First of all, it's nice to come across someone who's familiar with the DCCC. For some reason, few people seem to be familiar with the "church of the pioneers." And as I think I said (no time to go back and reread my babble right now), I had no problem with the acceptance of gay congregants nor the fact that our usual soloist was also an atheist. In fact, he made things pretty interesting.

Also, I think I said I was radicalized by my association with the church in change. It just got (mine did, dunno about yours) a little crazy after a while, uncomfortably so, and as a result I wandered off in search of some, pardon the term, "reality." I found that in the Moorish Orthodox Church, where we didn't just talk about (or occasionally visit the churches of) Negroes, but were contantly reminded of the blackness and the American-ness of the founder, Timothy (Noble) Drew (Ali), who actually had more in common with Alexander Stone and the Campbell brothers than did my home congregation. I also mentioned that DCCC congregations, like the UCC, tend to develop distinct personalities. The personality of mine grew a little phony. Later on I revisited it for about a decade, and it had by then fallen into the hands of older, overly-conservative, wealthy white folks. This didn't stand up well for me either. Back to the Temple.

I'm glad your experience has been more consistent. Then again, over the course of my 59 years of off-and-on involvement with the DCCC I was probably bound to see evolutions and devolutions. It's a little disturbing to me that my particular church went from an all-embracing one to a looney burlesque of faux liberalism, all the way back to a rest home for the Rich, White and Republican. Weird. That's all.

And you're pretty much on the money with that "Jesus was a lefty" thing. I think probably he wouldn't choose to be put in a box like that, but he sure as hell wasn't Rich, White and Republican. I don't think anyone could argue with that.

  • @ John Mead

Your screed illustrates how the Democrats can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in November.

I know that you must look down your nose at the voters that don't believe in your obvious truths--but like it or not, they elect the President. So perhaps they don't want to be characterized as racist accessories to crime and murder. It's just a thought.

  • Obama for President

I know that most people have folks in their lives from different times in their earthly evolution that they no longer associate with and that includes Pastors!

I once went to a Pentecostal Church. I now feel the Minister there was not exactly all together sane- he too in the name of God said many things that were absolutely not real!

In this age we have strong proponents of YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!

I am quite sure some people have been harmed by that rhetoric!

What I see in Barack Obama is a man who has ideals, a faith in God ( however that is individually defined ) A person of intelligence and fervor for making some changes in America that would make sense! He will not be a War Lord! Thank goodness-

The Catholic Inquistion at one time killed hundreds of thousands of women- yet many people in the world are Catholic which to this day is a Patriarchal secret system!

A vast portion of this world- this ball hanging out in space and more and more in peril- is of the masculine orientation- women are not free-

In Barack Obama's historical heritage dark skinned people were not free and many are still treated vastly different than their white counterparts- sometimes the world at large watches America aghast! Are we all not seen on some level-!

Young people are blowing themselves up daily in other parts of the world believing they will be granted immense favor after death-

Let us remember that unless he is given adequate time to speak and that he be allowed to address this issue that is befronting him- all the rest is assumption!

Did Senator Clinton not have to live through her husband's affairs all of which were magnified in the scrutiny of the press- was she held responsible for the actions of her spouse!?

Some could surmise she has very poor self esteem to have stayed with a man who was perported to have had several affairs in their marriage- should we now question how she would make decisions based on her staying with the then President? Does she have low self esteem that would filter into her decison making ability?

Let us allow Senator Obama to speak for himself-

    in the peace, misty

  • Why is Salon about 5 days behind teh rest of the world

This news broke late last week. I was on vacation in the Cariebbean and this was all over the news. Funny how Salon didn't deem this newsworthy until now.

  • Wow

only took 21 pages to get the "Catholic Inquistion" analogy...So I agree...If Pastor Wright lived hundreds of years ago when the earth was still flat his comments would be valid. To funny!!!!

  • Odd...

I can't quite figure out the writer's viewpoint, other than that saying crazy hateful things is bad and no one should countenance it. Is there someone -- anyone -- who disagrees?

To me, this contretemps is a prime example of the right's ongoing battle to define politics on their terms. I think even the most virulent anti-Obamaites don't think he subscribes to these ideas any more than the HRC-Haters think she agrees with poor old Geraldine Ferraro.

These stories are out there because the right wants them out there. Now in this case it may be that the democratic wanna-be's did all the heavy lifting in terms of ferreting out and promoting this story. But it resonates with the media because of years of the right's constant heckling and vitriol. Never mind that McCain stands for some of the least popular ideas, what's important is whether or not the Democrats are in fact as pure as the driven snow!

This fall, our nation will select a leader for what are all-but - certain to be tempestuous times. And we will do so not on the basis of their ideas or their values or our impression of them as human beings. We will do so because a small sliver of poorly informed and barely-caring voters have fallen for some piece of unforeseen-and-unforeseeable propoganda from the press.

I'm hoping this time will be different, but then again I hope that Lucy will one day hold the ball for Charlie Brown to kick.
