A powerful voice is a "god-given sound," says opera's Lotfi Mansouri. Obama's baritone seems to have that magic. Clinton's higher-pitched voice, not so much.

  • You would think we would factor this out when we make important decisions

But we do not. I saw the world's tallest woman on TV, and she has a deep baritone voice, because she is large. Truly unsettling voice, even when you grant her size. Can't get used to it. So, Hillary can't win, even if she lowers her voice. We just would believe that she sounded like a freak.

So, Hillary, go ahead and shout it out. Hope that people will listen to the message, rather than just the voice. But be sure your message is good.

  • Oh, I get it!

Those darn vocal chords. So THAT'S why women aren't good enough to have powerful offices. (Everywhere except America, that is)

  • Makes sense

    Americans are shallow AND desperate.

  • "cackle" from the gut

People call Hillary "shrill" and her laugh a "cackle" (even though "belly laugh" would be a more accurate term) because *they* *don't* *like* *her.*

  • It's Not the Voice, It's the Message

This is a fascinating question and one well worth asking, but we should be sure not to let an affirmative answer diminish Senator Obama's accomplishment. Don't forget that Obama began this campaign with everything stacked against him. If he ultimately wins the nomination it will not be because of some "god-given" (or, as some Clinton supporters assert, "unfair") advantage. Certainly, many factors have combined to influence his success, most of them the result of hard work, good decision-making, and the unwavering support of millions. Baritone voice or not, Senator Obama has run against an "inevitable" candidate and is on the verge of winning.

  • Well, She could lower her voice.

A few bourbons and half a pack of cigarettes every evening would help.

  • Ugly Rumors

I'm tired of these ugly rumors about Barack Obama. There is NO evidence he ever played the baritone. In "Dreams From My Father," he mentions that he once "trumpeted" something about disenfranchised people, but that's it. And he did once call Strom Thurmond a bassoon--or was that a buffoon? Whatever.

Obama may have a set of brass ones, but he never had a baritone!

  • Nothing new

Despite what some might think, folks in the States really are this shallow. Doesn't take anything away from Sen. Obama, it is just the way it is. Just like relative attractiveness of 'mature' men vs. 'mature' women (think 50 years old). Perhaps someday we will get past this, but I doubt it.

  • Get A Life

OK -- Obama's baritone and a whole lot of kool-aid is what is getting him the votes -- that's great America -- sit back drink a beer (there is one named after Obama) and smoke a doobie -- it's all good.

Let's see, I am voting for: the thick ankled lady with the shrill voice; a woman labeled C.U.N.T. by an organization online, and a daughter who McCain said was ugly. You know her? She's the one that they made a nutcracker doll out of with spikes between her thighs. No No -- not the dude that someone made a chocolate jesus of -- with the voice from God...I want the one with that grey matter in her head -- I think it's called brains.

I cringe when I hear Obama's voice. I can't stand empty preaching. I also hate kool-aid and beer named after humans. I don't join cults and I love leaders (the non-cult kind), not feel-good types who need to be told what to do and worshiped at the same time. Guess I just don't fit the mold...me and half of the democrats in this country.

    Hillary 08

  • Lincoln

By all accounts, Lincoln did not have a baritone but was much higher in pitch. Yet he was considered a great orator. I think there is a lot more going on than just pitch. Yes it probably helps, but Obama couldn't ride vacuousness to success with just a voice.

  • An indecent reality

Thanks for the flavor of a scientific analysis of THE apparent truth that men rule the world. In spite of her just about similar policies and better experience Hillary has been naturally incapacitated by virtue of her own gender, since the beginning of the race. I believe, in addition to Obama’s so called magical male voice his height also played a significant role to portray him as more authoritative. So it’s not only words matter, the image matters too. For a first glance, it is not the content of a product but its packaging is more influential to human mind. Living in a corporate influenced society and being besieged by the everyday commercials we easily understand that reality. Obama’s success is the vivid example of that reality. I wish, with the same intelligence, intellect and sharpness of the mind Senator Clinton had the sexy elegance of Catherine Zeta Jones. It would have been a different story altogether. However, one thing makes me curious though; how did Margaret Thatcher succeed in this male chauvinistic world. God knows.

  • No.....

It is his not voting to give Bush the power to invade Iraq, that gives him an edge.

  • Not really

It was easier for him not to give authorization for the war, as Obama was not in the Senate at that time and had nothing to risk politically. It could have been a stroke of luck; however I will give him the credit but not that extent to substantiate his decision as outstanding as he claims.

  • On the eve of this new day

Let's all give a hip-hip... HOORAY for no anon postings in the first Obama article to disallow them!

No BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA troll, no Republican conspiracy crossover vote troll, no "I'm-voting-for-McCain-if-Obama-wins" troll. Did I leave any out?

  • Content

    1) It’s the baritone voice

    2) It’s because he’s black

    3) It’s because the press gave him a free ride

    4) It’s because the people who follow him are blind and stupid

    5) It’s because he’s new

    6) It’s because people hate women

Ladies and gentlemen do we have any more brilliant analysis?

Maybe it’s because he is by far in all respects the better candidate?

  • Mating call huh?

Well that explains why lately I have been thinking of him as a sort of pick-up artist.

    One puzzle solved.

Next puzzle: Why do Clinton and Obama look like Lucy and Desi in the compositor's pictures?

  • scary stereotype

Hillary needed a drama director and speech coach. She has tried, I know, pitching her voice lower, speaking a little breathy, the pale lipstick, the wan foundation, just a little misty.

But when she gets frustrated, the schoolmarm takes over: "Shame on you, Barack Obama!" And when she's in more control, she's Madame chairman or Club lady. She actually does look down her nose, shuts her eyes, opens them, raises her eyebrow and archly delivers some cold bit from her CV.

The suits are all wrong, the severe brow line, the cheek implants, the over groomed hair--when will she understand that in public speaking at this level, in t.v. land, style always trumps substance. It's not WHAT you say Hillary, it's HOW.

Breathe from the diaphragm. Open the mouth. Tousle the hair a bit. Or wear your spectacles and take that law professor look all the way out,

    Wear a long scarf.
