The Emperor has no clothes -- and neither does anyone else
Robert Reich should have been installed as permanent-lifetime Chairman of the Fed a long, long time ago! I suspect his politics are decidedly liberal; but his economics are real, and I doubt that he would have helped take down the economy by permitting madness for ever so long. Watching Alan Greenspan hawk his book on Charlie Rose's recent show was something of an epiphany: here was this very, very old man, supposedly steeped in the deepest understanding of economics, who simply could not understand how the "markets had been distorted", or corporations had gained such a stranglehold on the Congress -- and had no idea that, just maybe, blatant greed had caused much of the system to be sold off to various bidders. To live through Bush's economics, or DeLay's auctions trading assets (ours) for power, should have given him a clue to understand immediately what had happened. Gordon Gecko didn't make his reading list, apparently. When the economy is sick, feces float and the rest of us sink.

SO WHOSE FAULT IS THIS NICE FINE MESS THEY'VE GOTTEN US INTO, STANLEY?
So WHOSE FAULT is this NICE FINE MESS they've gotten us into, Stanley? WHY, George Walker Bush, Alan Greenspan, both republican and some democratic members of congress, Ronald Reagan, Reaganesque economics, Milton Friedman and "slippery slope sloppy supply-side economics"!!!!! All of these CRIMINALS, not to mention previous Treasury Secretary John W. Snow and current Secretary Henry Paulson as well as current Federal Reserve Chair Ben S. Bernanke, are CULPABLE for the current CRISIS facing America, which will make the Great Depression of the 1930s look like an outing in the park!!!!! Add to this the UNDERHANDED CHICANERY of CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS like Chase Manhattan, Bank of America, Citigroup that MASQUERADE as reputable financial organizations but are in fact PERNICIOUS PARASITE VAMPIRES who suck the lifeblood of America's economy like LAMPREYS, HAGFISH, TICKS, MITES, FLIES, MIDGES, MOSQUITOES, LEECHES and VAMPIRE BATS, TAKING from the hardworking people of America and GIVING NOTHING BACK in return! THEY MUST BE STOPPED and LIQUIDATED, EXTERMINATED for the good of America!!!!!

Reich's Knowledge
I have always respected Mr. Reich's economic insight. But I am curious why Mr. Reich didn't add corporate debt to the mix of his analysis? Why hasn't any credible economists or finance pundits uncovered or even addressed the massive debt that corporations have incurred over the last few years? Why have corporate CEO's been allowed to earn 250% more than a line employee while company profits decline.
Investors like Zell who justed completed purchasing the Tribune without using any of his own money or assets and other corporate raiders have weakened our economy more than people who received sub-prime loans. Hedge-fund masters and corporate raiders alike have been and are interested in only one thing - exorbitant profits even at the expense of having the business tank after all profits have been surgically removed. What happended to the days when a corporation's health was based on current assets and future profit projectons? To be sure, the money people who engineered to easy credit schemes in the sub-prime arena are the same people behind the tough credit scheme that is breaking the economic back of this country.
Lenders who made sub-prime loans could do a lot to rescue the people that are in economic hot water. They have the power to not only delay resetting interest rates but they can also defer payments to assist their borrowers. But lenders are more interested in the foreclosed homes and the future profits they'll receive when the market rebounds because real estate will rebound because we have a growing population that needs housing.
Like the issue of corporate welfare versus the poor the need welfare to live, no one seems to care about the massive coporate subprime loans that is surely fueling this recession. And does anyone care? Of course not! It's just "business" as usual.

Here's a non-econ 410-420 solution to the Depression problem:
Impeach Bush & Cheney.
Quixotic perhaps. Maybe silly--but it pops into mind after reading Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" (can an Econ Nobel be rescinded for Friedman posthumously?--more "econ-terrorist" than economist, seems like. Unless Klein's nuts, of course).
And then David Cay Johnston's "Free Lunch"--gadzooks, he makes Charlie Rose's sycophancy to the Scrooge of Kansas City trigger the gag reflex.
Makes Kucinich seem positively prescient about keeping Cleveland's mitts on it's own power generation plant way back when.
But then, perhaps folks don't mind being ripped off and having those enriched thereby get to make their own "charitable decisions". I'd prefer to make my own, had I my druthers.

Open Letter to Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid
Dear Nan...(and Harry, but the House has Constitutional dibs on initiating the process)
The best chance you have to give the world and US economy an immediate, restorative and stabilizing burst of confidence is to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against George Bush and Dick Cheney and remove them from office.
If you feel that you have a conflict of interest because by leading the joint impeachments you will be next in line to assume the presidency of this nation, then resign your position as Speaker of the House.
If, on the other hand, you haven't the stomach to honor the oath you made upon taking office because impeachment seems "too adversarial," then I respectfully suggest you resign your seat in our House of Representatives.
(As a reality check on your alleged sensitivity to "adversarialness," you certainly don't seem to find the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan "too adversarial," or can't you tell the difference between killing and a legal procedure? If not, you probably should resign from the House, anyway. Same advice to you, Harry.)
Regardless of your personal decisions in these matters, the impeachments must be initiated and taken to completion.
These are the benefits that I predict will immediately inure to our nation and the world: etc.
