Why Did I Read This?
And why did she write this non-opinion? And why did Salon publish it? How did this "editorial," not taking any sides or discussing much of anything enter the world of ideas?

Good point Uju
Same could be said why they didn't support Shirley Chisholm either.
As a black woman I find these things vert troubling.

The Real Issues
Rebecca, please take time to evaluate the histories, writings and policies of the candidates and the ability of each to win a general election (based on the polling of republicans, independents and democrats) versus John McCain. The best candidate choice for you will then reveal itself. To spend your time obsessing about 'gender' and 'race' is nothing but a waste of your time.
-
@Art Tree in Town - Deserves a star for certain.
That being said, I don't think Obama has been thoroughly vetted for the position. Camelot is a self-comforting fantasy or outright delusion for liberals, who may waver if Obama turns out to be just another politician claiming to be something else. I don't know if there are skeletons in his closet, although he did come up through Chicago politics for Chrisakes. But that's the point: Hillary has been thoroughly vetted, for good or ill. She's not going to blow up when the campaign against the Repub candidate gets going. At stake in this election. lest anyone forget, is getting out of Iraq or continuing the discredited Bush policy of "victory" favored by McCain and Romney.
Hillary may indeed cause angry white guys to get out of their parents' basements to vote against her. But there are lots of angry women, minorities, working people and others who've been paying attention the last 7 years who can vote to tell McCain/Romney/Bush to fuck off. For pragmatic reasons, I bet on Hillary to accomplish this, even though Obama might prove to be up to the task, should he turn out to be the candidate. I just think the stakes are too high to take that chance at this point. Obama can do good work from here on and run again. I'd vote for him someday if he turns out to have even a passing resemblance to Lancelot.
If this isn't editorial star material than I don't know WHAT is.

It's not that hard
Rebecca,
I'm a Jew. I would never vote for Lieberman. OK?
-
Voting your Gut and Heart is Moronic
Vote with your gut, your heart, and your mind -- and don't let anyone make you feel guilty either way, and don't tell a soul if you don't want to.
GROW UP. This is politics not a religion. Its' hard and dirty and a dogfight. And this is not a parlimentary system so you vote for the best GOP or Dem to defeat the other sob, depending what side your on.
Anything less is serving as a spoiler.

In other words....
Hillary Clinton is the safe choice.
Just like John Kerry.

what hope does anyone see in a massive police state?
I do not understand this willful ignorance on the part of most of the posters here.
Y'all are drugged up or something, pretending not to notice how the pieces of the police state are being put together in this very nation, the one that USED to believe in something quaintly called 'freedom'.
It is like that Nazi Germany thing about ignoring that your neighbor is being compromised by the government because it is not happening to YOU yet.
You think your Hillary or Obama will change this nation's course? They will gladly take the reigns of imperial powerr and continue to drive this evil Beast of a nation.
Which makes you people COMPLICIT in the creation and expansion of this Beast, if you vote for either Hillary OR Obama.
I will not let you dingbats forget this either.
Vote Ron Paul if you do not despise this nation, or else explain yourselves and your continuing ignorance.
-
Kerry endorsed Obama, Bonzo.
Hillary Clinton is the safe choice.
Just like John Kerry.
Kerry endorsed Obama, moron. Something that I'm sure will help him in those electoral votes across red state America right along with the Kennedy and Naral endorsements.

exactly
I feel exactly the same way. I have never, ever, felt undecided before, and I looked at "undecideds" with amazement. Now I wonder, Clinton or Obama?
I agree that Clinton knows her stuff and can do the job. She understands the complexity of running this country, and is tough enough to handle the worst the office can dish out. When I catch myself worrying that she'll bring out the worst of the far right, I remind myself that this is exactly what they want us to feel. So I have to say - I refuse to be bullied. I refuse to change my vote simply because *they* don't like her.
Yet, I am also caught up in the Obama excitement. His speeches give me goosebumps. For the first time in years, I feel hope that maybe we can escape this ugly, hateful place that we've gone - where winning is more important that being honest, or logical, or right. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world.
I, too, will go into the booth tomorrow and let the spirit move me.

@Emily
People in this country HATE her in a way they do not hate Barack Obama.
You must be smoking something really good today - like birdseed.
Right - I'm sure with Kennedy and Naral endorsing him, all the people who you claim "hate" Hillary will just rush out to flock to the Obama banner.
And actually if you haven't noticed (and I'm sure you indeed haven't) Hillary has been faring very well with blue collar America and older Americans whom we'd lost under the liberal sort of candidate you insist we commit suicide with.

The Republicans are going to demonize and smear ANY Democrat. They did it to the Clintons, to Gore and to Kerry, Maple-Powered Howard and are salivating to do it to Obama once they've got Hillary (who knows how to fight back) out of the way.
Anyone who thinks Obama is going to get this free pass he's been given with all his baggage (nuclear bill, Rezzo, wife's salary increases, fancy home with Rezzo's help, no-show for votes in the Senate in outrageous percentages, not to mention the endorsements of the most hated liberal dinosaurs and "babykilers" like NARAL) and is going to beat McCain is just deluding themselves.
He will lose in a landslide to McCain. Hard reality, but one folks better realize FAST if they don't want another McGovern landslide defeat.
