority groups. These attacks are perpetrated by small groups who work secretly and separately. They will not be ended by targeting whole minority populations for revenge and oppression.

Welcome to the First World, India. You are becoming a target for envy and hatred. Your challenge is to manage the threats without losing the very freedoms and development that lead to your success.

I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope you won't bankrupt your economy overreacting like we did in the United States.

Godspeed.

When someone is willing to die......

When a Person (no, and Animal) is willing - and highly determined - to die, and kill as many as possible in the process; there really is no way to stop them.

Not an 'Indian Patriot Act', not better Intelligence, and - most importantly - not then kinds of Hindu on Muslim Terrorism that I noticed you failed to even mention in this piece.

It's all Hatered - nigh Racism, when you fail to be fair to the 'other'; and hatered begets hatered, violence begets violence, world will end.

India has too much to be proud of - why you've even launched Hypersonic Scramjet that made it to Mach 6.something, which isthe first step towards harvesting the Bounty of the Moon, which your mapping.

Pakistan has it's Suf Majority (Mast Qalandar!) - who staunchlyu oppose such Violence; and no more Taliban-loving Border War bragging about Pervez Musharif!

Don't give these Stupid Peasants - or the Crazy Mullahs who warp their minds - what they want; YOUR HATE!

You can do it, India; be better than the Idiots here in my country (the U.S.); look to the Buddha - to Gandhi - for Guidance in this Hard Time.

Peace be with you all.

An interesting perspective

I had a conversation with a young Indian woman in Canada the other day. She told me that because the US and Britain were so well protected, terrorists had to strike them elsewhere, and that Indians were dying because of it. She saw the deaths in Mumbai as collateral damage in the terrorists' attempt to kill Americans and Brits. The woman who told me this is bright, well-educated, and has a good job.

I wonder if this view is held by other Indians?
