You're kidding right? Right? You're solution to preventing more terrorist attacks is rendition and torture at Gitmo? You either have no soul, are incapable of learning from the US of A's mistakes, or think eye for an eye retribution is a sustainable and moral practice. Do I need to actually quote Ghandi on this? Ok I'll give you three (what should be) self-evident truths from one of the greatest human beings to ever walk the earth:
"An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind. "
"I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent."
"Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment."
Einstein said that 50 years after Ghandi's death people would be in awe that such a man ever walked the earth. I for one agree and am in awe. I'm an atheist but I for one pray that the faith based communities (be they Christian, Muslim, whatever . . .) will produce a priest/minister/imam/mullah who has half the capacity for empathy, peace, and understanding of the human condition that Ghandi did. Maybe he or she can lead the small subset of people of doctrinal or moral certainty, who believe violence is a justifiable means to an end, from the darkness of ignorance and moral intolerance into the light of wisdom and forgiveness so we can get on with creating a more just world. I don't have much faith at the moment, but I'm hopeful. My humble opinion is the faith based community will either lead or wither on the vine as morally irrelevant institutions so long as they condone violence of any stripe. I've certainly never needed faith in God to appreciate that violence and killing are wrong and that retribution isn't a solution.
A "Patriot Act" won't fix Indian security problems, any more than it fixed ours. Let's hope cooler heads prevail.
9/11 happened, despite the Bush Administration's long campaign to cover up the truth, because he and his were asleep at the wheel. Ashcroft's FBI, busy chasing doctors who assisted Oregon suicides or Californians providing medical marijuan to AIDS sufferers didn't listen when field agents alerted D.C. that young Arab men in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota were paying cash and taking airliner flying lessons, but not were interested in takeoffs and landings. The CIA did not listen when German, French, British, Egyptian, Israeli, Russian and other intelligence services warned that an attack on the U.S. was imminent. Their collective "defense" strategy and airport precaustions ignored the al Qaida-planned takeover of international flights originating in the Philippines a few years before 9/11. They allowed airport security to be contracted out with nonexisitant oversight to those corporations with the best lobbyists whose profiteering-driven hiring practices insured security breaches. When it was over with, the Senate Intelligence Committee's Pat Roberts could oversee an analysis that studiously avoided placing the blame where it belonged, and a 9/11 commission refused to demand straight answers from an obstructive, mendacious Condi Rice and other irresponsible officials.
Since 9/11 we have let Bush and Cheney engage in an enormous Pyrric charade that x-rays see-through plastic belts and seizes tiny amounts of toothpaste and shampoo from the bags of octogenarian travelers. At the same time, Cheney son-in-law Matthew Perry successfully lobbies to keep chemical plants from having to install even minimal protections that might avert terrorist-initiated Bhopal-scale disasters.
Should Indian follow Bush's lead, squandering trillions and shredding constitutional rights? I hope to hell it doesn't.
Well said.
It is more surprising because india is a practising democracy and a republic.
The Motherfuckers had a very good opportunity and have opportunity to express their feelings and choices in election, We had examples where long-term politicians have been defeated cruelly.
Instead these motherfuckers chose to gun down hundreds of innocents with absolute no regard to who they killed or not.
Each one of these guys AND their promotors should be renditioned to Gitmo and the waterboarded 8 times a day. At the end of 5 years they should be castrated while conscious.
Bush was right in opening Gitmo.
These so-called-terrorists do NOT deserve the due process of law the cushioned Federal or State prison where they can watch TV, listen to radio and dig up dirt.
For these guys, there exist Gitmo.
KEEP GITMO OPEN!
"That being said, Deeply Imbedded should understand that the way this attack was done is likely what is causing the reaction - as it was mentioned (in the article, I think), this attack was not a bomb in a garbage can, it was an invasion that caught the police and defense personnel with their pants down."
That is, in fact, the reason. At some point, many carnages in the world reach a tipping point, where it appears nearly hopeless for intervention.
This is not such a tipping point.
The reality that it is difficult to identify yet where the terrorists originated is, in my mind, beside the point. Terrorism is a global industry, in short.
The reality is clear. This was well-organized and effective, and that's not good.
It was horrible. I was interested mostly in the post about the outdated police system in India. I know very little about that topic, but I certainly understand the public's demand for action.
This was horrible.
Shop Stampede-Mart.
It appears that the mentality of "Deeply Imbedded", and other thought fashiionistas like him, should remain just that. His fanciful relating of the latest disgusting, cowardly and hateful terroris brutality to colonialism, Third World-ism, or other fancied injustices attempts to legitimize somehow the actions of these fanatic murderers.
Let's cut through the sympathetic crapola about the "grievances" of those who commit these heinous killings and call them what they are: fanatics and murderers--they should be relentlessly hunted down, no matter how long it takes, and sent to live with how ever many virgins they believe they'll encounter in Heaven.
There is absolutely no justifying, on any political, religious, historical, or moral grounds the actions of these repulsive individuals--the only appropriate response is motivated outrage.
