Republicans, stop calling Obama elitist

Because the real reason you don't like him is that he's smarter than you.

Actually Obama's like

the Sidney Poitier character in "In the Heat of the Night." He's just so much smarter and so much classier than everyone else in the vicinity. Sigh. Wouldn't it be nice to have a President actually smart enough to solve problems?

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:01 PM

More please!

Okay, I disagree with the slam about "Half of Pennsylvania isn't ready for black quarterbacks", but in the context of a Bill Maher rant it works.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:02 PM

Are you sure you named all her kids?

Isn't there a Trog in there somewhere?

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:03 PM

Welcome Back!

We missed you! As always, Bill, YOU ROCK!

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:05 PM

COOL BILL....

As usual, Bill Maher cuts to the chase. Having him on SALON is very cool.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:05 PM

@ Mehitabel

Hell, at this point I'd be happy with a President that wasn't actively preventing other people from solving problems and doing his best to create more.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:06 PM

Governor Yup Yup

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

LOVE YOU, Bill!!!!

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:07 PM

Bill Maher plagiarized me!

Just kidding.

But, I did comment elsewhere online just yesterday that Americans who want a President to be just like them must be incredibly narcissistic. In effect, they are saying that they are qualified to be President.

Some of y'all just have way too much self-esteem.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:07 PM

A freebie, Bill:

Q: What was Palin's worst mistake as Governor?

A: Letting Bristol wear the "Drill Here, Drill Now!" t-shirt.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:08 PM

good one, Mehitabel

re: "In the Heat of the Night"

Also reminiscent of "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"...at the White House!

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:10 PM

AT LEAST WE KNOW WHAT HER REAL HOBBY IS....

I'm surprised that no one picked up on the hilarity of Sarah Palin, mother of five, using the term "laying pipe" in her acceptance speach.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:10 PM

Anyone who actually studied in high school knows...

that most Americans suffer from a huge inferiority complex.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:15 PM

Only in America

Is it a badge of honor to be a doofus.

Read a Book America!!!

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:16 PM

he's just a man,

and only one man. he isn't gonna fix anything, because he's just one man. worse than that, he's a politician, a class of people who lie, cheat and steal for a living.

as everyone knows, it's in the news regularly, politicians commonly seduce underage girls, boys and unattended sheep, daily divert public money to their 'friends', and publicly laud democracy while making damn sure it doesn't happen in their neighborhood.

the reason the usa has squandered national wealth and world leadership while under the unfettered direction of politicians is... because it's been under the unfettered direction of politicians.

so go on to vote for your 'one man', whichever he is, and imagine your duty is done. but whether your guy is an elitist or a war hero, he's not going to change you, because ignorant and lazy clucks are the reason he's king for four years.

change? pollies like things just the way they are.

Not helping, Maher!

So much for taking the high road.

Until now, the multitude of reasons I could feel good about being a life-long Democrat and Obama supporter included the fact that we refused to stoop to their level.

Let's re-elevate the dialogue to higher level, please.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:25 PM

Bill's a comedian, not a statesman

Um, sugarbeet, it's not Bill Maher's job to take the high road. He's a comedian and satirist - it's his job to TAKE DOWN people who need taking down.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:26 PM

Very funny, BUT

What Obama needs is populism. And more of it. Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, Kerry - what do all of these people have in common? Being a policy wonk does not result in winning elections.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:26 PM

Welcome back, Bill!

Yes, the laying pipe reference was priceless! Also loved McCain last night saying Palin, having "worked hard with her hands and "nose", knows..."

Since she's from Alaska, I had a feeling that that wasn't a real tan on her nose!

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:28 PM

@ sugarbeet

Democrats always want to win by being nice, doing their homework, and having the best stands on the issues. Unfortunately, that's not enough.

A supporter of Adlai Stevenson once called out, "Governor Stevenson, all thinking people are for you!" And Stevenson answered, "That's not enough. I need a majority."

I think Obama's right to stay classy, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to. Someone has to take the attack to the other side.

DrewH1963

laughing my ass off.

thanks.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:33 PM

Two kinds of people in the world

When Reagan Democrats think of the term "elitist," they think of somebody who actually had the discipline to study, get good grades and go on to college, while they were eyeing the sheep in their neighbor's pasture.

When ordinary Democrats think of "elitist" they think of Cheney, Bush, Rockefeller, Andrews and Flagler.

When Rush Limbaugh speaks of elitists, he means somebody who doesn't have to pay a prostitute from Dominican Republic in order to get laid.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:36 PM

Thank you Bill!

I got tired to Republicans at the RNC who kept saying that Obama was elitist. Geez, a guy goes to the top law school and does well in life and all of a sudden "he's not one of us." They come off sounding jealous and bitter that they couldn't cut it at Harvard. I value education and admire people who work hard to excel at achieving knowledge and experience to get a degree. Sorry. Obama still gets my vote. I'd rather vote for him than a VP that jumped through 6 (!) colleges just to get one degree. I think that shows who is smart and who is not.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:37 PM

The idea of the "common man"

as good enough to lead and represent America was invented long before America became an above-average country, when things still needed to be invented and (re)discovered in order to create what became America.

Let's give Bush and McCain a space more tailored to their talents and abilities. Antarctica! Before it shrinks to nothing! Good place to build character, or utilize whatever character one has. Very few critics around. Like Alaska.

Americans are awfully narcissistic, which baffles and embarrasses me.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:42 PM

qualified

It's fair to say that Obama is more qualified to be president than Maher is to be a comedian.

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:44 PM

the little meth problem in Wasilla

Articles floating around peg Wasilla AK as the Meth capital of Alaska. Ok.. so... when do we find out how much it became a problem during George W. Palin's term of office as mayor..... and with five kids..... which one of them is on meth? Maybe that's how Sarah Palin keeps her trim figure.... and why baby blob was born with an extra chromosome. I'm just saying.... since the media is saying "meth capital of Alaska".... that's gotta count for something

Friday, September 5, 2008 02:46 PM

McStupid & Ms. Palin (Our Miss Brooks look-a-like)

What is up with this "Ms. Palin" BS ...? Isn't the "proper moniker" for a married female "Mrs."?

... and will somebody Puleeeeeeeeaaaze do something with that "BeeHive Hairdoo" of hers!

CNN reported yesterday that the "soon-to-be son-in-law", ... yeah, him! the one with the "shotgun barrel bruises" on his ass, is not only a self professed "red-neck" from Wasilla, who's mom says "ya'll just leave me alone ... I'm a country gal from Wasilla, Alaska and that's how I want to stay" ... but he's also known as a "frequent flier red-neck"... with a temper ... more or less! Seems he likes to beat-up on people smaller and weaker than him. He already has at least one other little bundle of joy to proudly call his "spawn", er, i mean own. Oh, and this ones momma .... she was only thirteen! For somebody who vehemntly boast's "I don't want no phuckin kids" on his "My-Space" page ... yeah, the one with the "OBAMA" ad on it, he sure practices what he preaches, huh?
