Progressives who want to disarm U.S. militarism must first understand the nation's faith in the military -- one of our least elitist, most diverse institutions.
  • No Group Is Held In More Disdain and Contempt Than Our Enlisted Personnel.

I cannot believe Mr. Astore was serious when he wrote this nonsense. I spent a good part of my life as an enlister person and I can guarantee no other group experiences the disdain and contempt from the general public as do they. I believe one of the main reasons for this is our forces a disproportionatey staffed by the nation's economic under-class. Chris Matthews has made many appearances at our major colleges and when he often asked the audience after hearing some of the most gung ho, jingoistic often up his show with asking how many were willing to join up. Usually none raised a hand. We would soon see this war come go a finish if a functioning draft was passed into law. This is proven by the strange fact that those most in favor of it oppose reinstating military conscription. They now the result would be a repeat of what we experienced in the 60s. Am I the only person to remember there was very little opposition to the war in Vietnam until LBJ toyed with the idea of drafting those hiding in college. Are there any recruiting offices in our most affluent cities?
