Letters to the Editor

On Super Tuesday, for the first time in my life, I will walk into the voting booth without knowing who to vote for. I blame John Edwards.

  • The writing.

Ignoring the chiding, wheedling and cajoling that I know MUST comprise the majority of the 580 letters of this thread (as people think of it not just as a way to convince one writer of who she should choose, but EVERY undecided voter who happens to read their letter) I have something to say.

The first time that I read anything of Rebecca Traister's it was some male-bashing in Broadsheet - the one place you'll find sexist ranting in Salon on a daily basis, aside from in the 'letters' of any given article. I read it, her name stuck (it's rather close to my last name, so it wasn't challenging) and for a long time, I just avoided anything with her byline.

    MY LOSS.

In the past few months, I guess that first article slipped my mind and I found myself reading and thoroughly enjoying her articles. As long as men whose opinions diverge from hers aren't the topic of the day, I have to say that I firmly believe she's one of the finest, most entertaining, and in her way, one of the more incisive writers that Salon has.

    Keep up the excellent work.

  • Rebecca, you nailed it

Didn't think you could top the terrific piece you wrote about the media's premature burial of Hillary in New Hampshire - but you did. Once again, you've managed to capture EXACTLY what I'm feeling now. Everything, from the bewilderment at being still undecided to the secret guilt I'd feel as a woman in voting against my mother's wishes (she, of course, is an ardent Hillary supporter), to the battle between my sense of Obama's extraordinary charisma and my equally strong sense of Hillary's formidable competence (which would be such a welcome relief after the last 8 years), to my profound fear of a Hillary nomination unleashing what someone else has very wittily called "Clinton Derangement Syndrome," to my forlornly wondering "why couldn't Edwards have stayed another week?"

And I sense that you, like me, want in your heart of hearts to vote for Hillary.

And I can't tell you to do it - because I'm not at all sure I can do it myself.

    Good luck tomorrow!

  • Men have been doing it for the last 231 years and have not gotten it right!

A man is a man no matter what his skin color is, a woman is the only thing that will bring real compassion and change!

  • Hillary's HealthCare Plan Is NOT MANDATED, DESPITE WHAT OBAMA CAMP SAYS!

With Obama's healthcare plan, he is ASSUMING that the cost of insurance will drop to an affordable enough rate, therefore we all should be able to afford it. Then he says, if you do not have insurance once it has gone to an affordable price, and you show up in the emergency room, you will be charged a premium or penalty.

That is a Republican method of healthcare. They say you get free healthcare by showing up at the county ER, which is true, but that is passed on to the property taxes. We all know how outrageous those taxes are!

So we are going to have the same problem with Obama's healthcare plan, except the poor people and middle class who cannot afford insurance, will be forced to pay for it either way. That is going to cause a huge problem, not solve the ones already in place.

With Hillary's universal healthcare plan, we all as Americans participate in paying for it which

    A) Insures that the cost of insurance premiums go down because it will be all Americans insured. More volume=less cost!

    B) She is also placing a cap on premiums

    C) If you are not satisfied with those choices, then she is also opening up the same insurance offered to Congress! If you are satisfied with your current insurance, if you are blessed enough to have it, then you can keep it! The only difference is it will be cheaper because of the increase in the volume of co-pays for ALL Americans to be covered.

    D) If you cannot afford the premiums, then she will provide a tax subsidy which is what is offered to the poor at this time anyway, except they are not insured.

She does NOT promote penalizing or fining those who do not or cannot get insurance. There will be no need to because ALL AMERICANS WILL BE INSURED! Not like Obama's plan that leaves it up to the Americans to fight it out with the insurance companies, get nowhere, and then be penalized because you have to show up at the ER anyway.

Think about it people! If you have ever dealt with illness, this is VERY IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT VERY SERIOUSLY!

Right now the property owners and the ones who do have health insurance are the ones paying for all of the ones who do not have insurance, so those costs will be reduced for those that are currently carrying the burden.

  • how about voting...

...for the candidate who will most likely be able to win in November?

Hillary unites the Republicans, even in their most fractured state, against her.

Hillary has no draw on moderate Republicans and Independents - all of whom John McCain and Obama do.

Hell, she doesn't even unite the Democrats as a result of her recent campaign strategies.

There is ample proof for both of those above statements. I'm just too tired at 12:45am to give you all the links to the plethora of articles and poll results that substantiate the statements.

It doesn't matter how hard she can fight. She can't win over people who fundamentally refuse to vote for her. It's simple math.

Republicans + Independents > (voting) Democrats.

More to the point, would it really be so bad to vote for a - gasp - black *man* who inspires young people and moderate Republicans and Independents *and* Democrats to *hope*? Isn't that the job of a national figurehead? And to boot - he's a pretty excellent "manager" if this campaign is any proof.

But if that isn't enough to sway your heart, then I say: vote with your brain.

Let's not have a repeat of the '04 and '00 elections. Please.

  • TO ANNONYMOUS THAT REPEATS HILLARY VOTED FOR THE WAR...

Kerry Stands by His Iraq War Vote

And Stands, With Bush, Against Constitutional Principles

    By MICHAEL C. DORF

    ----

    Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004

Responding to a challenge from President Bush, last week Senator Kerry stated that even if he had known then what he knows now, he still would have voted to authorize the use of force against Iraq in October 2002.
