Bush: Threat of World War III if Iran goes nuclear

    http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSN1732974320071017

We lived for decades with a nuclear-armed (to the teeth) Soviet Union. Now, somehow, if Iran has a nuke (something of which there is no proof whatsoever!), it's WWIII time!

The military-industrial complex and their government sock puppets are going to start a war that will make Iraq look like a Sunday School picnic. The mass media is preparing the way with this kind of hysterical garbage.

    Terror! Nukes! Muslims! Terror!

This will have the dual effect of pumping up the profits of those who make war and giving the criminals who run this country a very convenient scapegoat for the crashing of the U.S. economy -- which, together, are going to be their further rationale for even more curtailing of civil liberties and fascist government control.

The demise of all that we hold dear as Americans is happening in front of our eyes, folks.

  • The Iran Hawks

How many "Potential Threats" are the politicians going to protect the USA from? How about the really big one, running out of money? The USA or Ronney Reagan if you prefer, defeated the USSR by outspending them. Given the amount of money the middle east is extracting from the USA for oil and the falling value of the greenback, who is going to pay for these future wars? Will common sense prevail and the "War on Drugs" and the "War on terror" going to be curtailed at a reasonable level?

If the country is all hot to trot, where are the patriotic volunteers lining up to be killed or maimed for "Old Glory"? It almost looks like the politicians of all colors are using the time honored tactic of focusing on the enemy without to distract the populaces attention from the problems within.

America cannot afford another war in the near future. It lacks the manpower and materials to fight a conventional war and given the current success of the "peace" in Iraq the generals will be hard pressed to recommend a tactical war. THe other optio is a strategic war with nukes. How likely are the Russians to stand by if such a route were selected?

  • I for one

Hope that when Iran gets the bomb they absolutely use it on us or our allies. 300 million dead Americans can't possibly be a bad thing.

  • "300 million dead Americans"

That’s all if (except for the illegals) That’s a big bomb

  • SCHIP

the State Childrens Health Care Program was started in the Clinton years, 1997 to be exact.

Some states have been using it to insure low income adults (parents) of the children enrolled, and states are trying to expand the income levels now to enroll more people, and there are many more to enroll now than six years ago, poverty rates have risen dramatically under Bush.

Bush just recently vetoed the expansions, and any Republican elected will certainly curtail this and similar programs. See your local conservative pundit for their opinion.

Ron Paul's position is way more extreme, he wants to do away with all Medicaid (SCHIP is a type of Medicaid) as well as Medicare and Social Security.

Clinton has worked hard for children and has supported expansion of SCHIP, as have other Democratic presidential candidates.

  • What's the point Juan?

That Hillary will try to act tough to become President? Maybe it would be a better idea for her to act weak so that we can have another 4-8 years of Republican rule. Honestly, what kind of fool do you have to be to get a gig writing articles about the middle east for Salon? (hint; be willing to blame Israel and AIPAC for everything under the sun)

Juan, perhaps you should take a few minutes and venture over to MEMRI.org to find out if you buddy Achmadinjad is really "misunderstood" when he calls for the annihilation of Israel. Maybe you could have one of our undergraduates do it for you. You might find that he has repeated his genocidal calls over and over.

After all, the Arab and Persian world has been calling for destruction of Israel since it was carved out of the ruins of the British and Ottoman empires. When the Arabs and the Persians relinquish their genocidal dreams, then there will be peace in the middle east. Most Israelis are ready to make a land for peace deal, but the other side has no interest in peace. The local dictators know that peace would cost them their jobs (and probably their lives).

  • Hawks, Doves and Dodo Birds

While the candidates rattle their vocal chords on Iran, Mr. ex-KGB Putin is renewing Russia’s warm and fuzzy relationship with that country. Once again, in the arena of diplomacy we Americans are worse than fools; we are amateurs. Most of the candidates and most Americans know nothing about Iran. All we have seen is Mr. Amadinejad, and we don’t know or understand him either. Why would we go to war with a country about which we are ignorant? Talk of yet another war is ludicrous.

In Condoleezza Rice, we have an Eastern European expert, the most culturally knowledgeable Russian speaking American Secretary of State in recent history. Where in the world is Condoleezza? Might she not have been useful to President Bush when he met with Putin at the waste-of-time G8 Conference earlier this year? Where was Condoleezza when Putin visited Bush at Kennebunkport this summer? Where was she when Nancy Pelosi went to Syria? Where is she now when she should be in Ankara, Turkey trying to mend that broken fence on the Kurdish border with Iran? Good fences make … Colin Powell was ruined by his undying loyalty. Why can’t Condoleezza see that?

In all fairness, the odds have been against Rice from the beginning. Not only doesn’t she see eye to eye with Vice President Dick Cheney, Deputy National Security Advisor Elliott Abrams and the other militant neocons refuse to sit down with any country they do not like or agree with. This unqualified failure in American diplomacy has all but isolated us from any credible multilateral support we might require should we blunder and stumble again into another war without end.

The Russians are experts at diplomacy, as are most Europeans. They could talk rings around us. In that sense Putin is doing what he should be doing. Naturally it is to Russia’s advantage to befriend Iran; but it might well prevent another needless war neither the Russians nor the American people can afford. If, under a new Administration the Dodo bird can be revived, just maybe American diplomacy can be reborn.

Years ago, I found in Iran a rich culture whose people were both charming and beautiful. The caviar is still a toss-up: Iranian or Russian?
