So Hillary supporters are Republicans? This is unbelievable!

Not everyone shares your viewpoint...it's as simple as that.

Great thought, but I see two problems.

First, Reid could certainly step down, be he can't appoint his successor. Second, the fact is, HRC is not very well liked by many of her colleagues in the Senate. I have a hard time believing she'd be confirmed as Majority Leader.

But what I don't understand is, with his huge wins in the Southern states, isn't it possible that Obama could carry some of these states in November?

Yes. Good thing, too. It may not actually be possible to win the presidency without carrying at least a couple of Southern states. This is why the last three Democratic winners have been from the South.

Basically my question is: is it so inconceivable that Obama might carry some of the Deep South states in Nov?

    Not at all.

You might have some uncertainties here, but it appears you're very much on the right track. Go with it.

  • Why should she have to drop out?

The conventional wisdom seems to be that "healing" won't occur unless Clinton drops out. I disagree. I think that forcing her to drop out will only serve to further alienate her supporters. If the DNC and Obama start treating Clinton and her supporter's like valuable members of the team instead of like children who must be brought into line, then "healing" will occur much more rapidly.

Clinton has not lost. Stop trying to force Clinton out and let her run her campaign. She is not using dirty tricks on Obama. She has been running a straightforward "I'm more experienced" campaign. He and his supporter's would do well to stop attacking her and start focusing on presenting his own qualifications. With the primary still running, the media focus will stay on the Democratic Party. The DNC and Obama supporters should stop focusing on beating Clinton and start focusing on convincing her supporter's that Obama is worth voting for. You can start by showing Clinton some respect.

  • Great article -- well written, argued and fresh substance to boot!

I was just wondering to myself yesterday what kind of negotiations the Obama and Clinton camps are having -- or will be having soon, one way or another. This piece was really illuminating and covered an area that political junkies don't often get to read about.

    Thanks, Salon.

So Hillary supporters are Republicans? This is unbelievable!

It's well-established that several thousands of Republicans have 'switched parties' to support Hillary over Obama.

Perhaps you were unaware of that.

Not everyone shares your viewpoint...it's as simple as that.

You and Hillary for sure. Not enough to be significant.

  • Obama and McCain

Simply are not good candidates and there are many, many of us out here who cannot believe that Hillary Clinton has ended up where she has. To us, she's clearly head and shoulders above the other two, and she obviously believes this herself. Sen. Clinton cares deeply about this country and may well have serious qualms about either Obama or McCain taking over the Oval Office. Deep enough to keep her in the race until she's completely out of money and time.

p.s. Any chance that salon can cut back on the Obama wallpaper? Seeing his face day after day after day on nearly every page (not just on this site) is getting really old. I can't be the only one experiencing severe Obama face fatigue.

  • @walter_map

It is well established that Obama encouraged Republicans to be "Democrats for a day" so that they would vote AGAINST Clinton. Either Obama is a fool, or you are.

  • @sesanders.

Sorry, you are entitled to political observations, but when it based on the delusion that Hilary can win votes...on ANY level, you are easily dismissed. Sorry, and it isn't because you are a woman or a man, it is because you are clueless.

  • I'd hate to have you people with me in a fox hole

Obama is the nominee. He needs to reach out to Mrs. Clinton and the former President for their support. The Democratic party will come together to take on McCain.

You don't think Obama can win in November, fine. Please take you pessimistic and defeatist attitude with you as you sit this one out.

Otherwise, suck it up and join the fight. I can guarantee that the Clintons won't just lie down and hand it to the Republicans.

It's a long slugfest to November. A million things can happen between now and then. There is no one under the sun that can say with certainty that Obama can't win or will win in November. What do you think the odds were a year ago that he would defeat Hillary Clinton for the nomination?

Its a fools game to under estimate the Clintons but I think its equally foolish to under estimate Obama. His rise in national politics has proven that if nothing else.

    So stop the self flagellation.

Stop being shell shocked by the big bad Republicans. Democrats have new weapons at their disposal we didn't have even four years ago. We've got more cash, bigger and more accurate voter databases, more state governments and the machines that go with them, a more energized electorate, net media outlets that put right wing talk radio to shame, a younger more hopeful candidate, and we're going kick the Republcans asses in some of the most solidly Republican Congressional district in the country.

Either sign on for the big win and be a part of history or sulk in the corner.

We want you with us. The Democratic party needs you. But if all you plan to do is pull down the party's nominee, then go in peace.

I agree that disrespectful, supercilious attacks on Clinton supporters will not help Obama or convince us to back away from Hillary. It actually hardens our resolve and makes us feel less like embracing him.

  • KateTex

I can't be the only one experiencing severe Obama face fatigue.

In case you are toooooo ignorant, Clinton is toast. Her deathwatch at Slate is at 2.5%. Now will you go away?

  • KateTex

Obama and McCain Simply are not good candidates and there are many, many of us out here who cannot believe that Hillary Clinton has ended up where she has.

It's just possible that your own high opinion of your political instincts is, well, unjustified.
