I'll have a double standard latte, please
I became a vegetarian three years ago - better late than never. I could no longer stomach the taste of blood after eating a steak or debone a cooked chicken which bears an uncanny resemblance to a human baby - chubby thighs and belly.
Our culture reveres cats and dogs and use them as companions. We do not revere pigs, cows, calves, sheep, lambs or chickens: we eat them after others have slaughtered them - wouldn't want our hands to get all bloodied.
Except for areas where there is no other food sources - by the Arctic circle perhaps ? - there is no reason to eat animals.
I love cats and dogs although I choose not to "own" a pet myself. But as long as our culture allows for the killing and eating of animals who are as deserving of a decent life as dogs and cats and humans, we cannot wag our fingers at the Chinese.
Besides, every time we buy something Made in China - and that seems to be most of the products that the middle class and the working class buy these days - we are supporting their economy and thus indirectly aiding the Chinese governement in their suppression of Tibet.
Should we boycot the Olympics? If the Olympics were to be held in the US this year, should other countries boycot the games due to our de facto occupation of Iraq?
The US - or any other country with bloody hands - have zero leverage. Like the saying goes: "sweep in front of your own door" before you start pointing out the dirt in front of your neighbor's door.
Besides: the Olympics are a nice concept, but they have become a 3-ring circus and a joke.
