Gosh, I thought all the neo-con trolls were working over at Huffingtonpost.com. The depth of delusion is indeed staggering with these people.

@ktwdawg Ledeen + Lantos / Naomi Klein = right on track
Juan Cole missed the mark; you nailed it, ktwdawg: this chaos is not an accident, not incompetence; it is the most exquisite degree of evil in motion.
A major clue was Tom Lantos's insistence that raising the matter of the Armenian genocide RIGHT NOW, would "certainly not upset his good Turkish friends; they understand....."
Rubbish. Lantos knew exactly what he was doing, and what he was doing is the Likud shuffle: shuffling the boundaries of the Middle East, that is. Mossad has been training Kurds for years; Israel and the US have been investing in Kirkuk for at least a year; Doug Feith's agenda in cooking the intelligence revolved around a pipeline deal he and his Jerusalem-based partner, Mark Zell, hatched with Ahmed Chalabi to pipe oil from Kirkuk to Haifa.
Israel & US have been using the Kurds to harry Iran. In a C-Span stint last week Flynt Leverett explained that Iran would deal with the US if US made security commitments: don't mess with Iran's borders, don't mess with Iran's internal affairs. US and Israel is doing both, today: Josh Muravchik & Kenneth Timmerman run a 501c-3 aimed at creating social instability inside Iran. Leverett said that the US & Israel are inciting ethnic minorities in Iran --Baluchis, etc-- to rise against Iran, claim independence, thereby change Iran's borders.
Why are US & Israel doing this?
Frederick Kagan answered the question on Sept 13, 2007, Heritage Foundation: Iran seeks hegemony over Middle East.
I don't think that's true: I think Iran seeks respect and influence proportionate to its size, strength, resources, and talent in Middle East.
Israel, on the other hand, seeks hegemony to match its psychotic, utopian vision, wildly disproportionate to the resources & 'reality-based'demographic talents and dynamism it has to contribute to the middle east or the rest of the world.

hamburger, you are correct.
I did go back and check the end of Mr. Cole's article, and he does say that he is a U of M History Professor. No hidden intent here: I would apologize for missing such a significant distinction in profession.
The rest of my intent in writing I would comfortably stand on, tho. The article is nothing but redundant, thoughtless, Bush bashing, and I find that to be a poor excuse for supposed thinking. Lest you get too traumatized: I live in Michigan, the state is broke, we just raised taxes, and the general concensus of residents in my area is that the very expensive UofM academics live blissfully unaware of the real world. Mr. Cole certainly reinforces that image.
Now, paulpsd7:
Gee, I guess I did tramatize you... Take it easy, this is just a written debate. And, go back and read my article... specifically:
"We do not control the Middle East".
I would not propose to tell the Middle Eastern countries in question how to live their lives; But I would propose to take seriously any threat they may pose to my country, hence the Iraq invasion, and the Afganistan Taliban effort. This is called, "self defense". For Iraq, it is also called, "very poor Intelligence".
That the Middle East countries are not perfect is not America's fault or problem - it is their's. Opium in Afganistan? Better situation than the Taliban harboring Al Quaida in Afganistan (neither one good, of course).
Pakistan on our side? Sure it is; Look at what they do with their military and diplomatic efforts - that is what counts and that is all that we can hope to influence. I wish all the young people in Pakistan wanted to wear western jeans and watch Hollywood movies, but what they actually do, and the consequences thereof, is fully in their hands. Incidentally, the Paki coworkers that I have do not echo your relatives; big country I guess.
And, lastly, paulpsd7... the 'adult mind' thing... heh heh heh, yea, afraid so. I don't mean to take unfair advantage of you, but your youthfullness is very evident. I came of age back in the mid 60's. The cold War (global), the hot war (Vietnam), the Ugly American... The Historybuff urge allowed me to take it all in. I hate to burst your bubble, but compared to Vietnam, Iraq is a blistering success. The WTC attack could certainly happen again, just as the embassys/WTC/ship bombings happened in the 90's. That they have not done so is due to the competance of the Bush Administration in general Foreign Diplomacy and homeland defense - after all, the results describe the efforts.

I take this as evidence that you're completely unglued.
However, perhaps you don't see yourself as unglued. Maybe you think the above comment is perfectly rational, rooted in fact. If so, I'm happy to give you the benefit of the doubt.
Please explain how, were it not for Bush's policies, Israel, NYC and Omaha would be in smoldering ruins. What I'm looking for here is a step-by-step method which would result in that outcome. Extra points if your answer can avoid any outrageous fantasies, such as the notion that Al Qaeda has a nuclear arsenal (for example).
I await your reply with bated breath.
