What does Hillary want?
Hillary wants the White House. Nothing suggests she'd be willing to trade down to concede.
An insider remembers -- and draws lessons from -- the backroom deals that ended another brutal, racially charged Democratic slugfest.
That was then. This is now. In liberal politics past history is a very uncertain indicator of future performance, and this is a particularly idiosyncratic race.
A number of commentators have pointed out that the Clinton strategy may be to willingly compromise party unity so severely that McCain would end up winning, continuing Bush's screw-ups and criminality. This would presumably enhance Hillary's chances in 2012. The arguments favoring this perception of Hillary's strategy are sufficiently compelling that they cannot be much discounted.
Treacherous? Yes. Damaging to the Democratic party? Probably. Damaging to the country? Also probably.
Does Hillary care? From here it doesn't look like it.
