LET IT GO " ENOUGH WRIGHT "ANALYSIS" ALREADY !
The MSM has been making hay with this stupid Wright business, trying to bury Obama's campign in a pile of manure.
Salon should not have to contribute to the fake furor with any more "interpretative" commentary.
LET IT GO; DROP IT ALREADY ! We've had more than we can stand. It's beginning to look like the manufactrured 90's furor about the Clintons when EVERYBODY without exception felt impelled to express an opinion.
Put a sock in it ! As the new agers say: "IT"S WAY OVER !".

That's not a fair comparison
When King talked about the possibility of American damnation he was warning people to be aware of the consequences of their actions. When Wright said "God Damn America" he was calling down the wrath of God on this nation for it's sins. King believed that human beings - white and black - could work together to make things better. Wright believes that white Americans have arrogantly forsaken black people, in spite of all evidence to the contrary.
As for "Why America May Go To Hell", I have never been able to find out what was in that speech. I don't know if anybody knows. But the title sounds more like a warning than a threat. Please don't go too far comparing Wright to King. A lot of people hold King in very high esteem, for good cause. We need heroes. I know that heroes often have feet of clay, but we need them anyway. King fills that role for us.
-
i think what walton meant, jebldmm
was that king was viewed as angry and radical at the time (and yes, i remember that time - i'm 62 - and he WAS viewed as scary and angry and dangerously radical by a lot of white people.) barack obama is not at all so - yet people still find him very threatening. (not so many love hillary so much)

John Hagee
Glad to see we're still talking about Wright on salon.com.
See sig.

This examination of Wright's faith and black liberation theology was requested of Walsh by some Obama supporters.
I just want to remind Obama supporters who are upset that Wright was mentioned again of that. I think it may have been weeping for Brunnhilde who said that we needed a more in depth examination of Wright's beliefs. Here we have it. Joan Walsh has provided exactly what some Obama supporters requested, so attacking her for this article is not really fair.
-
ok that's funny chris
even funnier than hadashito who said basically the same thing. but what else are we to talk about? you mention hagee, i did too, but elephantman didn't write back. it's ok to change the topic - no one is going to mark you down in red, but you have to start the topic off.
-
whoa, AKA weeping is Black!
why would he ask a white irish woman to explain black liberation theology? are you sure you remember this correctly?
-
Not new or radical
That's my point about its not being new or radical.
Someone tell Salon's editorial staff.
This is a great interview. Sarah Posner followed in the best tradition of Salon and got the real story, rather than simply echoing the common talking points.

@aka smith
AKA Smith is one of the few pro-Clinton voices whose arguments aren't drowning in logical fallacy, overt partisanship and defensive, reactionary arguments.
I'd like to nominate him or her to write guest editorials about Clinton (or, if you must, anti-Obama) in lieu of Joan Walsh.
Flaming out the way Wright did this week was probably the best favor he could have done for Obama, allowing Obama to distance himself without being penalized for disloyalty, and allowing his supporters within churches like Wright's to accept that "it's all in the game."
I feel the worst about this mess not for Obama, Wright or even Michelle Obama, but for Obama's children. This whole situation must be very hurtful and confusing for them.
I am not going to sit here an say that nothing Obama has done in his campaign has been hurtful, but the manner in which the Clinton campaign exploits these and other situations fills me with shame and guilt.
We aren't supposed to be the party that engages in politics of attrition.
-
Chris, AKA is female
and before you curse out Walsh - remember. her job as editor is to get our juices flowing - an interesting back and forth. you have to admit, this is anemic. really, if there are 50 posts before it closes i'll be surprised. i don't think there is any harm coming to obama's kids. they are probably staying at grandma's playing with the puppy michelle promised them.

@david
Unless Elephantman is a brilliant concern-troll burlesquing right-wing ideology for the sheer art of it, I'm not counting him as either a Clinton or Obama supporter.
I'm saying that this thing needs to wind down.. we need to "move-on."
The Wright controversy is interesting because it highlights the divide between white liberal intellectuals in the Democratic Party and the (until recently) loyal urban black and hispanic members of the party. A division that, if gamed correctly by the fear-manufacturing right, will lead to a Democratic loss in November.
What a fete if Republicans can draw in low-income blacks the way they drew in low-income whites 40 years ago! This is what we all need to work to mitigate.

@david
I see you're drinking too. Lachaim.

To Christopher Michael Neill
Thank you for your kind words. Just like any other partisan, I get upset and just lose it every now and then.
I think (I hope!) we will all come together in the fall. Perhaps even they (Clinton and Obama) will also unite in the fall to defeat John McCain. We must all be practical. I believe Joan Walsh is practical and that, while profiting Salon with the click, click, click, she is also preparing us to face whatever compromises are necessary to make the best Democratic opportunity in years to take back the White House an actual reality.
Like you, I hope the Obama children are well shielded from the political fray. I even feel sorry for Chelsea.
PS: david sugarman would not like me as a Salon writer.
