I was debating an acquaintance over the on-again, off-again proposal to open a gay-friendly public high school in Chicago, when the difference between the two hit me like a ton of bricks:
While the two groups tend to have the same or similar beliefs, liberals have no concept of the future or the big picture. Progressives do.
I'm a progressive, I fully support same-sex marriage and I'm 100% against the plan in Chicago.
Forget "progressive." I don't even refer to my self as "liberal." I am proudly "left-wing." Take that Limbaugh, Hennity, Savage, and the rest of you a.m. radio fascists. Winston Churchill was a conservative. You and the other latter day pretenders to the title don't even come close!
The so-called "Progressives" have destroyed the party in my neck of the woods.
Aside from learning to recognize the progressive movement within the party, I have always shunned the "p" word, frankly, and have never been more proud to call myself a deep blue, capital-L Liberal.
In the spirit of Paul Douglas and Paul Simon, as a follower of the party that saved democracy three times in the last century, I am a proud Liberal.

Do liberal-progressive politicians have any realistic solution to continuing generations of illiterates and drop outs?
What ever happened to the notion of accountability?
What about class warfare?

If the rule is "whatever it takes to win and keep power," can't that approach lead to the same horrors we have seen before when the ends justified the means?
Now that you guys are in control, what can you do for all of us?

Think about it: Isn't there some valid reason why "knee jerk liberal" has become part of the lexicon?
Have you ever wondered why you people are properly called "ReTHUGlicans"? Have you looked at GW Bush or Dick Cheney's faces? These are War Criminals!

No. But certainly government has to learn how to facilitate the efforts of citizens to live happy lives - no government, left or right, has yet learned how to do this simple thing!

I do know that we human beings have to go to war against thieves, and War Criminals like GW Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzalves, and other assorted scoundrels.

It is indeed a very good idea to get the thieves, scoundrels, war criminals and such loathsome vermin out of the system

Why don't you work with human beings to put the war criminals in jail where they belong? And then, why don't you try and learn how to operate in a truly civil society? That might be of some value to all human beings.

I've been trying to start a grassroots campaign to rehabilitate "Liberal." A few years ago I designed a "Proud Liberal" bumper sticker on zazzle.com and talked to the local Democratic party about distributing them, making them available at the county fair, handing them out at the caucus, etc. Although it didn't catch on, I often get an enthusiastic thumbs up from other drivers when I'm out and about in the car.
There's also your garden variety knee-jerk jerk.
liberals are pushovers who bolster corporate america, whereas progressives get it done and are not afraid to hurt anyone's feelers doing it.
liberals feel the need to peg you on a spectrum, as they can only think of "left" or "right" (or something completely mediocre, like "center-left"): they live in a 2-dimensional world.
I laugh loud and hard when I hear american fascists whine about liberals -- as if liberals were a threat to changing their world!
I fear that Obama will turn out to be a liberal rather than a progressive.
