  • The Great Depression Rationale

The current U.S.A economical situation is the best example that justifies and simplifies the fundamental rationale of socialism.

    J. Hernandez, Ph.D.

  • who is to blame

Is President Bush to blame for our country problems! I have seen America go down hill in the last eight years. The price of gasoline has risen 200% in the last eight years. I can only comment on the high cost of home fuel. The cost of oil has risen about 250% in the last eight years.( one thousand dollars per tank full 275 gallons compared to Two hundred Seventy Five dollars per 275 gallons) I am sure the price of nature gas has risen out of control. The oil companies are making record breaking profits and claim the high prices are not there fault. It seems know one wants to take responsibility for the problem. I feel the only reason we are not in a bigger Great depressions is because of the safe guards that were put in position so it would not happen. Those in the end may not even help! The president has gotten away with so much wrong doing while in office and yet he remains in office why is that . The Vice President shot a man while out hunting and lied about it and he stays in office? The next president is going to be burden with to many problems to be inexperience like Obama Barack. Lets awake up America before it is to late

  • Equality

Also, to add to my last post, I want to address the statement on the inequality of wealth. Capitalism does not, and has never, claimed to offer universal equality of wealth, it strives instead for universal prosperity. This is different. The fact is that the lower class in America have it better than the vast majority of the world. The fact is also that, in communist countries throughout history, the people were economically equal (well, except for those people with the right political clout), yes, they were econonimcally equal in abject poverty. China's gains have been in direct proportion to their easing of economic restrictions. Everyone who responded so eagerly to this ridiculous article needs to think these things through a little better. The obvious answer is rarely the right one.

  • Wow

Try praying to the god that our founding fathers prayed to? No god? I'm already there.

The fact that people see me as smearing the rich tells all. I did not. I said that they are lucky to be rich, the vast majority of them. I have nothing against people who are lucky and who have benefited from an environment that rewards their skills (not speaking of the unscrupulous here, of which there are many). All I said is that the notion that they inherently deserve that money, and that society can't tax them for reaping the windfalls of a social construct, is problematic.

And all this talk of crack whores suggests a lot of displacement. You have to be on pretty shaky moral ground to see any significant percentage of the people who didn't get lucky (or game the system) as crack whores. I'm guessing that cheating on your taxes demands some kind of bizarre view of the unwashed masses to help you sleep at night.

To all of those who are claiming Leonard is advancing marxism, or believe that our "free market" is really that, there's little I can say. You are stuck in your world view.

I only pray, to whatever god, that when the shit hits the fan, those of you who seem to think the rich are somehow better than the poor are brought down there with your fellow Americans, so that you can think about what an asshole you are now. I can think of few gods who would consider any other outcome divine.

  • not even close

We may be nearing a depression but Andrew Leonard's article is not convincing. It is another left leaning attempt to blame republicans from Reagan to G.W. Bush for all our problems. Don't forget we had 8 years of Clinton who handed off a faltering ecconomy to Bush. It's hard to blame the government for our over spending. (credit card debt) 24% unemployment is a far cry from 4.8%. Stocks down 90% compared to around 12%. Let's not jump the gun and freak out, there will be plenty of hard times without claiming this is the sequel to the Great Depression ... yet.

  • Oh, the Drama!

Typical leftwing, handwring "Chicken Littling". This story reads like a campaign speech from Obama...or Hillary, for that matter.

We're only about 20 points from the Great Depression's unemplyment numbers and only 95% of the total mortgages are current.

It's ironic that the left called for higher gas prices years ago (Al Gore "Earth in the Balance") to stimulate conservation. Well, they got their wish and now "the sky is falling".

  • Gross Domestic Product??

First of all I want you to reread this part PLEASE "Let's concede right off that the question is still speculative. The U.S. economy is not even technically in recession yet, either by the standard definition of two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth, or as "officially" declared by the National Bureau of Economic Research. If we define a "depression" as a decline in GDP of 10 percent, then the U.S. is nowhere close."

Well since not as much goods are made in the USA anymore how can we define GDP as we have been historically?! Clothing, TV's, Furniture, Bicycles, Autos, Auto & Truck parts! Many companies are exploiting CHEAP foreign labor. It's almost like a modern version of slavery and it is putting us in this country out of work! Also we put money in the stock market via 401K's that invest in some companies that outsource our work offshore so we are financing our own job losses. So if we've lost 10% of our manufacturing jobs maybe we are close to a Depression...think about it.

  • good night Mr. Reality

Sorry man but you have forgotten even your own words. “The bottom line for people who defend the somewhat rich who pay most of the taxes is this: they don't deserve that money in the first place. It's harsh, but true.” This is a powerful statement. Stop taking your cues from the talking heads by backpedaling on what you say, and start looking at reality.

To the displacement that you have placed me in, I stated firmly that “Yes there are unscrupulous rich people, as there are in any tax bracket.” I am not stating that it is OK to cheat on your taxes, so do not put words in my mouth. I sleep at night because I know that I do work, take care of my wife and kids, pay my taxes and do not cheat on them, and yes I pray to my God…not the gods that you love to pander to.

Pull your head out of your rear and realize that our government…all parties, are not in it for us. People love to blame the other party. I say blame the entire lot of them. America fought a Revolutionary War over less taxation and governmental control than we have today. We the people should stand up and, by force if necessary, take back the control of the system that made this country great. But you lovers of gun control would just flip over that. We are in this economic situation by design. The government hates us having more money and more control than they have. OK call me a nut job…I have heard worse. But if we do not wake up and smell the roses, we are all in for a world of hurt. Mark these words: Whoever the next President is will not matter, we will continue to fall apart as a nation until we realize that our moral standing is shot and needs repair, and we the people must once again control the government. This being unrealistic at best due to the rising number of socialist-atheistic types such as you Mr. Reality, our nation is screwed.
