Bill Clinton relates well because he comes across as down home. I don't care for him myself and I voted for Obama. But many people like him because he comes across familiar and informal.
Re "hillbilly" It's like the N word. We can call ourselves that, but anyone else is asking for an argument because we know its perjorative.
WHC gonzo, who is "they?" Who are "those people?"
"Those people" are only interested in money and they rule the world.
"Those people" only want to molest children and pass on their AIDS.
"Those people" only want to be in gangs and cause crime and be pimps and hos.
"Those people" are only terrorists and suicide bombers.
"Those people" are lazy and won't speak our language and just want to take our jobs.
"Those people" are inbred and ignorant and racist.
All kinds of "those people in the world." You're just contributing to the prejudice.
Jist hold your horse a minute there little lady. Now see here little sister them folk in W.Va and rural Ky need lots of attention from the fideral gum' mint. There is no doubt about that. Their economy is shot, but then so is ours and all due to George W. Bush and his Neocons and his Theocons, including those at Franciscan Univ, my religion,. who always give Bush a 'free pass' no matter who he kills or what he does.
Bush buys their votes and them with cheap promises.
The difference between them and us is that they vote against their own best interests. They vote against the welfare of their own families and we do not. Or, as John Grisham, the famous novelist, said on Bill Moyers Journal, they "vote rich and live poor". I guess they must still believe in Reaganomics, trickle down economics. They are still stuck on the notion that if they vote everything to the rich the rich will somehow, 'magically', take care of them. And they are still waiting for that to happen.
These rural people actually believe that the Repub party, truly, is the party of god(small g) and Obama has no religion because he is a Dem(godless liberals), or he is a Muslim, or he comes from a big city, or some other piece of crap that Rove and the Rethugs keep telling them.
Their church's will tell them exactly who to vote for and that is exactly who they will vote for, W H I T E and Republican. Their pastors are as racist and narrow minded as they are. Do we all remember that the neo-nazis are firmly entrenched in these areas as are the neo-confederates. In fact, one of the most prominent neo-nazis is a minister in W.Va.
These are the people who vote Repub, even as their mines are caving in and killing their miners, husbands, fathers. These are the people who vote Republican while the coal companies 'mountaintop' and put the 'tailings' in the creeks and thus the drinking water for their children to drink, and die or suffer a lifetime of sickness. Don't these people remember 'black lung' disease, and that comes from the coal mines and that comes to them courtesy of the Rethuglican party.
Franciscan Univ. of Steubenville, Ohio will tell them to vote Repub. While at the very same time a mine safety expert who teaches there can and has told them exactly who and how and why their mines caved in, yup, once again Bush and the Repugs and their Theocons and their Neocons. The ugliness of the Repug party is everywhere in their lives and yet, they still vote for the Rethugs.
And another thing are these rural folk really Dems or some form of far-right-wing Dem such that no one would ever recognize them as a Dem. They are so conservative that the social/economic conservatives have almost no difficulty telling them who to vote for and they just keep swallowing the Repug line of crap.
And another thing they will never vote for Obama because he is B-L-A-C-K and they are racists. They got nothing left but their racism and they are still holding on to it. Even their pastors are racists.
Having said that, if Obama gets the presidency he should and must work for them just as much as he works for any other American, because it's the right thing to do. It's just that simple and I believe he will do exactly that. Because he knows something about poverty, and way far more than Bush or McSame or the Theocons or the Neocons ever will.
Anyone who is a sentient human being knows more about poverty than the Rethugs do. The Rethugs will never do anything for poor people it is absolutely dead set against the social conservatives mentality. That is exactly why they call themselves social conservatives, they are absolutely dead set against any form of 'social engineering', any form of anything that attempts to make the lives of people a little bit better. They make absolutely NO attempt to hide that fact. They care not one damn for living people who may, and will, cost them some money. They are the party of me, not the party of we, as Thom Hartman of Air America Radio so eloquently expresses it. Selfishness abounds in the Rethug party and among their Neocons and even among theirTheocons.
This lady has it all wrong about why they do not vote for Obama. My best guess is that come November they will vote for McBush because he is white and he is from the party of god, the white mans god.
And for the sake of disclosure I am white and live in a rural area, so I think I know a bit about how rural people think. The Repubs will play them and they will vote accordingly, Repub.
It's darn hard for me to dredge up much sympathy for these poor people, but I will try. I will do what ever I can to once again make sure they are not forgotten despite the fact that not only do they not help themselves they don't help me either. In fact, every time they vote they vote against me and my best interests.
