  • Excellent piece...

THIS is the kind of Salon fare I remember from the old days.

    Good stuff...

  • Backroom deals...

can be an ugly but necessary evil. This can be framed by those outside the room any number of mean-spirited ways.

  • I'm in no hurry for her to "concede" defeat in a razor thin election

Particularly as Obama Dukakis is obviously destined for a landslide loss.

  • Presidential Precedent

I would feel much better about this story if there was a presidential primary precedent that ended well for the dems. Is there ? Has there ever been a protracted democratic primary which resulted in a general election win for the democrat ?

  • ShawnWM

Obama Dukakis is obviously destined for a landslide loss.

Really? You're going to have to explain this one to us.

    Can you?

If you're not just indulging in partisan snark and have something to say, please do. But drop the gratuitous name-calling. It undermines your credibility.

  • No deal, let her keep running

She's done anyway, why negotiate with her? She wants to keep going her, let her.

And most certainly, do NOT use my hard-earned donations to Barack to pay off her debts.

Let her finish herself off, she's been doing a terrific job at it, then let her take responsibility. Let her, and her acolytes, show us what level of dignity they can muster.

  • Someone asks her nicley

Senator Dianne Feinstein will meet with Hillary, and stand beside her as Hilary concedes, then will Feinstain will endorse Obama, thus giving other Hillary SDs the signal it's okay.

  • What Hillary wants is to be president

What it would take for her to concede defeat is not the various consolation prizes listed in the article.

Instead, she would have to be convinced that there is no possible way she could win.

Since this is not currently the case, she will continue.

  • PLEASE everyone just ignore every ShawnWM post

He obviously has no grasp on reality or is a Republican shill. Use your time for other pursuits and maybe he will go away...logic or thought doesn't phase him.

  • Racial and cultural dynamics

Hillary's math is just fine and she knows that Obama is a very iffy candidate for the Democrats in November. I think Limbaugh today hit the nail on the head with his assessment of Obama's chances (I dislike Limbaugh just as other liberals do, but he is correct this time). Obama's appeal to liberals, the young, and blacks is not enough to win. He needs middle American votes, white votes and though no one would ever admit that race is the reason they are not voting for him, it is still a very realistic reason--- just as the blacks will not admit that race is driving their block voting. When the fact that Wright and Michelle's lack of love for America is added into the mix, more conservative Democrats will not vote for him...they'll go to McCain as ridiculous as that is. I also think that many Jews think that Obama is anti-semitic because of Wright...plus the Reverend didn't help him at all with Catholics.

  • holy smokes! an Salon article that doesn't cite a friend or personal identity!

This does remind me of the old days. Was Joan out of the office today?

  • What does Hillary want?

Hillary wants the White House. Nothing suggests she'd be willing to trade down to concede.

An insider remembers -- and draws lessons from -- the backroom deals that ended another brutal, racially charged Democratic slugfest.

That was then. This is now. In liberal politics past history is a very uncertain indicator of future performance, and this is a particularly idiosyncratic race.

A number of commentators have pointed out that the Clinton strategy may be to willingly compromise party unity so severely that McCain would end up winning, continuing Bush's screw-ups and criminality. This would presumably enhance Hillary's chances in 2012. The arguments favoring this perception of Hillary's strategy are sufficiently compelling that they cannot be much discounted.

Treacherous? Yes. Damaging to the Democratic party? Probably. Damaging to the country? Also probably.

Does Hillary care? From here it doesn't look like it.

  • The Throne

    What would it take?

A royal appointment. If she were made King, that would probably satisfy her. At least for awhile. I don't know how long it would take before she decided to extend her empire.

And don't call her queenie either.

  • Negotiations

The wife and I talked about this last night. What exactly might induce HRC to finally take her leave? I think it's very simple, and the wife (an Obie supporter) agrees: allow Mr.; Harry Reid to fall on his sword for the good of the party and give up the Senate Majority Leader office to Hillary.

This will also prove even more compelling than a mere VP spot, since the Ds stand to gain at least 4-5 more seats in the Senate and possibly 12-15 in the House. She will be able to wield real power, hell - even hold up some of Obie's pet bills in committee if she doesn't life them. Quid pro quo.

To me it is the best negotiation deal going, along with Obie doing debt service for her - since he does have such deep pockets compliments of all the Wall Streeters.

  • @sesanders. I hate Rush except when it...

Except when it justifies my delusions...give me break.

In the reddest, and most racist, of states north of the mason dixon line, Obama comes that close to winning is a fact that can't be ignored. All this babbling about swing states that she would win is complete bs and doesn't hold up to any thoughtful analysis. Because Hilary won a specific state means that Obama won't win it is incredibly intellectually bankrupt. But that isn't even the point. Obama has fulfilled every qualification to be the nominee and you can keep yapping about bs...but believe it or not there have to be some rules. You might want to catch the Daily Show bit about Hilary claiming that the super delegates are the to be taken most seriously-but then that was when she was in a different situation.

I think Limbaugh today hit the nail on the head with his assessment of Obama's chances

Rush's statements are calculated to contain just enough truth to seem credible, and no more, while inflicting the maximum damage on liberal positions possible. You let yourself get suckered. Unless you're trying to sucker the rest of us.

Obama's appeal to liberals, the young, and blacks is not enough to win.

You're making the invalid assumption - or shall we say presumption - that Obama has zero support except from liberals, the young, and blacks. Other demographic groups may prefer Hillary to Obama to some degree, but this in no way precludes the very real possibility that they would support Obama over McCain in November.

    I smell a Republican rat.
