Good, now let's see you do Hillary...
Thank you, Mr McClelland, for bringing this indept article about a very disturbing figure in Barack Obama's past. Yes, it should be looked at closely and scrutinized because, after all, this may well be our next President and it is important to know who his associates are.
I look forward to your article next week when you will publish, in the intereste of fairness, another column detailing Hillary's "crazy uncle".
I will await with baited breath to see who you will pick: Mark Rich? Webster Hubbell? James Riady?
Wait! How about Norman Hsu? I mean, who could possibly be crazier than him, right?
Well, whoever it is, I'm sure you'll do an equally superb investigative piece of journalism!
I'll be sure to hold my breath!

I'm glad you "bothered" to right your letter. You make an important point. I suppose I could be defined as leftist, and I agree with you that the American left (myself included) can come off as self-righteous and shrill.
Often there can be a tinge of arrogance and a wish to prove myself better than others because I can be "outraged" at the problems they cannot see.
My feeling is that there may be a hint of this psychology on the left. I would add that the Democratic party has its own version of this.
If we are to correct it, we, of course, need to give up on the idea of "being right" and instead listen to people. There is a great deal of common ground to be found in populism.
I suppose part of the attraction the moderate Obama holds (even though he voted for torte reform and, like Clinton, will keep an America presence -- probably permanant -- in Iraq) rests in his style of communication, which does at least seem to less negative.
All the best,
Laura

I can't help but correct my rather stunning typo:
I'm glad you chose to "write" your letter. What you said was "right."

Rubick Cube is Correct
Let's hear all about Hillary Clinton's dishonest deeds the last time she lived in the White House.
REMEMBER FILEGATE, WHITE WATER, TRAVELGATE, HIRING PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS TO DISCREDIT THE WOMEN BILL CLINTON ABUSED AND IN THE CASE OF JUANITA BRODDERICK RAPED, PAYING OFF THE MACDOUGLS,STEALING VINCE FOSTER'S PAPERS ALONG WITH MAGGIE WILLIAMS BEFORE SHE LET THE POLICE INTO HIS OFFICE. TELLING SEN BILL BRADLEY THAT IF HE DIDN'T SUPPORT HER HEALTHCARE PROPOSAL HE WOULD BE....... DEMONIZED........AND ON AND ON AND ON
THE VOTING PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE REMINDED OF ALL HER MISDEEDS.....SHE DOESN'T BELONG IN THE WHITE HOUSE........

So you people are righteously indignant about these remarks?
I find it ridiculous that no one is willing to make a stand on this. So I will.
Rev. Wright was absolutely correct. He engaged in a bit of hyperbole here and there, but he was correct in everything he said nonetheless.
Have any of you ever lived in the inner city? Ever been unable to get to sleep because of all the car alarms? Ever had a neighbor's garage set afire because of a drug deal gone bad, and worried that it would set your own house aflame? No? Then shut yer traps.
You don't know about poverty until you've lived it. There are millions of people in this country, a disproportionate number of whom are black, who barely manage to survive in America. Many are on food stamps. Some have to put their electric bills into their kids' names to keep the lights on. Their kids grow up seeing that criminals are the most successful people, and so their role models tend to be gang members. No one they know has gone to college, and many haven't even graduated from high school. In fact, the very idea of going to college seems absurd to these people, who can ill afford to pay for an education even at a community college. (Remember, college has two costs: 1. Money, and 2. Time. Even if they can get financial aid, they can't afford to spend most of their work week on schoolwork.)
So what do you get? You get slums. You get drug dealers selling on street corners, and kids aspiring to join their ranks. You get housing projects filled with crackheads (and crack whores). The people who have jobs are making, at best, little more than minimum wage, and they're struggling to keep their kids fed and clothed while they pay the rent. Meanwhile, those kids are getting some of the worst public education in America, and the prospects for their future are dim at best.
So you people have gotten all indignant because a man who has worked for decades trying to improve these horrendous conditions says "God damn America"? You try spending your life working to help these people, people for whom there is no way out of the tragic lives they live every day, and see if you don't feel anger at the rich and yes, white, people who control all the money that could make their lives better.
This post is getting long already, so I'll just quickly point out that one of Osama bin Laden's main motivations in attacking us on 9/11 was the presence of our military bases in Saudi Arabia. We chose to put those there. (And think how you'd feel if, say, Great Britain had military bases all over America.) Rev. Wright calls that "America's chickens coming home to roost." Can you honestly disagree with that? 9/11 was a violent response to our insistence that we have the right to meddle in international affairs for our own gain, something no one can deny that we've done.
So before you get so eager to denounce a man who's given his life to assisting those in need for the anger he's developed over the course of that service, consider the situation. Barack Obama joined the TUCC because he saw and respected the myriad good works it did. How many times have YOU people bothered to help the less fortunate?
