What would it take for Clinton to concede defeat? An insider remembers -- and draws lessons from -- the backroom deals that ended another brutal, racially charged Democratic slugfest.
  • Geez People!

I can't believe I actually read all of these responses, but I did. To everyone who's been slinging mud back and forth - stop already, you're not changing anyone's position and you just come out looking like a bunch of kids.

Bottom line is that you can't call yourself a Democrat if you are not prepared to support whomever is the candidate, whether it's Clinton or Obama. If you say that you'll vote for McCain or stay out of the race if Obama is the candidate, you aren't a Democrat. The same goes for Obama supporters, although it seems much less likely that an Obama supporter would vote for McCain. We need solidarity this time if we're going to avoid another four years of Bush, because that's exactly what McCain is promising. The idea of that makes me ill, frankly.

And before you make assumptions about me, I'm a white woman in my 40s who is middle class but with a master's degree who lives in Chicago, so I guess I fall into both Obama and Clinton's demographic. I actually voted for Clinton in the Illinois primary, but will be more than happy to vote for Obama in the general election if he's the candidate, which it appears will be the case.

For what it's worth, I have no doubt that Conley is right - whomever does the conceding will line up behind the candidate because it's in his or her best interest, and in the party's best interest, to do so. I suggest you all do the same.
