Black religion expert Jonathan Walton on black liberation theology's roots in slavery, MLK Jr.'s "God damn America moment" and what Jeremiah Wright has in common with Gennifer Flowers.

  • Poor Martin....

MLK should rise up and kick all of your stupid asses. First of all, for the record, Rev. Wright is the anti-MLK. PERIOD. And no matter how stupid white people and evil black people try to spin MLK's theory (social, political, and religious) he would have stood up and GOD DAMNED Rev. Wright and then exited that repulsive church.

Second point is that Rev. Wright has nothing to do with black liberation per se, but white persecution. Please don't spin hatred of others into self-love because this girl won't go there. And MLK was careful NEVER to go there. You posers might want to go and READ MLK's writings before you start quoting him or paraphrasing him or using him in anyway.

Finally, hate is hate, and you diminish yourself, MLK, and all good people by trying to make Wright right because he is just a bloated old asshole. Period. Children can see this, blue collar workers can see this, and it is just angry people and alleged intellectuals who try to make hate into love. NOT.

  • STOP! STOP! STOP!

Can't, even, Solon get past Jeremiah Wright? No matter what

is written about Wright, just prolongs this "guilt-by-association"

drumbeat. When do we get back to the important stuff--

    lapel pins?

If I were Obama, I would say to the Super Delegates: Pick

sides by May 15, or I'm out of here.

  • Wright's theology might not be new but it sure is radical

This article is so much wasted motion. Whatever it is filled with, it signifies nothing. I don't think many people would consider it of any religious merit.

However, the joining of liberal religion with radical social policies and agendas which Alinsky designed to promote socialism and "change" society is pretty clear in this "story".

  • I've provided the CIA

a list of Salon letter writers for their next batch of AIDS...

  • I think some of the "shock" at Rev. Wright is that those clips, I think, confirmed some white folks fears

about what black folks say about them when they are alone ....

And Wright's not about to "retract" or "apologise" after all these years of saying those things (nor should he, either to help Obama or to assuage the fears of white folks) ... he probably "explained" well enough in the Moyer's interview.

I keep trying to think generationally -- it's been more than 30 years since the deaths of MLK and Malcolm X, the COINTELPRO destruction of the Black Panthers. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and Charles Rangel have been increasingly ridiculed over the last 5 year, ferociously. GWBush didn't even bother to meet with the NAACP for years and years. Black folks and black concerns have been conspicuously erased from day to day life. Katrina brought outrage and anguish ... but it's still stagnating ... it's being rebuilt now out of need and desperation but there's still real questions and controversy about the levies and the long term viabilty of it's existence... everyone was outraged, not much change ... (do the celebrity gestures help or hurt? I'm not sure)

Anyway, there are a lot of people over voting age who have never experienced a charismatic angry black leader -- Chris Rock and other comedians really count here. (It's possible that there are youthful leaders I'm not aware of, but I'm doubtful there's anyone at a national leadership level).

Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition was a very serious attempt to create a national movement, coalition ... times change, change doesn't happen, people get older, coalitions fade (in addition to whatever other factors are involved) (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) and After Kennsington are two organizations that have taken up serious left-wing reform/community organizing.

Rev. Wright may be a fossil ... but I'm not sure what came after ... that whole crop of black republicans we see on television all the time making fun of Jesse and Rev. Al?

I remember a few months ago when breathless letter writers wondered if Obama would literally survive the campaign (or would he be gunned down, was the implication) ... Him? I thought. Him? I'm still saying. Show me his inner angry black man, PLEASE.

IMHO, this will cool off ...but it will take time.

We can't have a "national discussion on race" if everyone runs away every time it gets controversial ... this is probably as good a place to start as any. Wright has broken no laws. He has not avocated stockpiling arms or advanced weapons training. He's not encouraging black folk build bunkers.

    Why not start here?

  • sorry two corrections ...

The young black comedians (and other "entertainers") by and large do NOT count here imho ... they're great for singing to the choir, but seem to have committed presence in politics ...

The "After Kensington" should be "After Downing Street" (I googled to verify but not well enough. I used to think the organization was British and have always had trouble with the name . Sorry)
