I once voted for Kucinich and still think he's tops.

And thanks, as always, delores. It's too bad my granny and yours couldn't have been friends. They both sound like they have moxie.

This is a really good piece, "Race to the bottom," discussing race and feminism and this presidential race: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080519/betsyreed

  • the big lie

You know, I read post after post by Obama Posters throwing "racisT" and "liars" and other negative buzzwords about the Clintons around like baseballs, and it illustrates just how marxist the Obama campaign is. The Big Lie Technique is alive and well in Obamaland.

I don't know if many of you realize what "the big lie" refers to. It is a tactic which asumes that if you tell a lie which is big enough, and you tell it often enough, people will believe it. Marxists love the big lie.

One of the best illustrations of the big lie and marxist tactics occurred before the 1996 olympics in Atlanta. Atlanta's "cultural officer" (a giveaway right there) was interviewed by the LA Times, and since most Olympics showcase the local historical and cultural scene, a question was asked of the cultural officer about The Old South at the Atlanta Games. The twenty-something cultural officer breezily replied, the Atlanta games will have no Old South presence, the Old South never existed. Yeah, War is Peace, Love is Hate, Freedom is Slavery in the 2008 election.

I have never seen such magnitude of dishonesty in a campaign as is occurring in the 2008 Presidential election. What rough beast, its hour come round at last slouches toward DC, to be born?

  • Historical stupidity about the Big Lie

rphillips, who is obviously very young stupid, says:

"You know, I read post after post by Obama Posters throwing "racisT" and "liars" and other negative buzzwords about the Clintons around like baseballs, and it illustrates just how marxist the Obama campaign is. The Big Lie Technique is alive and well in Obamaland."

Well, dummy, the Big Lie is not maxist. It is fascist. This is the Goebbels technique originally.

It's important to get your historical facts right, if you are going to pretend that you are reasoning from history. But, to do that, you need to know a little history. Obviously, you do not.

You are historically ignorant, but very typical of your Klintoon gang. You folks actually believe that Hillary has the superior experience, and that the Gas Tax Swindle is public policy.

  • new "read more" system

Well-done on the new "read more" feature. I always hated those meaningless embedded links in every single article. Thanks salon!

  • The Black Vote is voting for Obama because he is Black - It's racist to deny it!

Obviously that sounds oxymoronic, but is it?

Why can't this guy simply give Obama his due?

Why does he feel the need to explain Obama's success among African Americans as due to HRC's incompetence gaining their vote?

Beyond that, why does anyone feel the need to justify and explain Obama's winning margins among Black voters beyond the obvious?

In our multi-cultural nation, why are they afraid to admit that yes African Americans finally given a choice to vote for one of their own are proudly doing exactly that?

Where are the companion articles to this one trying to explain why Bloomberg, Shumer, Leiberman received the overwhelming majority of Jewish votes in their contests, and the reason they did, is their non-Jewish opposition didn't try hard enough to win them over?

Without the Jewish vote, Lieberman probably would NOT have been re-elected.

No one is trying to explain away why Hispanics/Latinos vote overwhelmingly for one of their own in LA, CA or along the border, and NO ONE is trying to write articles explaining how their "non-Hispanic" opposition could have won that vote.

The fact that this guy feels he needs to "cover for Obama's overwhelming success among Black voters" is what clearly roots the inspiration for this article in the hard to eliminate insidious racism that is everywhere, but rarely recognized.

While it may not be "politically expedient" for the African American community to overwhelmingly vote for Obama and fuel fears of this insidious racism, the truth is this habit of an ethnic /racial group voting for one of their own is pretty much an American tradition in elections.

Why is it so shocking and seemingly inexplicable to this guy now?

I seriously doubt if there are many African Americans voting for Obama, because they hate white people That would then make it something to worry about.

That kind of thinking is the reason behind so many are quick to suspect why many Whites will not support Obama.

Is it simply because he is Black?

If so then it needs to be addressed directly. Coy, sham articles like this do far more harm than good in my book.

The need to explain, why Obama is getting these #s gives proof to the lie that White voters who voted for David Duke years back solely because he was white is the same thing as African American voters going for Obama.

    It is NOT.

In a multi-cultural nation, we need to be open and intelligent enough to accept ethnic/racial pride is NOT in and of itself bad or a racist.

If this writer were so enlightened, he'd realize this article was completely UNnecessary.

People of all colors and ethnicities have a right to be proud of themselves and their communities.

From that perspective, NO one should be surprised at Obama's success in the Af/Am community.

No level of HRC incompetence can explain 90+% for Obama, give me a break. Only David Duke could get a lower percentage

Simply voting for a guy or gal from the home team is NOT racist. And in Voting for Obama, that's basically what AFrican Americans are doing.

Writing this bogus piece trying to explain this as due to HRC's incompetence rather than due totally to Obama's incredible appeal is truly racist.

  • Obama as VP would solve Clinton's problem

My guess is Clinton calculated that she was more likely to win the nomination by going after white voters, confident that after she had the nomination choosing Obama as her VP would square everthing with the AA community. In other words the 10%-20% of extra support from the black community was less than she could get with another incompatible strategy in the Clinton campaign's assesment.
